Summarized Biography:
Born on the Telos IV Citadel, Harrington Shepard was drafted into the Imperial military at 18, a few months after the Battle of Yavin. With the truth about Alderaan widely known by the time Shepard completed basic training with the Imperial Navy, he made the decision to defect fairly quickly. Assigned as a trainee shuttle mechanic aboard the Dreadnaught[i/] heavy cruiser [i]Imperial Destiny. When that ship was sent to suppress a civilian uprising on Comkin V, Shepard made arrangements to be aboard a personnel shuttle delivering a few like-minded technicians to the local garrison base. Tagging along under the guise of conducting an in-flight repair, Shepard and three technicians turned their tools on the other passengers and pilots, hijacking the shuttle and delivering it and a few prisoners into the hands of a small Alliance cell that had been set up to assist the civilians.

After joining up with the Alliance fleet, Shepard went through flight school and was commissioned as an officer. Fortune—or misfortune—kept him away from the more notable and dangerous battles of the war, but Shepard earned several commendations and awards, as well as a series of promotions. By the end of the Galactic Civil War, Shepard had made captain and made the decision to transfer to fleet operations. Content with shipboard command, he refused promotion to flag rank several times as vacancies opened up until 30 Galactic. At that time, he was confronted with an ultimatum: accept promotion to commodore, or retire as captain. Not yet ready to sit on the sidelines, with the Galactic Union just forming, Shepard grudgingly accepted the promotion. Five years later, he was made a rear admiral.

In the wake of the assassination of the bulk of the Republic High Command, Shepard had suddenly become one of the more seasoned naval officers in the New Republic Navy, and shared the consternation of many when a lowly commodore, Kira Daast, was elevated by the whim and decree of Ares Valure.
