You can't reduce it to a mathematical equation. Vader + Yoda + Han Solo = diluted sacrifice. It makes no sense to look at it like that. Han Solo was always a paper-thin character, he really only had his luck, for him to die for such a noble cause should have been his last hooray. In my opinion, of course. Him surviving detracted from Luke, who undeniably was the main character, succeeding. Good movies, like Pulp Fiction for example, have a lot of characters dying left and right to leave the focus on the main characters. Otherwise, it becomes a joke, like the Phantom Menace. Wouldn't you have felt better if Jar Jar sacrificed himself? :P

No. Jar Jar wasn't the worst part. >_>

I quote the ancient wise man... "Aww, how cute! He's accidentally flying the space ship... I hope he f**king dies!"

If I had my way Qui-Gon Jin would have been a wizened old master and Obi-Wan the treading Jedi defying the Council and pushing Anakin toward the dark-side. Han Solo dying at the end would have ultimately proved he was the normal man and that would have given his character closure. Then again, we're talking about Star Wars and severe wounds can be easily healed by a Bacta Tank.

Unless you're the poor sap wearing body armor. Then everything's a one-hit kill... while the pilot who gets shot in his underwear survives the exact same wound.

Bringing closure to a character arc doesn't necessarily mean death. And I am not looking at this like a mathematical equation. All I'm saying is the more characters you have die in a film, the less of an impact each consecutive death will have. And really, ROTJ is the light-hearted ending chapter of the trilogy. Death and destruction does not make a happy or satisfying conclusion. Lucas had the right idea with keeping all the main characters alive - or at least, the main heroes we care about.

And really...did you just compare Pulp Fiction to Star Wars? That's apples and oranges. Two different genres. They're not even close to the same type of story-telling we're talking about here.

Ok, then Dusk Till Dawn, same concepts, different environment and same fantasy genre. If you think about ROTJ it definitely ends with a lot of death and destruction, just not a whole lot of death on the Rebel side. Seems to me thats kind of a lop-sided sacrifice.

He was, like, nobody. They only added him (as a Sith and not a politician) so they could have the symbolism of Vader throwing him into the reactor (and thus he really should have stayed dead, even in the EU). Otherwise he could have ended up being a puppet of the moffs or something. It would have been nice if they managed it with Vader rising to power, so that when he turned at Endor it would pretty much end the war.

Or, in our case, poorly paid mercenaries distracted by planetary militia and Bloodreavers make excellent cannon fodder for the-devil-doesn't-care gray Jedi. :P
