Jack lay on his bed reading a short novel he'd bought during his last leave, keeping an ear out for the intercom. Shortly after reaching the bottom of the page, the expect buzz came. Jack rolled off his bed and padded over to the comm unit.

"Commander Denis here."

"Commander, you asked to be alerted when we reverted to real-space. We'll be dropping out into the Bilbringi system in two minutes."

"Acknowledged, thank you Captain."

Jack switched the unit off, then reset the channels for his unit.

"This is Commander Denis to Havoc Squadron. We'll be reverting shortly, so get moving. The Admiral will probably want to make an inspection, so smarten up. If you have any medals, feel free to put them on display. We want the Admiral to know he just took command of the best Squadron in the Inner Rim."

Flipping the device off, Jack opened his wardrobe to dig out his duty uniform. It hadn't been touched since he'd been assigned to the General's command several months ago. He also rummaged through his draws to find the small handful of medals he'd obtained over the past few years. Among them he found his highest award, the Silver Scimitar. The third embellishment of the Kalidor Crescent, it had been a memorable day when he'd recieved it. He stood infront of the mirror and proudly attached it to his uniform. He was ready to show this new admiral exactly what Havoc Squadron was capable of.

Jack strolled down to the hanger bay where his squadron were waiting. The rest of the command crew and other squadron pilots were also present. Vance was giving one of his flight members a dressing down due to a sizable hole in his duty uniform. Jack shook his head. Poor guy. Commander Vance was not a man to cross. It was fortunate his squadron was a bit more resp-

"Good midday commander in chief!"

Jack groaned. Kael stood before him wearing a large number of 'Universe's Best' stickers across his chest. According to his 'medals' he was the best pilot, chef, drinker and pazzack player amongst other things. Jack raised his hands to his head and murmured, "Why..."

"Is there a problem Jack?"

"Kael... just... what the hell..."

"You told us to dig out medals and to give the admiral a good impression!"

"Kael. Get rid of them. Now."

"Aww... but Commander..."

"Now."

Mockingly grumbling Kael proceeded to remove the offending items, screwing them up into a ball and skilfully kicking it into a nearby empty container.

"Yes! Ten points! I knew those would come in useful someday."

"Kael. One of these days I'm really going to snap and get you posted to the other side of the galaxy..."

"Eh. That's no big deal. I might even get my own squadron. Besides, you'd stick by me even if I got reposted, right?" he said, turning to Tarash as she walked up, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her in close.

"Pssh, no way. I'm not hanging around for a guy on the other side of the galaxy. I'd dump your ass and find someone else. Michael's still single right?"

Kael gave her a mock frown, making a disgruntled sound. She simply smiled, pressing his nose with her finger.

"Well, please Kael. Keep your mania under control whilst the admiral is here, alright?" said Jack, turning to leave the 2 love birds alone.

"Don't worry Commander, I'll keep him in line," replied Tarash.

"And how do you plan to do that my dear?" asked Kael in a condescending tone.

"Let's put it this way. You'll be sleeping in your own quarters if you give the Commander any grief today, dear," said Tarash echoing his tone.

Kael saluted in Jack general direction, yelling after him, "Lieutenant Commander Kael Turon, model pilot reporting for duty!"

Jack tutted, but despite this was smiling. Even after recent events, Havoc Squadron hadn't lost its spirit. Not while Kael was around anyway. Moving towards his E-Wing he coughed until he got the attention of his pilots.

"Alright, you know the inspection drill by now. I know we're two down, but apart from that normal procedures. Unit! Form... Up!"

All the pilots assembled into an orderly line, with Kael at one end and Beka at the other. Jack went through the line, checking each pilot as he went.

Staring at the beginning was Lieutenant Commander Kael Turon the manic green skinned Twi'lek in Havoc 2, Lieutenant Tarash Cohmre a blue Nautolian in Havoc 3, Cadet Liana Sunfell a Zeltron female in Havoc 4, Lieutenant Michael Versio a Human from Corellia in Havoc 5, Cadet 'Cypher' (his original name was almost unpronauncable, so obtained the nickname Cypher) a Chiss Male in Havoc 6, Sub Lieutenant Shandria Kurn a red-brown Mon Calamari female in Havoc 7, Lieutenant Zarl Pryde a Bothan male in Havoc 9, Sub Lieutenant Kyra Orainn a purple skinned Twi'lek female in Havoc 10, and Cadet Beka Pellegrino a Deveronian female in Havoc 12.

Missing from the line up were 8 and 11, the recently fallen. Since the replacements were due to arrive with the rest of the taskforce in a few days, Jack realised they wouldn't be in time for the inspection.

Taking his place at the head of the formation, Jack stood ready, awaiting the admiral's arrival.

Jahan arrived exactly on time through one of the Hangar's side doors - something he achieved by arriving early, and waiting for several minutes before entering. This gave him the opportunity to catch up on some paperwork. The paperwork generated by being an Admiral was prodigious.

Squadron Leader Jack Denis saluted as soon as Stresemann had halted in front of him. It was a good salute. Sharp, but not overly so. Respectful, if not technically flawless. The Admiral returned the salute.

"Admiral."

"Commander Denis," Jahan said. He gave the young man a slight smile. "I look forward to having you and your people aboard Viscount. Shall we begin the inspection?"

Saluting once again, Jack began, "It will be an honour to serve directly under your command sir. Havoc squadron is always ready for action. I'm afraid since our recent mission on the outer rim we are two pilots down, however the replacements will be arriving in a few days. Firstly, may I present my executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Kael Turon."

Kael gave a brief salute, being slightly rigid as he did so. It probably wouldn't have been noticable to someone who didn't know Kael, but it Jack did. It was a slight mockery to being the 'model pilot'. He'd be sure Kael got his reward for that later...

"Pleasure to meet you sir!" said Kael, avoiding Jack's disproving glare. Jack decided it was best to swiftly move on.

"As you probably know, Havoc fly the E-Wing class escort fighter. While it may not match up to some of the newer XJ versions, they are more than capable of holding their own. A large torpedo bay and three laser cannons combined with its speed make it my personal craft of choice."

He then gestured towards the 10 astromechs, lined up 1 next to each of the fighters.

"We also use R7 astromechs to aid with navigation and inflight repairs. Some pilots form an attachment for their units, but in our unit this is less common. They do their jobs well, but we see them as any other droid."

Finally, Jack stood to attention once again and finished his presentation.

"Havoc have been running since around 20 years after Yavin and have established themselve as one of the New Republic's best. I personally took command about 4 years ago and since then have worked to keep up the high level expected of our unit. Now our unit stands ready at your disposal sir."

"Good ship, the E-wing," said Jahan, walking over to Denis' fighter and running a hand over the fuselage. Spotless. "You keep good care of your fighters," he added. "Your pilots respect their birds, you respect your pilots, I'll respect you." He gave Denis another little smile. "It's that simple."

"Yes, sir."

"Havoc's a damn fine squadron," said Stresemann, walking back out to face the pilots, addressing them with his arms folded behind his back, "But don't let that get to your heads. Viscount's the finest ship in the New Republic Defence Force, but still..."

The pilots' faces were expressionless, and they were silent. That was good discipline. Almost too good; maybe Denis was too hard on them. Something to look out for. He looked back at the nine men and women. "Despite all that firepower I still need my fighter jocks doing their best. That clear?"

Unision. "Sir, yes sir!"

Stresemann turned back to Denis. Proper smile now. "You've led them well, Commander."

"Thank you sir!"

Jack breathed a sigh of relief inside. It seemed the Admiral was a reasonable man. Meeting a new superior officer was always nerve wracking. Fortunately the Admiral was keeping things flowing smoothly. He also had a passion about his ship the Viscount. Leaders who had a strong connection with their command ships were often the most loyal to their crew. Such people were good to have in command. Jack looked forward to a proper view of the Viscount...

"Is there anything else I do for you Admiral before we begin the transfer of our squadron to the Viscount?"

"No, I believe everything is more than satisfactory here," said Stresemann. He saluted, and Denis returned the gesture. "Begin the transfer immediately, my aide will have the details." A young Ensign, Jahan forgot his name, nodded and produced a datapad. Ensign Hantry, perhaps? They changed so often.

"Very good, sir."

Jahan nodded. "And I'll hopefully be having dinner with Commodore Kiles tonight, I'd like you to come. It's a tradition of mine to dine with my new officers."

"It would be an honour sir. I look forward to it."

Jack accepted the datapad a skimmed through it quickly. Seemed fairly standard stuff, but he'd go through the fine print later after the Admiral's visit.

Several Hours Later

Jack dropped into the cockpit of the E-Wing fighter. The transfer was almost complete. Everyone's personal belongings had been shipped over, and new quarters assigned. All that remained was to transfer the fighters and pilots themselves to the new command ship. Looking at the fighter bay and the various crew running about, Jack realised this could be the last time he would see this ship. It had been a while since his last transfer, and saying goodbye to the ship that had been home for the better part of 2 years was tough. Sighing, Jack flipped the start up sequence and closed the main hatch.

"This is two. All lights are green Commander, ready on your order."

"Two, take lead. I'll bring up the rear and ensure everything goes smoothly."

This was a lie of course. In a simple ship transfer with no hyper jumps involved there was no need for a rear-guard. Jack just wanted to get a last few moments in before he departed from the Izanagi forever. One by one, all of the E-Wings gracefully glided out of the hanger, heading towards the Viscount. As the last of his pilots left, Jack slowly eased up on the throttle and joined the cavalcade of fighters.

"Fairwell, Izanagi. Good hunting," he murmured to himself.
