Running narrative summary

Round 0 (initial setting) {
Although the sun was low in the sky, the city remained soaring high among the clouds, seemingly defying gravity as it hung motionless before the orange and red backdrop. After enduring a difficult take-over by Imperial forces, it seemed that the relative peace within the city had been restored, but that quiet was about to be shattered.

A number of transport vessels made their way through the clouds, heading straight for Cloud City. The New Republic symbol was emblazoned on the sides of each ship and in front of them all, apparently leading the pack was none other than the Millenium Falcon.

As soon as they were in range, laser bolts flew past. The anti-air turrets were already on alert, which tipped off the New Republic that they might not have such an element of surprise after all. Despite the defensive attacks, the ships made their way past the barrage and landed near the edge of the city. One by one, the troops piled out and assembled, waiting for orders from their commander.

Meanwhile, in the center of the bustling city, the available Imperial troops had amassed and were ready to move into their defensive positions. Whoever controls the city controls the clouds, and the battle was only beginning...}

Turn 1 {
Bespin's twilight began to settle into dusk as the Republic and Imperial forces flew over the city in the clouds. The attacking force, led by General Solo, had landed and commenced their attack, branching off into two groups: one would evacuate the civilians, while the other, led by Solo directly, would begin an assault on the Imperial defense force.

However, the Empire was not caught off guard for long. Before the first Republic transports touched down, Imperial commander Conch had scrambled some of his defense force, sending fighters into the atmosphere and troops into the streets.

Whoever the victor, it would not be an easy battle. }

Turn 2 {
The battle was well under way with casualties appearing on both sides of the fray. While the Empire made a valiant effort with their defenses, it was no match for Han and his strike force. The Republic was beginning its push toward the Governmental Plaza.

And that was just the beginning. The other Republic troops that had separated from the main force with the intention of beginning the evacuation of citizens, met unexpected resistance from the Imperial troops stationed in the area, but were not about to give up in the face of the enemy. }

"Solo?! And you let him get through the lines? You incompetent wretch!" High Colonel Maximilian Conch howled at his subordinate. "You stupid, worthless, pathetic heap of Bantha feces! Get out of my sight!"

His face was now as crimson as the bands that streaked the Bespin sky. He waddled to one of the controllers in the command center. "You there! Have the CAP find the Rebel scum and report their location. And if they see Solo... exterminate him with extreme prejudice. Leave only enough remaining for DNA identification!" he cackled.

"...and terminate with extreme prejudice if sighted."

"Copy that," noted the pilot leading Sword Squadron. "All right, squad. Listen up. Some Rebels have decided to crash our little party. We are to locate them and radio back their position and strength. And if you spot their field commander, try to make sure he swallows some blaster fire before those groundpounders get the chance."

A chorus of affirmative calls crackled over the comm. "Break into flights, fan out at 120-degree intervals, then sweep your sectors."

The fighters formed up into three flights, and tore off to the edge of the city, the piercing howl of their engines deadened on the ground by virtue of their altitude, their ground-scanning sensors sweeping the towers and spires of Bespin. As they reached the outer edge of the city's disc, the fighters turned and swept the edge in a standard counter-clockwise motion. Each flight swept a pie-shaped section until the jubilant cry came over the squadron leader's com. "I have them! I have them!"

"Send your coordinates to command. All fighters, converge!"

The battle was joined.

"Sir! Our CAP has found them!"

Colonel Conch turned with a gleeful expression. "Excellent! Ready the bombers and scramble the other two squadrons in case backup is required."

He paused a moment. Solo had an unholy knack for escaping from situations he had no right to. "And send a platoon to set charges on the main reactor, just in case. If the Rebels gain the upper hand, I will vaporize Cloud City out from under them!"

Imperial combat air patrol has sighted enemy ground forces and is converging on them. Scimitar bombers are being equipped with payload (Thermal detonators in internal bay and concussion missiles on outer racks). TIE Avengers and remaining TIE Interceptor units are being launched for patrol and reinforcement. Avengers carry standard missile loadout.

Requesting permission to dispatch 38 troopers to the main reactor to set charges. The remainder are holding in a defensive position around the government command center, with E-Web and rifle positions behind cover and in buildings.

End turn.

Battlemasters' Commentary: In this post, Moff set up his initial placements. This is just an introduction round, and there is no winner or loser. While most of this post was perfectly fine, not that there isn't really a need to meticulously say what numbers of troops go where; this battlesystem is not reliant on numbers, not even numbers of units (unless we're talking about larger units like AT-ATs or Star Destroyers). In fact, stating numbers for these smaller units isn't encouraged.

This post offered a good combination of narrative and clear-cut orders to CMAC, which was definitely helpful.

This also combined another element that is interseting to note. Moff requested to add an objective; that is, he requested to take some troopers to the reactor room to plant charges. Now, he doesn't have an objective to do that, at this point. However, after the battlemasters discussed it, we approved the objective and added it to the next post. So, now Moff can work his way towards that objective, if he so desires.

The flat plain of the landing pad was awash in various hues of orange and red as Republic transports settled down on the sleek surface. It was near dusk and the strange display was a direct result of the waning light of the sun reflecting off of the clouds that made up Bespin's unstable atmosphere. It might have been a pretty sunset, but it was the last thing running through the minds of the men now emerging from the transports and scurrying about to unload equipment. War was on the horizon and any good commander knew that war was about as unpredictable as Bespin's own atmosphere. There was no telling what they'd face but if there was one thing Han Solo knew, it was that they would be ready.

"Well, that didn't take long," Han grumbled under his breath as he stood with hands on hips and squinting off into the distance. Several dark specks were circling in formation close to their position, the telltale scream of their engines a dead giveaway as to what they were. TIEs.

Snapping his gaze away from the picturesque horizon with the wind whipping wildly at his hair, he waved down one of his men and began barking orders. "Get on the horn and get us some cover over our heads. Tell 'em to take care of those TIEs before beginning their runs, got it? We don't need to be ferrying innocents outta here in a firezone."

"Right, sir," the middle-aged man acknowledged with a clipped nod.

"I'm gonna start moving the strike team forward. You hold down the fort here and keep 'em busy. I'll let you know when I'm in position." He flashed a lopsided grin. "This should be fun."

Motioning towards a group of soldiers clustered together in the corner of the landing pad, Han started to move them forward into the depths of the city itself.

NR transports and drop ships successfully land on Cloud City. Air support is called in to combat TIE Fighters before beginning their evacuation efforts. And finally, a group of soldiers led by Han Solo, breaks away from the main group to make their way into the city itself.

End of turn

Battlemasters' Commentary: This is also a good example of a post. Not too long, not too short, and mixing narrative and orders, like Moff's post before. Han's cyan section was also very helpful to clear up any ambiguities.

However, the Empire was not caught off guard for long. Before the first Republic transports touched down, Imperial commander Conch had scrambled some of his defense force, sending fighters into the atmosphere and troops into the streets. He had also ordered a last-ditch plan; to destroy the city's reactor if all seemed lost. Time would only tell if he would succeed in this attempt.

Whoever the victor, it would not be an easy battle.

The setup round has ended. All objectives were accomplished. Turn 2 has begun. High Colonel Conch has received two new secondary objectives. Permission for Imperial forces to carry on the plan to go to the reactor has been given.

Battlemasters' Commentary: The battlemasters will provide a commentary like this to split up rounds, declaring the winner and loser (there was no winner or loser this round; the next round, there will be). We'll also communicate straightforward information in cyan (or, once again, if it's secret, over PM).

Conch watched as the demolition team disappeared from view, deep into the city. If, on the minuscule chance those filthy Rebel terrorists managed to threaten his position, he intended to send them and the traitorous civilians plummeting into the core of planet, to choke and die in the poisonous clouds, or be crushed by the increasing pressure deep in the gas giant. The idea of the terrorists suffering a delightfully slow, agonizing death lifted Conch's spirits.

But they were quickly dashed. "Colonel! We have enemy forces in the civilian sectors!"

"Inform the troops we have in that region to engage. Kill any civilian who tries to side with the Rebel scum, and kill those Rebel swine!"

End of turn, it is a masterpiece as is!

Battlemasters' Commentary: This post shows an example (although an intentional one) of the results of a careless or incomplete battlepost. Moff posted a very generic text, describing almost nothing and instead pretty much just throwing his troops at the enemy. This affected his chances this round, since it combined poor post quality and poor strategy (in this case, almost none).

This is one of the types of posts to avoid. The only thing worse than godmodding is not caring, and this post attempts to show what that looks like. Moff fulfilled his primary objective anyway (since you are always guaranteed to get to your objective (unless you godmod a helluva lot)).

So, Moff lost this turn. Just because you do indeed fulfill an objective doesn't mean that you will win a round, and if you lose around, you'll get less ambitious objectives the next time. Additionally, there was no cyan section, so it was hard to determine what was going on in this post - also a negative.

With his back pressed against a durasteel girder of a nearby building, Han watched with anticipation as the bulk of his ground force surged forward from the cover of the transports to assist the civilian evacuation. Many of the faces he observed were young, untainted by the act of war and rushing into their first battle. As he released his trusty DL-44 from the holster at his side, he could only hope that they had received enough training to see them through to victory.

An explosion suddenly rocked the permacrete under his boots before a harried cry shouted above the sound of falling debris and the ringing in his ears. "Incoming!" The voice was indistinguishable, but Han didn't need to know who had given the warning to realize that the Empire had struck.

The battle had begun.

Crimson bolts of energy shot forth from the Republic line, several instantly splattering against the white armor of the Imperial guards stationed to protect the civilians. Han counted at least 6 tumbling to the ground, lifeless, but there was sure to be more. A small smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. Not bad for starters. Now to press it even further...

Moving away from his position against the wall, he motioned to the troops following under him and joined the fray, his modified blaster coming to life to take down 2 more troopers.

Overhead, the sound of X-Wing fighters soared through the darkening sky. Much like the scene on the ground, the fighters in the air above Cloud City were locked in battle. Han witnessed the tail-end of a burning TIE Interceptor tumbling out of sky before moving forward.

So far, so good...

End of turn

Battlemasters' Commentary: This is a good example of what the average battlepost should look like. It need not get mired in details nor should it spend tons of time counting numbers. It should attempt to make the battle fun (since the whole point of being able to post from an almost purely narrative standpoint is to have fun) for you, and also comply with the objectives. Han accomplished her primary and secondary objective steps here.

The only thing that this post was lacking in was the cyan section at the very end of the post; there wasn't one to clearly define given orders. There should always be a short summary for the battlemasters, or, if you wish to ask something in secret, a PM to all the battle masters that are in charge of the given battle.

Round 2 has ended with Han Solo and the Republic as the victor. No new objectives have been given, but permission for the Republic forces to continue pushing inward and begin evacuating civilians has been given.

Conch slammed his fist on the control panel and stared daggers at Major Fuhrzinger. "You incompetant... blundering," the High Colonel stammered, his face a deep hue of red. Unable to find words, he finally resorted to action and drew his sidearm, waving it in Fuhrzinger's face. "You have failed me for the last time, and now you pay the price!"

The gaze of every officer and technician fixed on their commander. The unfortunate major rose his hands, trying to calm his enraged superior. "But-but, sir..."

But Conch heard none of it. He merely leveled his pistol at the officer's forehead, and pulled the trigger. Before the man had finished falling to the floor, the command center staff were fixated on their stations and monitoring the battle with renewed zeal and vigor.

"Now, then," Conch snarled. "I want all Rebel scum who enter the city exterminated like the vermin they are. And vector the Avenger squadron closer to Sword Squadron. I don't like how that air battle is shaping up."

A few brave eyes turned from the monitors and consoles to gaze on the High Colonel and the corpse at his feet. Conch noticed. "MOVE IT!"

He paused a moment to regain his composure. "And where is our sapper team?"

Deep in the city, away from the fighting, the special missions platoon the colonel had sent to plant charges on the city's reactor neared their objective. They were deep in the bowels of Cloud City, winding their way through utility corridors and trying to stay away from the Rebels. The evasions had added time to their mission, however... time they weren't sure they had anymore. Then again, given the choice between being several minutes late with the charges, and dodging Rebel laser blasts with baradium detpacks...

The lieutenant's comlink crackled. "The colonel is requesting a position update."

"We are three hundred meters from the objective," he reported back. "ETA is less than five minutes."

"Understood. Check in when you reach the objective."

The lieutenant merely rolled his eyes and continued down the corridor, praying to the fates that he wouldn't encounter any Rebels. And that he wouldn't have to blow the charges.

High above, any hopes of peace had been dashed. A savage firefight raged in the city streets. A group of Stormtroopers and Rebels had managed to pin each other down. Over a score of bodies lay in the streets. Even so, the Imperials were slowly, gradually falling back to the government center.

In the civilian sector, the fighting was even worse. Imperial troops had taken to sniping, killing over a half dozen Rebel troops. Another group fired into groups of civilians that tried to run to the Rebels. Two dozen were mowed down without mercy as they tried to reach their saviors.

The streets of the city were beginning to match the blood-red hue of the sky.

The demolition team is almost on the reactor component they were sent to destroy. As it was not permitted in the objectives, I have done nothing involving the air battle between Sword Squadron and the Rebel fighters; however, a second group of fighters was moved closer to provide potential reinforcement.

In the infantry battle, Imperial forces are attempting to hold their ground, but they are retreating toward the government center to solidify their lines. In the civilian sector, guerilla tactics are being used by geographically scattered units (still in com contact... unless the admins say otherwise) to peck at the Rebel lines. Units further from the worst fighting are targeting civilians who try to leave.

Requesting permission to engage the Rebel fighters, deploy air support against Rebel positions, place charges, and fight more openly (i.e higher casualty quotas) against enemy troops.

End of turn.

And that's our little demo on ground battle procedures. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as we did. :)
