A few hours after they had disposed of the ship’s captain and made the jump to lightspeed, Lyra had finished decrypting the data they had retrieved from the police headquarters. Xerros had accepted the ‘pad and retreated to the isolation of the cockpit to browse its contents and plan their next move. He sat alone in the freighter’s darkened cockpit, his feet propped up on the control panel. His helmet was off and sat next to his boots on the board, the blue-white swirling mass of hyperspace reflecting off the visor. In his lap was the datapad, and his brow was narrowed in intense concentration as he flipped through page after page of files.

He growled in frustration and ejected the datacard from his ‘pad, reaching for the last one. So far, the only thing of interest he’d found were anti-crime reports that had briefly mentioned Jedi assistance, but had failed to name the scum. A side note in some desk jockey’s report wasn’t what they had risked their lives for; Xerros needed a solid lead on his quarry. He glimpsed the name of the last datacard, and his spirits rose: Survey, Jedi Order Members. Oya.

With trembling hands, he inserted the datacard.

Immediately, dozens of files downloaded to the ‘pad. One after another, he opened them and glanced at the bios. They were records of all registered Jedi in the Order: Knights, Masters, Padawans and even apprentices as of two years ago. Somewhat outdated, but perfect for Xerros’ needs. He opened up a search menu, unwilling to spend another hour examining each individual dossier, and entered his parameters. The datapad immediately jumped him to a single file. He opened it, revealing the face of his father’s murderer. Shabuire.

The man was young, in his early twenties at the time of the survey. His blue eyes and close-cropped black hair could have fit any number of human males in the galaxy, but the shape of his face, the intensity of his stare, marked him as an intelligent individual. The file listed him as a ‘Healer’ in the Order–Xerros scoffed in disgust at the hypocrisy–and residing in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant at the time of the survey. More than two years ago, but if he was to find anything to track down his father’s killer, he would find it there.

Xerros took one last look at the face of Nik Starskimmer before snapping the datapad shut. He swung his legs off the control board and replaced his buy’ce.

Oya, you Jedi hutuun.

They dropped out of lightspeed a few million kilometers outside the system; just out of range of the planetary defense scanners. Xerros wanted time to run through the plan again. It had to be flawless, or his revenge would never reach fruition.

“Now,” he said as he detached his jetpack, “We’ll enter Coruscant’s orbit at approximately 0900 hours. ATC will probably recognize the ship’s transponder, so they’ll send someone up to investigate.” He began breaking the jetpack down and stowing its components into carry-all. “The comm board has been wired to the charges in the engine block. Once we get that traffic query the countdown starts and we have one minute to abandon ship. We’ll load up into the escape pod, but we won’t launch it; we’ll let the blast carry us into the atmosphere disguised as debris. Once we hit two hundred klicks above the ground, we’ll fire the pod’s booster to soften our landing; with any luck, we’ll come down within a few klicks of the Temple. We’ll make our way there on foot via the lower levels and find an entry point, probably a waste chute or maintenance shaft.” With his jetpack removed, Xerros lifted a coarse tunic and robe out of the bag.

Lyra and Fargut said nothing as he pulled the clothes down over his armor. Xerros checked his appearance in the reflection of his visor. He appeared to be somewhat bulky, but the flowing robes hid any telltale bulges the armor may have given him. He secured his blaster pistols underneath the folds and withdrew one last item from the bag: a cylindrical device capped with a cone-like cup and several knobs and switches covering it to give the false appearance of functionality. He clipped the fake lightsaber to his belt and turned to his partners. “Well?”

Lyra burst out laughing. “You’re the spitting image of a di’kutla jetii, Xerros. I’m suppressing an urge to vape you.”

Fargut snorted and crossed his arms. “You look more like a farmhand from Agamar than a warrior.”

“Jedi aren’t warriors, Fargut.” Xerros took one last look in his visor before stowing it in the bag and zipping it shut. “They’re hu’tuune. Aruetiise. They hide behind their platitudes, but they’re baby-snatchers and murderers, all of ’em.” Lyra and Fargut sobered up. “That’s why this has to be done. We have to show them they’re not invincible, or they’ll spread like a disease, unchecked.”

That wasn’t the main reason Xerros was doing this: hewanted to find out where his father’s murderer was more than anything. As far as Lyra and Fargut knew, however, they were planning on raiding the Temple Archives for the locations of Jedi to track down and kill. They didn’t need to know his true motives…yet.

Although if they were smart, they may well have guessed them by now.

“XC-7727, you are deviating from your assigned approach lane. Please correct your trajectory immediately.”

Xerros listened to the Coruscant ATC channel as Lyra took the freighter into a semi-steep approach angle. The man sounded slightly bored–who wouldn’t be, with a job like that?–and was slow to realize what was actually going on. “7727, do you copy? Your approach vector is outside of legal traffic lanes. Adjust your trajectory or you will be prosecuted.” The man was silent for a moment as Lyra ignored him, then a different voice came on. “This is Commander Bergis to the captain of XC-7727. You are in violation of interstellar law. Shut down your drives and prepare to face charges of piracy, murder, and destruction of public property.” Xerros noticed a trio of blips appear on the sensor board directly behind their ship. X-Wings.

So they had recognized the ship’s transponder.

Fargut entered the cockpit, ducking to avoid banging his head on the hatch frame. “The charges are ready, Xerros.” The big man fished a small remote out of a belt pouch. “Here’s the detonator. It’s pulse-scrambled and short range only, so anyone outside the ship won’t be able to pick it up.”

Xerros accepted the detonator and attached it to his gauntlet under the Jedi cloak. “Good.” They’d decided to modify the plan at the last minute, for safety purposes. Relying on ATC to trigger the charges with the comm board was too risky: they could blow too early, too late, or not at all.

Xerros rose and tapped Lyra’s shoulder plate. “Time to abandon ship. Let’s move.”

* * *

The freighter exploded.

The charges in the engine block gutted the ship, spewing fire and debris behind and below the doomed ship. The bow and midsection lurched forward and began tumbling into the atmosphere as the stern broke away, completely ablaze. Pieces began to shear off the trailing edges of the nose as it glowed red-hot from reentry. Behind the ship, the three ATC X-Wings that had been pacing it were now following it in, their pilots screaming for the orbital tractor arrays to lock onto the crippled freighter. The front half slowed, then began to fall at a more leisurely pace, held back by one of Coruscant’s orbiting tractor beam stations. The aft continued to plummet, however; it was too far into the atmosphere.

On board the tiny escape pod, Xerros had both hands clenched on the crash braces crossing his chestplate. Lyra and Fargut sat opposite him, their helmets off in case the violent ride made them sick. Xerros’ helmet was off as well, but for the sake of his costume. Nausea didn’t affect him.

A small rangefinder was glued to the wall next to the pod’s launch controls. The electronic numbers on the blue screen were scrolling down at an alarming rate. 400 kilometers…250 kilometers…

When the range reached 100, Xerros punched the launch button.

There was a sickening whumph as the pod shot from the freighter’s aft end like a cork from a bottle. By now the stern was breaking apart, so the pod should seem like just another piece of debris. That was Xerros’ hope, anyway. The pod’s forward thrusters fired as it passed below the tops of the skyscrapers, concealing it from view. With the sound of screeching metal it smashed into the door of an abandoned warehouse, tearing through the thin durasteel and coming to a stop in the corner, its nose slightly concave from the impact.

Fargut lifted his crash braces from his chest and kicked off the pod’s door with an armored boot. It flew a few meters before crashing into the far wall. One by one, the three Mandalorians extricated themselves from the ruined lifeboat. Fargut’s power blaster was in his hands, and as he swept the warehouse for any curious interlopers, Xerros and Lyra began trashing the pod’s onboard computer. If anyone found the thing, it wouldn’t be able to tell them anything of importance.

Fargut lowered his blaster. “Clear.”

Xerros took one last look inside the pod, making sure there was nothing incriminating left inside. Nothing. “Move out.”
