Varonat

Varonat is a rural, colonized new republic planet... fairly unassuming if not for its major export of aleudrupe berries. regardless of its industry, the planet is sparsely populated between its two cities, Tropis-on-Varonat and Edgefields-on-Varonat. Its government holds a seat in the new republic senate and is well regarded in the central galactic political realm. The climate is hot and humid, and succumbs to frequent rain due to its rain-forest and mountainous terrain

Quote:

Tropis-On-Varonat

Wedged in the upper plateaus of Varonat's jungle terrain, Tropis-on-Varonat resembles the terrain and climate of rural Peru. Its population is a little under several thousand people and includes a small spaceport.

Tseneca had awakened feeling deflated, but she climbed out of the bunk and made her way to the bridge. Sethe and Jairon were speaking in low tones, Jairon stopped as soon as he saw her standing in the crossway, and Sethe turned to see what the interruption was. He frowned and turned back around, asking the Ishi Tibb about landing procedures.

"good timing, we're entering Varonat's atmosphere." Jairon said. "Are you feeling better?"

She shrugged. "More or less."

He moved to let her sit down before moving over to the console. Sethe left the cockpit without another word. She worried her lip. There was no talking to him and she didn't want to anyway.

Jairon looked over to her, nodding in Sethe's wake. "Trouble?"

"Always." She said. "Can I ask what you two were discussing before I crashed your party."

Now Jairon shrugged. "I told him that you'll most likely be heading back to Kuat with the Davad girl. He was discussing the likely options of his sticking around the Tessaret when we head back to couruscant, same deal as before, only... cheaper, I suppose. "

Tseneca felt her heart sink a little, but shook it off. Good riddence to bad rubbish. "We'll don't cheat yourself on the account of false advertising, you're still giving him a ride, the least he could do is pay the right price, even without me aboard."

he cocked his head as if assessing her, then said. "don't worry your pretty head about it, we'll work it out."

There was a hoot as Yorak spoke up. "Cap, Deria space port at Tropis-on-Varonat is sending us coordinates for landing. We're being counted as the refugee ships escort, so they say they'll be sending a party to greet us."

Jairon let out a small groan. "Well that's not entirely necessary..."

Yorak swiveled his eyestalks at him. "What did you expect? We arrive like this, they ain't gonna leave us alone."

"Fine, fine. Just land. I'll take care of it."

Tseneca piped up. "Actually, I'd better take care of it. My title holds enough clout that even a backwater planet like this can respect my position. You and your crew wont have to show, if its a problem. We're facing a hightly sensitive situation here, politically. "

Jairon looked almost relieved. "Just let them know we're your escort, you won't be on your own, and they wont take you as a lone diplomat."

She looked him over. "You would do that?"

His face was grim, but all he said was a simple. "yes."

It took a good amount of time to land, mostly because of how small the spaceport was. Cramming ten of cloud city's escape vessels into Tropis' tiny port was close to impossible without a little creativity. Many of the ships were forced to split up and land on the city outskirts. Regardless, once settled, the Tessaret landed without a problem.

Tseneca disembarked alone, as was the initial plan. Bella was standing outside her ship, and immediately approached as she exited the ship. The younger woman greeted her with a hug.

"You kids are everywhere these days." Tseneca said with a tightlipped smile. She felt her stomach clench as she remembered Lucas and kris with a grim jolt.

Bella must have felt her insecurity, because she looked Tseneca in the eyes. "We don't know anything yet, Tsen. If you got out, its more than possible they did as well."

Tseneca inhaled slightly at the endearment, and winced inwardly at the girls naive hope. Though she and her brothers were close, she couldn't possibly think they had survived that devastation. It would be folly to think otherwise. but she wouldn't say as much, not to Bella.

"Of course." She said softly, and the two started walking to the terminal.

"They aren't coming with you?" Bella shot a glance at the Tessaret.

She shook her head. "No. The last thing we need is a band of renegades facing a small government like Varonat's in order to debrief them on one of the biggest acts of terrorism we've faced since the civil war. Its best they stay behind, that way we can deal with this as diplomatically as possible."

Bella stopped and faced her. "Are you sure you're alright?"

No. she wasn't alright. It might be a long time until she was alright again, but they had things to do before she could feel safe enough to fall apart.

She nodded, then answered. "Lets just get this over with and then we can talk privately."

Bella nodded and they continued to the terminal where a sharpely dressed official stood, flanked by two armed guards.

The stood before the man. He was tall, and not bad looking with dark eyes and a goatee. He gazed down at them over his large hawkish nose, almost sneering, but not quite.

"My name is Langdon. I'm the viceroy representing Sentetor Vaxim. we're pleased to see you've landed safely Your Grace; Lady Isabel Pallanen-Davad." He nodded at each of them in turn.

"Was the armed guard entirely necessary?" Tseneca said to the viceroy.

"Strictly speaking, Your Grace, it was indeed necessary. If the imperial rebels remain in the system, we must take every precaution in order to ensure the safety of our city. You understand."

"Of course." Bella said.

"You should know, we witnessed the true imperial armada enter hyperspace shortly after the city was struck. It would seem they bit off a bit more than they could chew." Tseneca said, put off by the man's potent arrogance.

"Regardless." He said, then snapped his fingers. One of the men stepped forward and began to position Tseneca's arms for frisking. the other man followed suit.

"This is definitely uncalled for" Tseneca snapped, then felt tendrils of calm come into her brain. Bella was asking her to stand off, much in the same way Lucas would. She shut her mouth.

"We will be searching your ships as well." The viceroy said. It wasn't a request.

"Of course." Bella said kindly. "We have nothing to hide from you."

Langdon nodded and the men stepped off, leading a small squad away to search the ships. For the first time, the man looked at them levelly. The air he had carried seemed to fail, and he suddenly looked weary. "This isn't standard protocol." He told them, his voice low. He was speaking to them as colleagues rather than those he planned to interrogate. "This entire situation is highly irregular and you have to be aware of my position. I've been ordered by the senator to welcome you under the circumstances that you are searched and interrogated thoroughly regarding your involvement in the Bespin incident."

Tseneca narrowed her eyes. "Surely he must realize that this is matter of extreme delicacy. Should the regency on my planet, or the royal house of Kuat catch wind of poor treatment concerning myself or Lady Isabel, hackles will be raised. Considering what we've been through, I would advise you take it to heart when I say that we are in no mood for games, Viceroy."

Langdon paused, and nodded slowly. Then, he sidestepped, holding his arm out to point out a path into the spaceports main thoroughfare, to a place where they could speak more privately. "Yes, of course. Right this way Ladies."

"Like Dorthb said," Nor was looking at her nails. "Its the rear deflectors and the flux stabilizers. Also some other minor details that I can take care of myself, But we're gonna need some new parts--"

Jairon cut her off. "Right, so we'll get the parts. What I need is for you to tone down the attitude before I keel haul you."

Nor snorted. "I don't think its possible to keel haul someone in space, but I'll give that a thought."

"Who said anything about space." Jairon grunted. He liked the banter between he and Nor, but this was just too much at the moment. "Just... go find something to do with yourself."

She rolled her eyes. "Lord, Jairon, am I sick of you treating me like a child. I'm not a little girl anymore. I don't need a time out."

He shot her a glare. "I do."

She scoffed, but turned and left anyway, banging the wall of the corridor as she left.

Yorak was grunting something under his breath.

"What now?" Jairon asked. He felt heavy, the weight of the last 24 hours bearing on him like a lead blanket.

"oh, just that we just wandered into a new republic governed planet, and Im fairly sure none of our records are clear... what are you thinking, Blake?"

He clenched his fists. "I'm thinking you need to keep your mouth shut, thats what." He threw his hands up. "Its a frakking nut gallery in here, what is wrong with you people."

He turned and stormed out of the cockpit and into the galley, rolling up his shirtsleeves and pulling open a cabinet. He took out a flask and a short glass, pouring himself an inch of liquor.

"A little early for that, don't you think?"

He turned slightly in time to see Bhren come in. The man looked haggard, but they all did really.

"I think there are some exceptions to the rule." He said. "I count this as valid."

There was a silence, long and tangible. "Why didn't you tell me who you were, Blake?"

Jairon knocked a shot back, and set it hard on the counter. Then he ran a hand through his hair. He wasn't going to catch a break today.

"I was going to. I just had to be sure."

"Well you're sure now, aren't you." Bhren sounded bitter. "Certainly got more than you bargained for."

"Why are you being so bitter, we've already negotiated your price." He said, and looked the other man in the eye. Bhren didn't look away.

"I'm just wondering if im straight on all this."

Jairon narrowed his eyes. "Unless there's something you need to tell me, then yeah. We're straight."

There was a silence as the two men just looked at each other. Then Bhren looked away. "No. nothing."

Jairon regarded Bhren. There was something, he wasn't an idiot. He watched Bhren, who looked almost lost in the space of a moment. He wouldn't press him. At least not yet.

Knowing now that his brother had died not years ago as he had thought, but recently, in a political skirmish on Thyferra, in the arms of the woman he loved put a mark on Jairon's heart. a pressure he'd not felt in many, many years. In some romance his head played over, Emmett had been a hero, a martyr. and now, in the end, it looked like he had been. The cost though, when proven real, was as devestating as it had been when the imperial rep had shown up on his mother's doorstop to announce Emmett killed in action.

A sudden crash broke him out of his reverie and he and Sethe both faced the door, blasters raised. A group of three armed soldiers were standing at the entrance of the galley, guns shouldered and aimed at the two of them. The two men lowered their weapons in turn, setting them on the table, and slowly laced their fingers behind their heads.

"Hero's welcome." Sethe grunted.

"Figures." Jairon responded.

"You're going to overheat it, you stupid little monkey!"

This is what Nor was saying to Dorthb when the soldiers arrived to poke her with their guns and order her to follow them. Dorthb ran up to her and she picked him up, balancing him on her hip protectively.

"Put him down." one of the soldiers said. He had his gun leveled at her.

"Don't think so." Nor responded and Dorthb whimpered slightly.

"Down." He ordered again, more forcefully.

Nor sighed and put Dorthb down, and he promptly let out a cry and hid behind her legs.

With her hands up, she strode out into the corridor flanked by the guards.

"You're a big frakking bully, you know that?" She said to the soldier and he tapped her hard with the tip of his blaster.

"Shut up, Nor" Jairon was headed by two guards as well, followed by Yorak and that Bhren guy.

"Well he is." She protested and with that the guards pushed them out of the ship and into the humid haze of Varonat.

Isabel walked with dignity, a fashion reserved for the nobles of her homeworld, and generally the stress of her stride had never concerned her. But now it had become a tricky political situation, and suddenly she found herself questioning what her mother would do in this situation. Then again, if she was here, they wouldn't be surrounded by armed guards, in fact, the Varonat government would be grovelling. Isabel wouldn't have even been surprised, as she had seen much greater men beg for favor. Still, this wasn't the Imperial Remnant, but her dual citizenship, being with the Jedi Order, made her more than legal. And with all the protection and liberties of the law. This could get interesting.

"Langdon, I'm inclined to agree with your security measures. Afterall, we must have almost 15,000 refugees here, and with the skeptical nature of Bespin's inhabitants, I can see the stress this has placed on your people." The tall man with the goatee conceded, bowing slightly to praise her agreement. But she wasn't finished. "Still, you are among friends, here and now. We have talents, we can help."

Langdon nodded in a slow drawl, one that made it seem like he believed her, but he said otherwise, "I do not know if you may provided much assistance, Lady Davad-"

"Please, Pallanén-Davad," Isabel corrected, "On my world, we honor our mother's name."

"Yes, of course, my apologies." The man seemed to handle the transition well enough, especially for a diplomat of the Outer Rim. They walked the next portion in an awkward silence, tracing the insides of a new complex as they were lead to a waiting room. Langdon parted, no doubt to brief the Senator of the situation, and two VIP political refugees they had not calculated to encounter.

The room was small, but not without an amazing view. There were jungles and artificial structures, hell, if this hadn't been a new world for all Bespin's baggage, it might've been a nice spot for a little outdoorsy expedition. Still the time ticked by and Isabel could sense her counterpart losing her patience. "This is outrageous." Tseneca breathed under her breath, "I can't believe they are making us wait like this. We could be helping those people out there..."

Isabel nodded, "Varonat has just inherited a lot more responsibility. And I don't believe these men are capable. We should contact our homeworlds and ask that the New Republic send a commission with an administration oversight...." Her voice trailed off as Langdon emerged. He might've heard what she had said, as he released a scowl before returning the fake diplomatic smile.

"Ladies, the Senator wishes to see you now..." Isabel turned to Tseneca and opened her mouth. She snapped it shut, as it wouldn't be necessary to say it out loud. Instead she spoke it to herself.

I have a bad feeling about this.

(Continues from Here)

“Alright E-P0C, stand aside.”

Feeling somewhat better, Jade exited the Hive Queen and her droid stepped to the side once it heard his captain’s voice.

“Are you Captain Anulay?” Said one of the three soldiers waiting nearby.
“Yes. Would one of mind explaining what I’ve heard about questioning?” Jade replied.
“If you could come with us, we need to discuss the matter surrounding Cloud City.” The soldier said.
“Why is that?” Jade asked.
“There’s a lot of questions surrounding its destruction and the influx of refugees that were brought here. As a captain whose ship brought some of them here, we need you to provide us with more information regarding the situation so that we can have this matter settled.”
“Would it suffice if I were to write out a report and forward it to you?”
“I’m afraid not. Someone will need to question you directly.” The soldier replied.
“We’ll also need to search your ship.” Another added.

”Like H*** you do.” Jade thought.

“Which one of you is in charge?” She asked.
“I am.” Said the first soldier.

Jade nodded and then cleared her head, taking a few breaths to make sure she wasn’t still feeling any after effects from Cloud City before attempting to use a Mind Trick on the man.

“Nobody needs to search my ship right now, understood?” She said, doing her best to keep the action as subtle as possible.
“Your ship…doesn’t need to be searched right this moment.” The leader said.

“Exactly.” Jade replied, glad to see that at least for the moment she wouldn’t have to worry about anyone trying to force their way aboard the Hive Queen.

“Now, if you don’t mind, you will take me to talk with whoever’s at the top of the matter regarding this questioning business.” She said, again keeping her efforts to influence his decision as subtle as possible.

“I’ll…see what I can do.” The leader said.

The two others simply looked at Jade and their boss, not completely sure what was going on but aware that something or other wasn’t exactly right.

“You two stay here.” The lead soldier said to his subordinates. His underlings nodded, not sure if there was reason enough to balk at the situation.
“E-P0C, you stay with them, make sure no one goes aboard the Hive Queen without my permission.” Jade added.

The droid gave a quasi-salute, and then Jade and the Soldier began their walk into Tropis-On-Varonat.

”So far, so good.” Jade thought to herself. Normally, she wouldn’t have objected to the situation she had found herself in, but with all that had happened, she was willing to make an exception. Hopefully, if things continued as they were, she’d be back off this rock in no time and without any kind of negative marks on her record to boot.

Tseneca sniffed. New Republic interference wouldn’t help if Varonat’s governement was hell bent on holding them guilty based on proximity and association. She and Bella followed the Viceroy into the conference room, where as expected, Senator Vaxim sat at the head of the table, looking down upon two of cloud cities delegates as if they were insects. Curtis Finche, who must have found his way to the escape ships after his run in with was among them.

She looked at him hard. No doubt the Senator already knew of Finche's issue regarding Mason Kassity, and the document he himself had signed under duress. Regardless, Finche's eyes found hers and looked away quickly.

"Ah. Welcome, Lady Lowry, Lady Pallanen-Davad." Vaxim said, his broad face pulled into a grim smile.

"Is that what you are calling it?" Tseneca said, sitting in the seat pulled out for her by Viceroy Langdon. Honestly, she felt bad for the man. It was obvious his discomfort in this situation, but his allegiance to Vaxim left him more than wanting.

Vaxim's smile was feigned. "Why yes, absolutely your grace. Our discourse here, im sure, shall be brief. We are examining your vessels as we speak, and I have no doubt that your testimony will prove... enlightening."

Tseneca gritted her teeth. Poor Jairon, he hadn't wanted such interference in the first place and now he was expected to have it out with the soldiers in the docking bay.

"You have no right--" She began, but Vaxim interrupted.

"We have every right, madam." he was flushed, as his facade dropped and he gained an air of aggression. "Certainly you must know the implications of your landing here so soon after such a catastrohy. Not only could you have led Imperial operatives straight to our planet, but as I have been informed by Mr. Finche here, he has signed a binding and legal document of Cloud City's annexation, which lies directly on our trade route and is now resting in imperial hands. Do not assume, Ms. Lowry, to tell me what my right is in this situation, because I know it very, very well."

Tseneca lifted her nose at the man. "Mr. Finche was under duress when he signed the document, I know because I was there directly after its signing. Then he was hit over the head by an imperial commandant, and would have died in the disaster also, im sure, if it had not been with the aid of his attendants."

Finche cleared his throat, and piped in. "Its true." To which Tseneca glared daggers at him and he shut his mouth. Bloody coward.

Bella lifted a hand. "If I may." The room quieted slightly. "foremost, we must establish the fact that The Tessaret and its crew, as well as my own involvement, are only in this for the good of the refugees. It was us who shot down the remaining battalion bent on taking out most of the ships, Varonat was the safest place we could turn to."

"Understandable, but that doesn't lessen the threat of invasion, as with Bakura and Bespin." Said Vaxim.

"That maybe so," Continued Bella. "But we saw the ships enter hyperspace directly after the city went down."

Vaxim narrowed his eyes. There was a long pause before he spoke. "It is my understanding, my girl, that your planet is an imperial planet in itself, your mother a leader of a major imperial-driven conglomerate."

Bella looked taken aback, not only by the retroactive use of title, but his comment in general. "I assure you, your Excellency, that this new "true empire" as they have come to be well known as, has absolutely nothing to do with the political affiliation of my parents and Kuat."

"And I am to take that at your word?" Vaxim asked, his voice cold.

"You are out of line, sir." Tseneca interjected. "You have absolutely no grounds to cast these assertions, especially after what we have been through to save those people."

"I believe it is you who is out of line, madam. We have opened our ports in an effort to help the refugees yes, but what we are asking in return is undeniable proof that your loyalty to intergalactic peace is upheld."

"And the fact that Lady Isabel is a Jedi apprentice and that I have a signed contract under the Queen of Naboo as a peace keeper means nothing?" Tseneca was being derisive, but not overly. "Peace keeper" was a little vague, but there was no need to offer up more information about the Brotherhood than she had to, especially not to a man who would just as soon shoot first and ask questions later.

Vaxim looked surprised. "Well, yes, that does change things quite a bit. But I will need confirmation."

Tseneca gritted her teeth. "All you need do is contact Queen Nappolian and the Jedi council, you'll get the answers you need I guarantee it."

Another long pause. It would seem, then, that Vaxim wasn't going to get the blood he sought after. If anything, Damien Pallanen-Davad would be able to vouch for Bella in one place, in which case the council wouldn't have to be brought into this at all. Theoretically.

Vaxim finally spoke up after whispering to the viceroy in a way Tseneca found uncommonly rude. "Very well." He said. "A short recess would be in order. I would preffer if you stayed in this room while I conferred with my men. Do make yourself at home."

He rose and took his leave. Tseneca watched Viceroy Langdon eye Vaxim as he left. When the door shut, he looked at she and Bella.

"This wasn't supposed to go this way." He said bluntly.

Tseneca nodded slowly, glancing at Finche and his associate as they whispered to each other across the table. "They never do, these situations."

Bella sniffed haughtily. "If he thinks he can insult my family and my homeworld with accusations like that...."

"I dont want to defend him." Tseneca said, cutting her off. "But think of what would happen, were the tables turned. I know I wouldn't for a second trust a band of renegades, even if their leaders were diplomatically charged, high-talking Jedi."

Bella snorted. "Technically I have diplomatic immunity, as a padewan."

Langdon nodded sharpely. "The senator is aware of that, but he's cautious."

"Oh please." Tseneca waved her hand. "He's being so completely unprofessional its shameful."

The viceroy seemed to slouch a little, as if embarrassed. "I didn't say he was right."

"This is ridiculous." Nor said, tugging Dorthb by his appendage, as they were escorted onto the docking platform by the guards. Dorthb tripped, squealing as he hopped to regain his balance. "You clumsy oaf." she hissed at him, and gave his mandible a sharp tug. The guard clicked a setting on his gun, as if to remind her that he was still there. She didn't need reminding.

"Nor, I told you to be quiet." Jairon grunted. He and Sethe Bhren moved at the head of the group. They were being rounded into a place farther from the ships.

"Yessir, captain sir." She grumbled.

"Is she always like this?" Sethe asked, and Jairon nodded.

"Worse." He said.

"Oh what would you know." she sneered, but shut her mouth as another soldier went to the group and said something to the leader.

There was a long moment of silence as they talked, going over whatever it was they were conferring.

"Frak. This isn't brain science." Nor raised her voice, talking to the soldier.

"I swear to god, Nor..." Jairon hissed, but she waived him off. He didn't know what was good for him, but she had a pretty good idea of the kind of leverage she could use in this case. whatever got them up and going out of this mess.

She waved one of the guards over. He squinted at her but complied. shoving her hand into her pocket she pulled out a wrinkled sheet of paper, and unfolded it, making sure the grease on her hands didn't mar it more. "Look here." She said and flicked the paper. She pointed hard at the picture. "See that. We are not your problem. That." She pointed again. "has nothing to do with us. Thought you might want to know."

The soldier studied the page, then looked at her, eyes hard. Then he took the page, folded it and pocketed it before turning on his heel and leaving. Nor watched him go with smug satisfaction.

Nor just gave the soldier Nico's bounty with Tseneca's name on it. Needless to say, she and no-one else on Varonat knows that the bounty was revoked. Thought that would stir things up a little more...

“Through here, ma’am.” The soldier, a Sgt. Arreck, said as he opened the door for Jade.

“Thank you.” She replied, though when she walked through, she found that what she had asked for apparently wasn’t what she really wanted. She had expected some kind of office with a bureaucrat she could handle easily. Instead, what she had gotten was a conference room occupied by roughly a half-dozen individuals that looked like they were in-between discussions. Two of them she could partially identify, either as part of the former Cloud City leadership and another as being part of one of Thyferra’s leading families, but names escaped her and she otherwise didn’t recognize anyone.

”Frak.” Jade thought.

“Excuse me, who are you?” Said a man who was dressed in some kind of official-looking garb. He was probably from Veronat itself, since his accent and clothing matched with what she had seen from the locals thus far.

“I’m sorry, there might be a mistake.” Jade replied. “Are you sure this is the right place?” She asked to Arreck.
“Yes.” He said bluntly. “Senator Vaxim and Viceroy Langdon are in charge of questioning. This is where they are handling their own questioning sessions.”

He indicated to the official that had spoken to Jade previously when he mentioned Viceroy Langdon’s name, leading her to assume the two were one and the same.

”Perfect.” Jade thought, recognizing that she had just made her situation just that much worse in a way she had absolutely not been looking for.

“Uh…Thank you.” Jade said to the soldier. “You’ve been a wonderful help.”
“Viceroy.” The Sergeant said with a salute to the man before leaving and closing the door behind him.

“I see.” Langdon said. “May I ask again who you are?”

Jade cleared her throat as she considered her situation and how not to make things worse than they already were.

“I’m simply a private citizen who’s trying to settle a matter involving my ship.” Jade said, walking to behind a chair but refraining from taking a seat. Keeping her calm, she tried to spin things in way that wouldn’t make her situation even worse. “Apparently, someone thought that my decision to help save people from certain doom at Cloud City needed to be rewarded with questioning and having my ship searched. Sgt. Arreck was kind enough to help me fast-track things as best he knew how.”

The Viceroy looked at Jade with a face that made it clear he wasn’t entirely happy with the turn of events.

“Do you have a name?” He asked.

“You may call me Captain Anulay.” Jade said, putting her hands together in the small of her back as she continued to stand, giving at least her stance an official appearance. It was the least she could do to try to dig her way back out of the hole she had started to dig for herself.

Isabel stood from the horrible chair, not only was it uncomfortable, but it smelled like a Hutt's ass. She had been humble up to this point, but she was growing more and more impatient as the time passed. "What could they possibly be discussing?!" Isabel spat at her fellow comrades.

Tseneca was also displeased, "This is all wrong." It didn't matter how many times or the many different ways that phrase came out, they all knew it. The handling of this situation was poor. By this time a new face had emerged, a cold hearted woman by the looks of it. A conversation between the Varonat officers and the woman ensued, and when it was over and a small piece of silence followed, Isabel spoke up.

"He's just an old man on the Outer Rim with nothing better to do. This world is a backwater, political filler." Isabel spat, even hoping to provoke the Viceroy. "Then all of a sudden, their felllow citizens and two high profile political ALLIES" she shouted, "Are treated like Hutt syndicate slime.."

Tseneca puffed an agreement, but added, "It might be best if we just take a breath."

Isabel folded her arms. She was the coolheaded one, but this was just insane. She nodded and retreated to the corner of the room and sat with her legs crossed. If she was going to control her emotions, she'd need to meditate. She relaxed, closing her eyes and just as she achieved a peaceful state, the door opened and the Senator walked in.

"Ladies," He said with a new smile, as Isabel opened her eyes. "It seems we have encountered a small hiccup in your story."

"And that happens to be?" Tseneca's tone was hot.

"In my hand, I hold a piece of paper that one of my officers have retrieved, and if it had not been from your own ship, Lady Lowry, I might've dismissed it entirely. But this I cannot ignore, as these type of bounties are taken quite seriously in the Outer Rim."

"Bounty?" Tseneca rose from her chair, then her face shifted. She must've realized something. "No, that bounty was placed by Vera Nico, you couldn't possibly take it seriously."

"It comes with a planetary arrest warrant, My Lady." His use of pleasantries were becoming annoying.

Isabel interrupted, "If you possibly think for one minute we will sit here and allow you to enforce a bounty placed by Vera Nico, it will be the end of your political career." Her tone was thick with added Kuati authority. "Senator, I beg of you to use logic and reasoning to understand that we accept your authority on this world, we mean only to help those stranded here. We have the financial capability to-"

"You underestimate our-"

"Stop it." Isabel's tone was riddled with anger, "I want a direct line to Kuat, immediately. In case you've forgotten, I also have the capability to broadcast on one of the galaxy's most watched networks. Trillions will see what kind of an ass you really are, in wake of the tragedy we all just experienced."

The Senator's lips curled. "I'll consider your request. But Miss Lowry must come with me."

Isabel looked over. "What are you going to do with her?"

"We are going to have a talk, I'm going to run her through the Republic's system and get this all cleared up."

The Administrator from Bespin, the man without balls, finally spoke. "Senator, I think this all a bit unnecessary, if I do say so myself."

"This isn't Bespin, and I will handle this as I see fit. You signed your world away, Curtis, but I will do everything in my power to ensure that doesn't happen here. Enemies of the Republic come in many forms, including the slim nature of a beautiful woman." He smiled and with a raised hand, so raised the blasters his men were carrying. "Lady Lowry, if you would please follow me."

Tseneca felt her face heat up. That stupid bounty... and how could it have possibly been sidled with interplanetary arrest if Nico had said she....

Oh, right. It was Vera Nico they were talking about. No amount of allegiance was going to keep her from having a chance at arresting her.

She was about to protest, but Vaxim raised a hand. He was looking at her with the sharp expression of triumph on his face. The man was on some kind of power trip... "Have her bound. Diplomat or not, we don't want any... trouble from her Grace." He sneered at her.

One of the soldiers came forward and snapped binders over her wrists with a crack of the mechanism.

"You're making an enormous mistake" She hissed at Vaxim, but the man tilted his head. He had the upper hand and he knew it.

"You can't argue with facts, Lady Lowry."

"Fink." She snapped. "Lowry-Fink. And you should know better then to think arresting me will give you the political up-jump you need to get the hell off this backwater planet."

Vaxim Paled, then his face turned a lovely purple. Tseneca took that with some satisfaction, but she felt a voice in her head beg her not to provoke him. She shot a glance at Bella who was sitting near the back of the room, staring at the Senator. She glanced briefly at Tseneca, then sighed and closed her eyes, either in an effort to look thoughtful, or meditating.

Either way wasn't helpful. With a snap of his fingers, Vaxim ordered the guards to escort, ne, haul her from the room.

****

She had been placed, surprisingly, in a large suite overlooking the jungle from higher on the plateau. Still bound, she walked over to the window. She sighed. From there she could see a few of the Bespin ships and their passengers milling around them like moths to a flame. At least they were being seen to, and not punished for being there.

There was a knock on the door and she turned to see Viceroy Langdon step inside. He shut the door quietly behind him, then turned looking at her with eyes shrouded. He looked tired, drawn in a way that wasn't detrimental to his features. He was handsome in the way that stress made him almost endearing. He approached her and took her wrists, sliding a keycode into the pad and unclasping them. He took the binders and pocketed them.

"I've convinced Senator Vaxim that it's unbecoming to keep someone of your stature in a prison cell. Under the condition that you are guarded, you will be kept here, unbound, until your hearing."

She rubbed her wrists. "this is so..."

He held up a hand. "I'm aware." Then sighed, looking out the window at the refugees gathering. "Its not ideal, no. You were right about him, he thinks he can bring himself more acclaim by arresting you. He went looking for traitors and he got a renegade convict."

"Thats not a political charge!"

"I know, I know. But someone backed it with an arrest warrant. Whoever backed it wants you put away, I just hope it doesn't come to that."

She was momentarily taken aback by this man, he was a complete stranger and yet he was doing something so inherently good.

"Why are you doing this?" She asked him, meeting his gaze. He had deep brown eyes, thoughtful eyes.

He sighed, and removed his hat, running a hand through his dark hair and replacing it as he exhaled.

"Because its the right thing to do. Senator Vaxim..." There was a contempative pause. The man winced slightly. "He doesn't always know whats best... for everyone."

Tseneca knew that look. It was the look of one who was serving a man whose judgement was questionable, to say the least. A man who was as much of a detriment to society as he was to himself and the people around him.

She gave him a small smile. "Thank you, Viceroy Langdon."

He smiled back, and for a second, it seemed truly genuine. "Jonathan." He said "You can just call me Jonathan, for now. If you'll excuse me I have some other of our guests to attend to. It would seem Captain Anulay is less forthcoming than we would have preferred."

Ah, yes. The dark haired strict looking woman who had arrived shortly before her embarrassing incarceration. "Can't say I blame her." Tseneca grumbled.

He paused before the door. "Do you need anything else? I can send someone in to see to your injuries, if you like."

She touched her face, suddenly embarrassed in front of this attractive man. "Its.. fine. Actually... If you could keep an eye on the status of my escort, I would greatly appreciate that. Maybe let them know where I am?"

He looked her over one last time and nodded a quick yes before disappearing out the door.

Tseneca went to the window again and looked out. The sun was setting and it was causing a hazy warm glow on the glass. She sighed. It was going to be a long night.

As Tseneca...walked away.... Isabel couldn't believe the turn of events. She breathed outwardly, letting a stubborn arm cross get the best of the Viceroy who only retreated after his master, but it didn't matter, she was done with these hokey proceedings. She looked at the woman who had entered late, no doubt scheduled for her own interview. "Good luck," Isabel breathed, blowing off any response she might've given. Normally, she would've been much more polite, but she didn't exactly feel like it given the circumstances.

Isabel returned to her TIE fighter, and accessed the long-distance communication. She wasn't surprised to find that she was under some kind of dampening field, no doubt the planet's attempt to avoid attracting unwanted Imperial attention. She screamed, only keeping her mouth shut, attempting to let the frustration escape her body.

Gods I hate the Republic, She thought, This is why we have the Imperial Code, these little proceedings are a waste of time.

She tried to relax and collect the proper Jedi attitude about her, but in order to do that, she would need a walk, a long one at that. She started through the spaceport, which was crammed with vessels from all over the galaxy. There were a large amount of repair work being done, while others passed around food and medical supplies. Isabel felt the anger rot away, afterall, they had just been through one of the first major tragedies the known galaxy will experience with the True Empire's return.

She bent down to scoop up a medical kit. She wasn't exactly a field medic, but her last mission had been on Cataris IV, the site of a well publicized plasma fire, an event that had nearly destroyed the entire capital. She picked up a few techniques, enough to treat the mild wounds. She stopped short of a woman's group, all of them looked pretty bad, and the Force was tingling when she came across them.

"Hello," Isabel said, trying to stay casual. They looked up at her and went back to their drone like state. "Can I help you? Would you like me to take a look at those?"

She brought the medical equipment over, but they waved her off. It was then she noticed their religious insignia. They were extremist, in a way, as they would only allow their bodies to heal naturally and by the course of their mother goddess. Isabel bowed and turned, but then she remembered a loophole in their beliefs. She closed her eyes and used the Force to lift several nearby rocks. "I am a child of the Light."

They looked with renewed faces, all seemed very happy, and began to chant, praising their goddess for her intervention. Either way, it allowed her to treat several questionable fatal wounds. They certainly would've taken some time to heal, if she had not been allowed to treat them. After having giving the Sisters of Enylia a blessing, not something she was exactly comfortable with, Isabel moved on to the next vessel. It looked Corellian in nature, the hull fragmented and shot to hell. It was a miracle it even made it into hyperspace.

"She's a bit beat up, but I can get her to fly again." A gruff voice from behind her. As she turned to meet the voice, she was surprised to find a handsome man, possibly in his late twenties. His face was unshaven, but his clothes... his clothes were worthy of the finest district, possibly even on display at the Kau Kau Galleria. She forced a smile to conceal her impressed shock. "Can I help you with something?"

"Isabel, my name is. Help you, can I?" She flirted, well, tried to flirt. She had to admit to herself, she was terrible at it. Somehow the Jedi scripture of Master Yoda came out as she tried to speak to him. "Medical needs, have you?"

The guy laughed, wiping his hands clean of what looked like hyperdrive coil repairs. "Where are you from?"

Isabel flushed and turned away, she realized she could speak a little better, when not looking at him. "Yeah yeah, sorry. Long day. Uh, Kuat. You have a name or are you just going to let me stammer on?"

"Ah, so you're the TIE pilot." She could sense his curiosity and finally he said, "You can call me Griff."

"Okay...Griff..." Such an unusual name, she turned around, "Pleased to meet you....I am....." She groaned internally, "Replacing the coils on your hyperdrive..... are you?"

"Actually I am, maybe when you're done with all these people, you could give me a hand? I could pay you...."

Isabel nodded and started her exit, "Yes! That would be lovely!"

Griff smirked, "Uhh? What is lovely? The ship repairs or payment?"

Isabel could tell she was digging herself into an awkward hole and retreated shouting only, "See you soon, I will!" It wasn't long before she was off and onto the next ship, mostly applying bacta treatments and large bandages. As she ruffled through a hearty crew of miners, it wasn't long before she tripped over someone.... "Oh, excuse me..." She started, then realized it was a familiar face... The woman from the Senator's office.

"Oh, hello." Isabel said, "My name is Isabel, I never caught your name...."
She stuck out her hand.

"It's been over three hours..." Sethe dropped the tent equipment he'd retrieved from one of the refugee ships and started assembling it. There weren't enough accomodations for the escapees here at Tropis, and from what it seemed, no-one had gotten a confirmation from the New Republic that help was on the way. The government here had already dispatched medical aid and food, but they needed to set up a place for Bespin's people to go, especially because of Varonats erratic weather.

Blake looked up from where he was stretching the canvas of another tent. "I'm sure they're fine. And anyway, what do you care? I thought the two of you were two seconds away from killing each other."

Sethe shook his head. He felt anxious, in a way he knew to be more chemical then realistic. He hadn't taken his sedative in almost five hours and it was wearing on him. But then again he wasn't feeling all that great about about what had happened with Tseneca either, so it could very well be that.

"I'm not so much worried about whats going on with her, she can take care of herself. But I'd like them to stop treating us like fugitives...."

Blake glanced over to the soldiers who were watching them warily. He shook his head and continued pulling the ropes for the tents. "Honestly, you'd think they think we're gonna start a shoot-out or something."

"I'd like to hope we're gonna get our ships cleared so we can leave soon. The longer we're here, the more uncomfortible I get."

Blake slapped the rope in place and stood back, admiring his handywork. "You know, I'm beginning to get something of a hesitant hero vibe off of you, Bhren."

Sethe looked up. "What do you mean."

"It's just that I know you're not a coward, but you keep running from the situations at hand, and I wonder what your running from." He shrugged. "or to. far be it from me to accuse you of retreating."

There was a pause as Sethe pushed the retaining poles into position. He stood up and wiped his hands on his pants, eyes narrowed. "You don't know anything about me, Blake."

"Thats true. But Emmett did, and he thought quite a bit of you." He looked at his fingers as if counting off. "He said you were a good fighter, had excellent moral standing, and were an admirable friend. That guy doesn't sound like the man standing in front of me"

Sethe huffed inwardly. "I don't need a lecture, Jairon."

"I know that, but you could just tell me--"

"No. I don't think I need to. Just get me to coruscant so I can go about my business." Sethe turned his back on the captain and headed up one of the vessels. He didn't want to talk about Emmett, or his life, and least of all Tseneca. He couldn't help to think how much simpler his life would have been had he not gotten that stupid transmission from his friend. If he'd never met Tseneca Lowry-Fink in the first place.

He sighed. The thought made him a little sick. He just needed to go home, that would fix this.

Antsy, He looked out of the ships port. The sun was setting. And on top of that, it was starting to rain.

"What was that about?" Nor came up behind Jairon. She had Dorhtb sitting in his makeshift sling across her back. He was wriggling and playing with her hair, tying knots that would come loose as soon as he tied them. Jairon removed a strand that looked particularly painful and undid the gnarl, not bothering to look Nor in the eye.

"I don't know why you let him do this, you come back from walks with snarls fit for a mynock.

She smiled slightly. "It just makes him so happy... and a little extra brushings not gonna kill me. You didn't answer my question."

He sighed and leaned an arm against the tent. "He's upset because I asked him why he was in such a rush to get back to coruscant."

"aren't we all?" She answered, Looping her fingers in the sling strap. "In a rush, I mean. Jairon, I don't personally want to be here longer than we have to either."

"None of us do." He said and wiped his forehead. The humidity was getting to him. "But we need to stay here until they let us go, and not only that, there's plenty of work to be done settling these people in."

"you." She said and pointed a finger at him. "Always the altruist, never the opportunist."

He smiled slightly. "Well, I wouldn't say never"

She looked into his eyes. "What are you not telling me Jay?"

"Lets walk." He steered her by the arm around the tents and together they walked in between a few of the ships. "Do you remember I told you stories about my brother, the one that died a long time ago?"

"The imperial?"

"Yes." he looked at her. This girl was so close to family for him, a second little sister. He'd rescued her when she was sixteen and she'd grown up to be smart and independent, in a way he'd not expected. She deserved to hear this. "Well, Sethe was one of Emmett's friends back in the academy. I tracked him down after I got wind he was at cloud city. I thought maybe I could learn something."

He continued the story, watching Nor listen with her brow knit. When he came to the end he said. "And I wonder how much Tseneca can tell me. She spent time with him, before he died.... both times. The fact that he never mentioned her made her some crusade he needed to do on his own... like a secret he thought he didn't need to mention to his family. But they loved each other. I think that makes this whole thing worth sticking around for, don't you?"

Nor swallowed visibly, and a shadow passed over her eyes. She pushed Dorthb's hand away from the side of her head slowly. "gosh. Jairon, I had no idea."

He looked at her, brow furrowed. "Well I didn't tell you. Whats wrong Nor?"

She cleared her throat, but stammered slightly. "I.... I don't think you're going to like what I have to say..."

He set his jaw and gritted his teeth. Sethe was right, it had been over three hours since the women had been gone. "Nor." he said slowly. "What did you do?"

Nor finished her story stiffly and peeled her eyes away from Jairon. He looked terribly pale all of a sudden.

"I didn't... I thought maybe..."

When he spoke his voice was unsteady, as if he was holding back. "Of all the things you've done, I think this might be the most senseless."

"I didn't think--"

"No." He snapped "You never do."

She felt her stomach drop, and shame flushed her face. Honestly, she thought she had been doing right by Jairon and the crew. A bounty that would bring in more money than an odd job they pulled would have let them relax for just a bit. She's wanted to do him and the others a favor. Not to mention she'd wanted the woman out of her bed and on another planet as fast as possible. yes, she assumed that was a selfish motive, but the other reasons had been for the others.

She couldn't explain that to Jairon, he was furious. He was looking around almost frantically. Then he spotted Bhren and hailed him over.

"What is it now?" Sethe said when he approached.

"Tseneca's been arrested." Jairon's voice was blunt.

Sethe looked shocked, his eyes wide with incredulity. "What!? why? How do you know this?"

"You said yourself, they've been gone longer than they should be." he nodded toward Nor. "And little miss here has sold you both out to the authorities. Apparently there's a bounty on your girl's head."

"What!?" Sethe said again. "Thats insane! Nico lifted that bounty nearly a month ago. Not to mention the fact that Tseneca's diplomatic status outweighs the authority of a two bit price on her head."

"Don't ask me, I'm just telling you what I know."

"We don't know for sure though-"

A voice interrupted them. "Actually, your friends spot on."

Nor turned. Viceroy Langdon was approaching them, face wan. "They have indeed arrested Lady Lowry-Fink. She's being held in one of the guest suites up in the compound. She's scheduled for a hearing in the next few days."

"You can't do this!" Sethe pushed forward, but Jairon held his arm.

Langdon's eyes flashed. "I'm not doing anything, its Senator Vaxim thats heading the investigation. I'm doing my best to diffuse it, but the bounty is backed by a political warrant for arrest. Whatever her Grace did to piss Vera Nico off, someone in power agrees she should be locked away."

"I don't believe this." Sethe was shaking his head. "Do you know who she is? this is insane!"

Langdon looked at him with an expression that suggested infinite patience. "Of course i understand the implications. Please know that I am doing everything in my power to help, I really am." With that he turned and left, heading over to where Isabel Pallanan-Davad and a raven haired woman stood talking.

Jairon rubbed his face, then looked at Nor, his expression cross. "Well, I hope your happy." He said. "Your little scheme backfired. Looks like we'll be here for a while."

Jairon turned his back on her, storming off to the middle of camp where aids were serving food to the refugees. Sethe looked at her dolefully, his energy sapped.

"I'm sorry." She said. "I didn't--"

He held up a hand, then ran his fingers through damp hair, and looked at the sky. The sprinkling was starting to turn into an actual rain. "Don't tell me, tell Tseneca." And he left.

Nor looked down at the droplets starting to mark the ground at her feet. She hadn't felt this bad in a really long time. She kicked some of the dirt, and headed back to the safety of one of the tents.

Watching everyone else leave the room, the idea quickly seemed like a good idea to Jade as well. She turned to follow them, but was stopped by the time she reached the door.

“Ms. Anulay, if you wouldn’t mind?”

She turned to look back into the room. The man who had entered and brought up the bounty charge returned to the room.

Captain Anulay, if you wouldn’t mind.” She said. He was clearly the kind of man who relished his own power and wasn’t afraid to let people know it, so Jade was more than happy to throw back what power she had back at him, minimal as it was.
“Fine, Captain Anulay. If you insist.” He said as he took a seat.
“And you are?” Jade asked.
“You can call me Sentator Vaxim.” He replied, being sure to let her know who held the power in the room, which was now occupied by him, a pair of guards, and Jade. “Please, have a seat.”

“I’d prefer to stand, if you wouldn’t mind.” Jade said, returning to where she had been standing before.

Vaxim looked at her a moment, then relented.

“If you insist.” He said with an off-hand wave. “Then we can jump straight to the matter at hand, since you’re so eager to get your interview over with.”
“I’m not sure that’s necessary.” Jade replied, ready to attempt a mind trick on the man if she thought it necessary. With as big an a:evil::evil: as he was, she doubted she’d loose much sleep over manipulating the situations to her advantage. “After all, you seem to have much bigger issues on your hand.”

“No, I believe its quite necessary.” Vaxim replied. “And I would advise you not attempt any of your little Jedi tricks to convince me otherwise.”

Jade was taken aback by the Senator’s advice.

“If I’ve been informed correctly, several of the people you rescued mentioned you levitated them onto your ship.” Vaxim said as he looked at a datapad. “Admirable work.”
“Thank you.” Jade said, her eyes shooting daggers at the man.
“You’re welcome. Though know for the record, we are recording these interviews, so someone will notice if you attempt to use less than above the table methods to direct this conversation.”
“Understood, Senator.” Jade said, with just enough venom in her voice to keep it from being obvious.

“Excellent. Now if we may…” The Senator began.
“If we might ask, for the record,” Jade said. “what about my interview makes it more important to a Senator than investigating a bounty warrant posted by one of the galaxies most wanted terrorists? Or getting to the bottom of who in their right mind would have the b***s to back it up with a recognized arrest warrant?”

Her words certainly shut the man up, but Jade quickly began to realize that perhaps she had just dug her hole even deeper as Vaxim looked at her and shot daggers right back. Still, once she realized that she probably couldn’t dig her way back out without a complete and utter sacrifice of her dignity, she decided to keep going.

“I can’t imagine what Senator could possibly view such a move as being a benefit to the continuation of their political career.”

There was a thick moment of pause as Vaxim looked back down at his datapad. He typed a few things into it and then stood up and looked at Jade.

“You’re right.” He said with a sinister smile. “You’re absolutely right. This is a very important matter, Captain Anulay. As such, it would only be in our best interests if the search of your ship and your interview were postponed until an indeterminate point in time. We can’t possibly take such resources away from getting to the bottom of this matter.”

Jade kept a stern face as her heart sank. She had started out by looking for a way to get off Varonat ASAP. Now, it looked like she had just given this a:evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil: of a Senator reason to keep her on planet as long as he felt like jerking her around.

“I’m sure you’ll recognize that we’ll need you to stay on planet until then. And that trying to leave prematurely and blasting past our defense network would certainly not reflect kindly upon your record.”

Jade’s glare tightened as she continued to look at the man. If looks could kill, hers would have already turned Vaxim into a smoldering pile of ashes.

“Understood, Senator.” Jade said. He was a jerk, but he was right. Trying to ‘blast off’ planet in a manner that would be required would certainly not be good for her reputation, even if she was justified in doing it. There were far too many planets out there that looked at the ‘what’ rather than the ‘why’. She would either have to wait until he was ready to get it over with, or find another way of getting her, the Hive Queen, and her crew off-planet.

“Very good.” Vaxim said as he began to exit the room. “Dismissed.”

Jade practically threw the chair onto its back as she stormed out of the room. Her mind not quite in it’s ‘figure out how to fix things’ mode, she stopped halfway back to her ship to try to clear her head. Her crew didn’t deserve to have her come back to them in her current condition.

Sitting down, Jade tried to calm herself with a simple Jedi breathing trick, which did a surprisingly good job of calming her down before she re-encountered one of the women from the interview room. An Isabel, as she introduced herself.

“Jade Anulay.” Jade replied, accepting the woman’s hand and giving a proper handshake in return. Surprisingly, she discovered that the woman gave of some kind of Force signature when they shook hands, one she hadn’t noticed before.

System must still be out of wack.” she thought as she hoped the remaining effects from Bespin wouldn’t last long-term.

Tseneca spent the evening pacing, then she took a shower, then she paced some more. At just about the moment that she thought the plush carpet was going to wear through she fell back on the bed and looked at the ceiling.

Who in their right mind would place an intergalactic arrest warrant on a bounty given by one of the most notorious terrorists since the civil war? Of all the enemies she'd made there was no one she could think of with enough political clout to instigate such a warrent. And why would they? She'd done nothing.

Besides put her uncle in a vegitative coma....

She sat up. No. that couldn't possibly be it. But Thyferra was an imperial planet, even if she had full rights to the cartel. She couldn't possibly expect not to reap the consequences of her actions leading up to Dmtir's downfall and her repositioning as head of Thyferra's government.

She took her hair down and started re-braiding it, thinking hard. She would have her hearing in a matter of days, maybe less, and had no evidence against what she assumed was her supposed crime. How could she defend herself if she didn't even know for a fact what she had done.

She sighed and pushed her braid back. Sitting in this stupid room was just too much. She stood and walked to the door, and pulled the knob. Locked. she should have expected as much. In frustration, she kicked it with the toe of her shoe. Droyk it, nothing was easy, was it?

At the window, looking down at the refugees that gathered along the ships she couldn't help but think about Cloud City once more and the horrible way it was destroyed. It was completely senseless, and so many people... so many...

She had tried very hard up until this point not to think about Kyp, Coral, Kris, Sara.... Jonas.....

Her heart felt heavy. Lucas .... She just couldn't feel him, otherwise she would be inclined to think that of course, he had survived. But no, she couldn't fool herself that way, and if she spent more time thinking about the implications... her heart would break.

She had never felt so alone, even when she had been alone for so many years. Perhaps it was the taste of human contact, of loving someone, many people, in one space these past months; and then losing it so completely in one fell swoop of a hand. Perhaps it was knowing that she could have done something about it, that this would have ended better had she not made a move.

Sethe had told her what she's already told herself. It was her fault that Bespin fell, as easily as it would have been had she killed Krauss without a moment's hesitation. In that case, Vaxim was right to hold her here, she was no better than a collaborator, aiding and abetting the criminals who'd massacred millions.

She wanted to tell Sethe that she had faced the terms, knew he was right. In some backhanded way, she wanted him to forgive her. But he wouldn't. As certain as she had stood there ready to unleash whatever beast lay within her, on him, her once-lover, she knew she had betrayed him and everyone she cared about. She had driven him away, on her own volition. Had told him to never touch her again. She was a coward, and a monster, who had no control over the things that writhed in her bones, deep down in her. Only some string of a barrier separated her from becoming the darksider she feared entirely, Kyp had seen that and had warned her. And now that he was gone, how on earth would she be able to hold back the things that threatened to consume her?

What, in this Galaxy, did she have left to lose?

you promised him.

Her thoughts broke through. A promise to a dead man; what use was that? But she had, hadn't she. and she had called him master... and for once, that had actually felt right. Now, as love was gone, and hope, maybe a promise could be the one thing solid and real enough to keep her from fading.

She lay down on the bed, her head resting in the crook of her arm. By now the rain was falling in sheets across the window. Absently, and despite herself, she hoped that wherever Sethe was, he was warm. This thought surprised her, but not enough to break her out of her space of mind. Sethe would never love her again, and she had taken pains to assure that. She had to let it go. Let him go.

She had to let all of them go.

Isabel smiled as the woman spoke her name and something happened when they touched. She was Force-sensitive, but it was a point she had already made. It was her name Isabel recognized. Jedi Dropout. Not only that, but she was the daughter to the one of the Masters of the Council. These individuals were well known, including the likes of Ben Skywalker, Jacen, Jaina and Anakin Solo. This was an interesting turn of events, despite her estranged connection to the Order. In a way, she was one of the chosen disciples, always would the Order favor an offspring of a Council Member, including one vaguely dark as Jase Denora. Isabel put her best mask on, she was good at concealing her thoughts from others sensitive to the Force's privy goggles.

The fact of the matter was that her Master was quite interested in the youth, but the turn of events and her departure, created a different outcome. "Pleasure to meet you, Captain." Isabel referenced the woman's initial entrance into the Senator's 'interrogation' room. In the distance a deep rumble followed a sharp hiss of lightning across the sky. It wasn't loud and no other thunder followed the rain that began to pour down on them.

"Is your ship close?" Isabel shouted, some of the repair crews scrambled to close up hatches and wiring panels. "Belay that, come with me, we can make it to the Terraset. The Captain owes me one!" The jog was simple, but they didn't make it in time to save them from being drenched. Isabel pounded on the closed ramp. "Captain, open up in there. It's Isabel, Tseneca's friend."

She was going to include Jade, but figured it was best to leave her out of it now. Should the man allow them shelter, saving them from puckering up with a mining ship, Isabel would be eternally grateful. And once they were inside, Isabel would be able to crack the lid on the daughter of Denora.

Sethe caught up to Bella and her friend in time to pull a piece of canvas over them, shielding the small group from the rain. Bella was banging on the tessaret's hatch, imploring Blake to open it.

there was a hiss and the three of them stepped aside as the gangplank released allowing them entrance. They tramped up, Sethe shaking out the tarp before shutting them in.

He shivered. The rain was far from cold, but the ship was.

"What's the damage?" He asked Blake.

The Captain shrugged. "They didn't touch anything. Nothings been taken or moved, at least from what I can see. Looks like we're clean, relatively."

Yorak popped his head out of the service corridor. "They aren't looking for two bit smugglers, Jairon, their looking for treasonous imperials."

Blake rolled his eyes, then fixed his gaze on the woman Bella was with.

Bella perked up. "Oh, I'm sorry, this is Jade Anulay one of the other ship captains unfortunate enough to land here."

Handshakes went around the room. "Least you were lucky enough not to be arrested." He turned to Bella. "What happened?"

Bella shrugged. "She was cuffed and taken from the room. There wasn't anything they can do to stop it." She sighed. "Vaxim's on some kind of power trip, and since the bounty's back by a political warrant, there's nothing we can do about it."

Sethe crossed his arms, exchanging a look with Blake. "I'll contact Minerva and the Ashern. Hopefully she, or K'nika, might be able to sort this out. For all we know it has something to do with Dmitr."

Blake nodded, having been told of his brother's death at the hands of Dmitr's men during the siege of Thyferra that had returned the Lowry estate to power. He pointed to the bridge where Sethe transmit his message.

To be honest, Jairon Blake didn't bother him as much as he intended to be bothered by him. It was so easy for Sethe to put up barriers between himself and others, but no matter how he wanted to hate Blake, it just wasn't going to happen. From his point of view, Jairon was a good man, kind, altruistic... and he had a good head on his shoulders. There were many other men who would be so willing to take advantage of a bad situation, and Blake wasn't one of them.

Before he could leave Nor walked in through the hatch, shutting it tight behind her. She looked around the room, her face flushed, and started to unclip the sling that held her little insectine friend. Dorthb leapt down and rushed between Blakes legs, hiding behind him. The bug man nuzzled his captains calf in a way that was supposed to be endearing.

"Nope, sorry." Blake pushed Dorthb away and he whimpered in protest. Blake was stern "You and your girl got us in quite a pickle and I'm not going soft on either of you." He snapped at Nor and threw a thumb back to the engine room. "Get to work Nor, we need this thing ship shape so we can leave at a moments notice."

"Capt--"

He held a finger up, his voice gruff. "Do it. now."

Sethe watched as Nor's shoulder's slumped. She went to Dorthb, picking him up, and the two of them made their way down the hall to the engine room.

"Do you think you're being a bit hard on her?" Bella asked Blake, shaking her hair out.

"Not a bit." Blake countered, nonchalantly.

Sethe said nothing and headed back to the bridge, just as the small group began their interrogation of Jade Anulay. He didn't need another diversion, he just needed to figure this all out.

There was a knock at the door early in the morning.

Tseneca pushed the coverlet away. She'd not bothered to undress, only removed her jacket and her boots and slid under the blanket where it was warm. She's fallen asleep to the sound of the rain, and now, awakened with her cheeks wet. Gingerly, she wiped the tears away, embarrassed to have been crying in her sleep. She couldn't even remember dreaming.

She stood, and padded barefooted to the door, testing the knob. It released and she stepped back, folding her hands over her bare arms against the morning chill.

It was Viceroy Langdon. He came through bearing a tray piled with food and something hot in a mug. She let him through.

"Assuming maid duties?" She asked. He smirked as he set the fare down on the table, then pulled the chair out for her indicating for her to take a seat. She put up a hand, gently refusing him. but then thought better of it. The truth was she was starving. And very cold.

"Why is it so cold in here?" She asked

He raised his eyebrows. "Its the artificial air. The senator's household is from a decidedly cooler planet. He can't take Tropis' humidity like we natives can."

She took a pastry off the tray and bit into it, putting a hand to her chin as crumbs dripped down. "Your senator isn't a native?"

Langdon shook his head. "He was assigned to us by the Republic. Varonat's government allowed it under the provision his seconds and advisors remain Varonati in full. Can I sit?"

She motioned to the chair and took a long drink of the hot drink. It was bitter, but soothing. She felt herself melt slightly, even as she watched the Viceroy make himself comfortable at the small table.

"Can I ask you a question?" He said, propping his elbows on the table.

"Be my guest." She responded.

"What exactly we are looking for during this investigation of yours? There has to be some reason the Republic has called for your incarceration."

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Is that what this is about? you're here to interrogate me?"

He sighed and picked up a muffin. "I'm just trying to make this easier for you."

She arched her brow. "By bringing me food? Viceroy-"

"Jonathan, please."

"Jonathan." She corrected. "You have to understand what... what we all have just been through. My friends were on that city when it went down. We risked our lives to bring these refugees to safe harbor and to have that questioned..." She shook her head, then went back to his original question. "I've done nothing to deserve being held prisoner like this."

He exhaled and leaned back in his chair. "I was afraid of that. I thought maybe if there was a way for you to plead guilty, the charges could be minimized. But I supposed that's not for us to decide. Vaxim has ordered your hearing for this afternoon, but As soon as the republic gets here, you'll be handed over to them. I don't think there's anything you can say to get him to alter his decision."

She pushed back her chair and stood up, taking the drink with her to warm her hands. She paced, thinking hard. There were quite a few things that could help actually...

"I'm pregnant." She said, turning to look him in the eye.

He almost spat out his muffin. "you're... huh?"

She shrugged, frustrated. Suddenly at the end of her ropel "I'm currently with child, does that change the course of things? Or how about this."

She moved her hand up and lifted the tray into the air, allowing it to hover for a split second before slamming it into the wall behind Langdon's head. She was so furious all at once, at being kept here ,at being held captive against her will.

The Viceroy swore and sprang to his feet, looking at the mess that now lay at the floor of the room, smattered food and a large brown stain starting to spread on the plush carpet. He turned his head and stared at Tseneca, long and hard.

Without pretense, she burst into tears, suddenly, simply unable to hold it in anymore. She dropped the mug, allowing it to tumble to the floor, spreading another puddle of liquid at her feet. She turned her back to the Viceroy and held her face in her hands. Embarassed but unable to stop, she sobbed quietly, her shoulders shaking as long buried sorrow, fear, remorse, regret and plain simple exaustion exited her body in quaking tears.

She felt hands grasp her shoulders and steer her to the bed, imploring her to sit. Langdon held onto her, circling her body with powerful arms, stroking her hair with callused hands. She let him, even despite herself. and eventually, after a long time of just sitting there being held by this man, this kind man that she barely knew, she pulled away.

Tseneca wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand, not wanting to look at Langdon. her embarrassment was enormous, but at the same time, she didn't really care.

"You... didn't have to do that." She said, then hiccuped. She felt her face turn red, mortified at the stupid humanity of it all.

He chuckled softly. "You know, actually, i'm impressed. I've never seen a Jedi before, although I've read about you."

She finally looked at him. "I'm not a Jedi. I'm... was... training. Kind of. Its a long story."

He took her face in his hands and used his thumbs to wipe away the rest of the tears, being gently around her wounded face where her bandage had come off in the night. His voice was low when he spoke, gentle and patient.

"I've got some time."

Jade pulled out a commlink as she made her way aboard the Terraset and attempted to contact the Hive Queen.

“Gorrop, I got caught out in the storm.” She said. “I’m taking cover aboard inside another ship.”
”<Understood.>” The Verpine said from the other side. ”<Did you settle the investigation matter?>”

“Unfortunately no.” Jade said, saying as little as she could about it. She knew she’d have to explain the situation to them at some point or other. But for now she was going to use her separation from the crew to give herself time to think about how to do it. “I’ll fill you in on the details later.”

”<Understood.>” Gorrop said, and the channel was cut.

“So, Jade Anulay, was it?” Asked Blake after his crewmembers had started out of the room.
“Yes.” Jade replied.
“Who’s Gorrop?” Yorak asked, indicating to her conversation from before.
“He’s part of my crew.” Jade replied.
“He some kind of bug?” The Ishi Tibb asked. Jade guessed he had heard at the least the sound of her friends voice and was guessing based on the sounds.
“Verpine.” Jade replied, being blunt about her answer.

“Heh.” Yorak said to Blake. “What do you know, she has a Dorthb of her own.”
“Hardly.” Jade replied. “I can’t recall anyone in my crew ever carrying him around anywhere.”

“Isabel said you got trapped here as well?” Blake asked, changing the subject.
“Yes. I was unfortunate enough to have been on Bespin when the Empire attacked.” Jade replied.
“Captain to Captain, how’d you encounter such a misfortune?” Blake asked, an inquiry about what her business had been there.
“Trying to pick up a delivery for a client.” Jade said, deciding not to say much about what she had been trying to retrieve or who for. While it could have been interpreted as a sign she had been doing something less than legal, the truth was that Jade was more interested in not spilling the beans on what she would have been paid for. It wasn’t exactly a good business plan to go around spilling the beans on the people who made a regular business of paying her.

“But before you all turn this into another interrogation session, perhaps I should get some information from the rest of you.” She said, not interested in the conversation being a one-way street of information. “I don’t think I got your last name.”

Jade loosely pointed towards Isabel as she looked towards the woman. She felt like she recognize the woman from somewhere, and recalled her mentioning something about the planet Kaut, but couldn’t put a finger on who she was supposed to be.

“Shesh.” Isabel said. “Isabel Shesh. I’m a close friend and associate of the ruling Pallanén-Davad family.”

While her force senses weren’t quite up to snuff yet, she couldn’t help but notice some subtle glances in Isabel’s direction, giving Jade reason to believe that the woman wasn’t being exactly honest. However, she decided to let it slide. The woman no doubt had a reason for hiding her true identity, and Jade was sure she’d find out more about the motives by letting her get away with the deception than by calling her out on it.

“You a Jedi?” Jade asked, wondering if the woman was part of the order or a fellow freelancer such as herself.
“You sensed the connection too, then?” Isabel asked, referencing their previous handshake.
“Of course.”
“Officially, I’m a member, though I spend far more time aiding the Pallanén-Davad family. Yourself?”
“Used to be.” Jade said, though didn’t say anything more on the subject. The Jedi weren’t exactly something she had interest in discussing at length. It touched far too close to the subject of her dad.
“Wait…I think I remember you. Aren’t you Master Denora’s daughter?”

Jade felt her mood go cold as the woman brought up “the subject”.

“I’d rather not talk about it.” Jade replied with a blunt demeanor.
“Sorry, it’s just that I can’t help but wonder. Your dad’s a member of the council, while you left the order completely. What happened?”
“I’m sure that if you recognize who I’m related to, you shouldn’t have much trouble figuring that out.” Jade said, her voice starting to suggest that Isabel would be better off dropping the subject.
“I know, but it that doesn’t provide the same kind of insight.”
“The topic is off the table.” Jade said on no uncertain terms. “I’m not discussing it.”
“You’re sure I can’t…” Isabel tried to continue.

“I think it’s best if you listen to her.” Blake said, helping Jade bring the topic to a close, at least temporarily, and giving them a means to move on to something else.

Isabel's ploy to hide her true identity didn't exactly go over too well, nor did her attempts to garner any information about Jade's father or her departure from the Order. Perhaps it was a little too much too soon, but she had made her intentions clear. Another reason, and maybe a little less obvious, was that Jade could not be trusted. If the woman anything, even remotely, like her father, she was dangerous. "Sorry," Isabel quipped, and let the two Captains engage in conversation, though it was much more dull, causing her mind to wander. Isabel caught Sethe's eye, an unfamiliar face, but she knew him based on holocommunications with Lucas. The few times the pair ever spoke, he would talk about how much he disliked this man. It was time to get to know him.

"You know Tseneca?"

"I thought I did." Sethe said, and she couldn't tell if he smirked or frowned. She also sensed a lot of anger, much like one could feel the burning nature of a stove if they hovered their hand over it. The Force didn't help her assess him any more than that.

"Oh?" Isabel felt like she was about to create another awkward situation. "Are you friends with her?" He didn't answer, instead he injected something into Blake and Anulay's conversation. Isabel folded her arms and tried again. "You are quite rude, I'm not sure what she sees in you."

He was taken back by this and nodded, "Yeah, I thought that too. But you know what, it doesn't matter what you think, now does it?"

Isabel felt her own cold personality, one she rarely exposed. "You are a poor, pathetic man. My brother is right about you."

"Your brother knows nothing about me." Sethe spat back, "And you know what, we're all doing a lot of talking, but nothing is helping Tseneca get out of that prison."

Isabel snorted, "She isn't in prison, hell, she is probably better off than all of us right about now." She turned to Seth and smiled innocently, "Just relax. Someone is keeping an eye on her, I'm sure."

Blake added, "She's a big girl, I think she can handled herself, but Sethe's right, we might need a back up plan if this doesn't settle out the way we want it to."

Blake had been talking to Captain Anulay, mostly about the trouble with his ship, a topic that steered well away from the heat that was building between the two Jedi.

Jedi, that's just what he needed, some highfalutin magicians on his ship. He'd already subjected his crew to enough political complications, involving Jedi trainees and dropouts would only complicate matters. In fact, Yorak was looking at him with an expression that made him feel particularly low.

"Get back to work." He snapped at the Ishi, and tossed him a grease towel.

Sethe had said something irritating but he ignored it. He was going be the bad guy in this no matter what. He listened to bella chide Sethe and stepped in to that. He might be the bad guy but he wasn't going to give up his job at mediator. "She's a big gitl, I think she can handle herself. But Sethe's right, we might need a back up plan if this doesn't settle out the way we want it to."

Sethe grunted and moved away from Bella. "I tried plugging in the Ashern code Tseneca gave me, but communications aren't going out.
I'll try to contact M'glik when I can. She might be able to interfere."

Bella snorted. "The Thyferran regency won't inerfere with the politics here on Varonat, and Thyferra doesn't currently have a seat on the senate. Vaxim would outrank any representative sent by the Cartel."

"You don't know that." Sethe argued.

"Who's the child of a major political power, Bhren, me or you?"

Bella's eyes were fierce and Blake winced, he needed to diffuse this as soon as possible, or these people would kill each other during the night. "Miss Bella, would you mind to much checking on Nor for me. I hate to think she was thinking worse of me for sending her off."

Bella breathed out her nose. "Sure. Thats fine." She shot a glare at Sethe and left with her nose high in the air. actually, the little firebrand reminded him more of Nor every second. Maybe they would get along.

There was a blinking, and Yorak's eyestalks swiveled to the panel on the side of the service corridor. "Dorthb repaired the rear deflectors. Thats one down and a whole slew to go."

"Better than nothing." Jairon replied. He turned to Sethe. "You really do need to relax Bhren. Isabel was just trying to help."

Sethe made a face. "No she wasn't. Those kid-jedis hate me, they wont hold that back. Bella's no different then Lucas was, rest him."

"See, you sending out an epithet like 'rest him' is not going to make you sound any better."

"Again with the lectures." Sethe turned and left the room, dissapearong into the cockpit.

That left him alone with Anulay. "Jade, was it?"

She shrugged. "Sure why not."

"Sorry about... this." He waved at the empty space where lots of angry people had just vacated. "If it makes a difference, I don't really know any of these people, besides my crew. But I guess that's no excuse."

She didn't smile at him, but he got the feeling she wasn't as... severe... as she made herself seem. "You don't have to apologize for them, I get it. The situation is... less than ideal."

He nodded. "We'll you're welcome to make yourself at home... there's food in the galley, and you can take one of the bunks. It might be a long night."

Space Jawa: I followed suit with the dialogue etc. If this is okay let me know, I don't want to overstep my bounds. I figured Jade and Jairon would have the most to talk about out of all of them, so you are welcome to PNPC him for the time being. Cheers :-D

Sethe took out his bag, and lifted out a syringe. It was one of only a few left, but he had a bottle or two of the sedative left. He filled it and jabbed it needle first into his arm. In a matter of seconds he felt his aggression diminish, his heartbeat slow. He sighed and leaned heavily on the console. This wasn't working. By nature, he was level headed and forward thinking. These mood-swings, the ways in which he continually snapped at people....

He shook his head and pulled his sleeves down, watching the rain patter on the forward windshield. someones keeping an eye on her... I'm sure. He didn't like the sound of that. What did Bella know that he didn't...?

He shouldn't care. Tseneca was... how could he put it to himself? too far-gone. Watching her hands turn to living energy insighted by himself... she would have killed him. Wanted to kill him. She hated him for leaving her friends and she wouldn't forgive him for that, and he shouldn't want to be around someone so volitile, no matter what he felt. He was losing nothing, leaving her. Nothing he couldn't find somewhere else, some other time.

But he did have a responsiblitly to see to this.

He flipped the link on, and typed in the Ashern code in fitSPELL Tseneca had given him back after they'd left Thyferra. After the Siege. There was a long wait, a delay through spacetime as he crossed his fingers. One of the regency would know how to handle this, certainly.

There was a loud click and a tonal noise and suddenly a descernable Vratix face filled the screen. It clicked and garbled in its native tongue then spoke in common.

"Sethe Bhren! Greetings to you."

Sethe smiled, warmed by the deep purple color K'nika had turned at the sight of him. "Greetings, K'nika. Its good to see you well. My regards to your family."

She purred, her mandibles humming together with pleasure. "Your manners, they are good word. But where is my young Sen, my little bird?"

Sethe frowned. "Thats why I needed to contact you. It would seem that an arrest warrant has been released for her and we have no idea who could have sent it. We were wondering if there was some way you could send aid, maybe an adviser of some kind? No one here is fit to represent her in the event of a hearing."

K'nika turned a pale gray. "Apologies, Sethe Bhren, but I am afraid there is little we can do at the moment. Ren's daughter would have nothing doing but to aid herself at this moment."

The Vratix shuddered slightly, but continued. "It is not that we don't wish to aid... the truth is opposite. But there is nothing we can do as our power lies, how you say? Underneath the power?"

He sighed. Bella was right of course. "You can't help because you are outranked by the republic senate."

She shook her head vigorously. "Yes. Yes. That is right. I feel badly, Sethe Bhren. My poor little bird..."

Sethe held up a hand. "Its fine, K'nika. In fact she's been placed somewhere safe. We'll find a way to deal with this, I promise you."

K'nika turned a pale mauve, warmed again. "Then I am satisfied. And you Sethe Bhren. You fare well? It was only a matter of moments should I being contact you. Your illness, It wears still?"

Sethe furrowed his brow. "Unfortunately, yes."

She was understanding. "Then I tell you, at moment we get word from one doctor Avi Shen, he have... how you say... Denin for your pain?"

His head jerked up. "An antidote? You've found an antidote?"

She blushed crimson. "Not I, Sethe Bhren, Not I. Doctor Avi Shen. This... antidote... he wants to... erm... apply it."

The doctor the regency had sent his bloodwork to wanted to test and antidote on him. He grinned widely, his skin prickling with excitement. "This is wonderful news, K'nika. Wonderful."

She held up a claw. "Yes Yes. All you need go is planet, perhaps not long from you?"

"What planet is that?"

"Dac." She responded. "I will send measures to you through the channel."

He nodded to her. The Calamari home world. At least it wasn't backwater. This would be easy, if he could just convince Blake to make a stop before coruscant. "Thank you K'nika. You're help is much appreciated."

"I am obliged, Sethe Bhren. Varily. Please send good word to Ren's Daughter about us here. We are nicely running. And much happy to the internal being, I trust she is well along."

"Yes. Everythings fine in that arena." He grunted. He didn't like being reminded about the baby, especially now, when he was just starting to feel better about taking off. "Once her name is cleared, I believe she's heading to do business on Kuat, I'll remind her to contact you."

K'nika bowed her head. "Obliged once more, Sethe Bhren. Farewell and luck to you."

"And you." Sethe shut the comm off.

He sat down hard in the seat and watched the rain some more, his head full of possibilities, and some last ditch hope.

The Terraset was trash.

Isabel walked to the end of the vessel where a woman was arguing with the Kamarian, Dorthb, if she remembered correctly. The ship had a small crew, making Nor much more obvious, seeing as she was the only female. She sat down in the engine room where the pair fell silent. "I'm Isabel, Tseneca's friend." She said, but knew the woman was responsible for this whole warrant-arrest mess. And between her brothers and Imperial politics, she wasn't one to beat around the bush. "You sure put her in a bind."

"Look, I did what I thought was right by me and my crew." She folded her arms. It was a defensive posture and Isabel answered accordingly by folding her own.

"You didn't exactly have to sell us out."

"And who exactly are you, Isabel? Some Thyferran child cohort? A Lowry Junior."

"Actually, I come from Kuat. My family owns Kuat Drive Yards..."

Isabel could sense this did not sit well, probably the money. They were from two completely different worlds. Nor was poor, selfish and rude. Isabel, on the otherhand, considered herself, smart, educated and kind. Though she had to admit, they both had a hot exterior when rubbed the wrong way. "I see," That was the only thing Nor had said at first, but continued. "Thanks for your help on Bespin, and if you don't mind, your royal highness, Dorthb and I could use a hand with the hyperdrive."

Isabel could tell this was going to be a challenge. She sighed, rolling up her sleeves, "I think I know my way around an engine room.... what did you need." Nor and Dorthb looked at each other.
