Luc Brautis scrolled nervously through the datafiles on his secure terminal. Rumor had it someone had bombed the the Imperial Defense Council. His sources had strongly suggested that he not to reveal anything too sensitive, only that some fatal disturbance had befallen the High Moff, the Grand Admiral of the Imperial Navy, the Grand General of the Imperial Army, and several Moffs. Two days prior, he followed those recommendations to the letter in informing the Union of the catastrophe.

Besides, it wasn't as if he'd been hiding much: all he knew was that Intelligence strongly suspected a bomb and the identities of the deceased. He was usually the last to know things; it made for handy plausible deniability. Nothing was worse for a diplomat than to be caught lying: being lied to, however, and not being any the wiser was forgivable. It had probably prevented wars more times than not in the history of Galactic civilization.

He mused for a moment, idly touching his graying blond hair. Apparently, the council as a whole was to meet the next day—well, probably within a few hours given the time difference between his office on Corulag and Headquarters on Bastion—to hear a report on the incident and decide on a course of action. Well, they'd hear a report at least; the Council was not known for its ability to make snap decisions. And usually, when they tried, Brautis' life became quite hectic. That was why Quille had to go, after all... he couldn't stop rattling the saber.

He wondered if they'd inform him officially of what would happen, rather than him relying on his information pipelines. Then again, if they did, he might be obligated to report it to the Union. Of course, then Fey'lya would try to catch him in a half-truth (he never lied... knowingly) using the information from NRI operatives. That was always the game they played. Quiet assertions of superiority, but never blatant conflict. Fortunately, Brautis had the patience and experience with the game to play against a grandmaster like Fey'lya. He was quite certain that anyone else the Moffs had sponsored (officially, the GU courts and Senate decided) for sending to the Galactic Union would've snapped and shot the Bothan years ago. Wouldn't that be hard to explain...

"Minister Brautis," his intercom chimed. "You have a visitor."

He blinked his dark brown eyes. He had no meetings scheduled for the day. "Who is it?"

"He appears to be a Jedi, sir. Shall I send him in?"

A Jedi? A flare of defensiveness shot up the diplomat's spine, with a touch of fear. Was the New Republic making its move? Had Skywalker finally snapped?

No, no. I'm sure it's nothing... "Send in the Jedi."

Jase was growing tired of politicians. Valure's response had been minimal; and now he had to pass on his concerns to a minister rather than the Moff Council themselves. Life had been so much simpler when it had been his job to kill men like this for credits. They were all the same; and he was actually trying to help by giving this information.

At least he had been able to use the refresher on the Fury and get new robes. He had managed to apply some bacta, but his ribs would take a few more days to heal fully and he still had a few scrapes and bruises. Walking into Bratius' office after waiting for clearance, Jase gave a curt nod to the man.

"Minister Bratius, thank you for seeing me on such short notice."

Brautis stood to greet the Jedi, starting to stretch out his hand. Then he heard the Jedi utterly butcher, mangle, and mutilate the pronunciation of his name. Despite being the one of the two heads of the Galactic Union, being known by name to quadrillions of sentients, it seemed this particular Jedi was too busy playing with his lightsaber to hear the proper pronunciation of the politician's name.

For a moment, Brautis pondered if Skywalker was merely recruiting more backwater hayseeds to populate his Jedi Order. Then again, being from the Outer Rim world of Axxila, he knew—first-hand—that the stereotype of the Outer Rim hick wasn't necessarily true.

I wonder if Fey'lya would suffer this as gracefully. "A pleasure, Master Jedi. What brings you to Corulag this day?" he asked politely and serenely.

Wow, okay, sorry about the Valure thing. It won't happen again :? Also, really Ams? I was tired and got the spelling wrong :P

Jase crossed his arms as Brautis greeted him. Despite the polite tone, Jase could glean a sense of unease that drifted from the minister. It didn't matter, though, business was business.

"I have very important news, Mr. Brautis. I am Master Denora, from the Jedi Council. The Jedi Temple was attacked reently, I don't know if the news has reached Corulag yet. It seems that the names and locations of several Jedi were stolen from our archives. The attackers were Mandalorians, if their armor and tactics were any indication.

I managed to kill one, but at least two more escaped with the information. Given the history of the Jedi and the Mandalorians, I have reason to believe that there could be a threat to Jedi living on Imperial worlds, as well as any civilians living near them. I understand that the Remnant cannot possibly keep guard over every citizen, I will trust any Jedi in Imperial space to be forced to defend themselves.

However, I believed this was information the Moff Council should at least be aware of."

Brautis took in the information, showing no reaction. Indeed, he had not heard of the Temple attack. The fact that this Jedi had actually been engaged in the battle and came to the Union capital to report the crime was impressive as well.

"Thank you for coming all this way, Master Jedi," the minister replied. "I will see to it personally that this information is passed along to the proper authorities.

"If there is nothing else, I wish you the best of luck in finding these Mandalorian thugs and bringing them to justice."

"Of course, Minister Brautis, I sincerely hope that no harm comes to any Imperial citizens because of this. Thank you for your time."

After another curt bow, Jase turned and left the office. He needed to return to his academy.

The last signature of the day had been placed on the flimsie. The three-eyed Gran assistant bowed gracefully and took the paperwork, leaving Borsk Fey'lya alone in his office. He needed the time.

The Bothan rested his heavy head on a furred hand. He felt as if he could collapse onto his desk. It had been another hellish day. They were coming more and more often this year. Who would have thought? Borsk had been doing so well, the Union had been running so smoothly, and now, there were embarrassing complications to ruin his success. Why did beings have to be so stupid?

The bottom had fallen out of the markets. Why? Some childish firebrand from Kuat had deigned to descend from her supposedly-enlightened existence to destroy the Intergalactic Bank on Denon. Denon was the economic center of the Union, second only in importance to Corulag itself. After all the time he had spent convincing people to look away from Coruscant and Muunilinst as the galactic capitals, he thought he had failed. He was sorely mistaken; the stocks reacted as if Coruscant had been sucked into a black hole.

He had just signed the order, as an executive, to artificially hold up the Union Credit standard. With virtually no competing currency, its value was solely defined by its value. It was as beautifully simple and bloodily complex as that. The document was now on its way to be co-signed by Brautis. The Senate would have a field day with this decision in the morning.

Borsk wearily stood, stepping forward to look out of the massive window. Years ago he had stared out at Coruscant, a city erected solely by the wills of countless trillions who had lived there over hundreds of eras. Now he stared at something that rivaled the greatness of the Old Republic, something that he had helped create, something that was, at long last, good for the people. He couldn't let it come crashing down.

Such thoughts were premature, he told himself. The Union was built to survive despite the shaking of the foundations below it, so it was said. It was willingly supported by almost every major world of the galaxy. There simply were no significant, competing interests. So it was said.

But perhaps the pressures were too great. Brautis was not being forward with Borsk. His decades of experience on the political stage had told him that much. Brautis had connections to the Empire, and he knew about the death of Fel before the Representative Council had been briefed on it.

Borsk wasn't certain if Brautis knew the reason behind the attack; regardless, the lack of that information was a big, glaring efface to his administration. The Union, save by a two-thirds Senate vote or a lengthy court battle, could not extort information from a member state that was unwilling to release it. Borsk maintained his own connections in the Spynet, like any good politician, but embarrassingly, he could not obtain the initiator of the Bastion attack. The Empire's secrets were locked away airtight.

And while the Remnant went lock-and-key like the old Zend empire, the galaxy floundered helplessly in ambiguity. They were paralyzed. Mandalorians were attacking, vigilantes were striking, and mysteries still abounded.

Damn them, Borsk thought of the Empire. He curled his hand into a fist. How could they be so moronic? Didn't they know what was at stake? Didn't they understand what the Union was all about?

The aged Bothan keyed the lift. He had to rest. Or at least try to.

Fel, the High Moff of the reformation, was dead. The Empire had clammed shut. Valure had been attacked. Half of the Union's de facto military had been decapitated.

For once in his life, Minister Borsk Fey'lya did not have a next move.
