"Randoth?!

Green eyes opened wearily, the glint of sunlight streaming through the windows, as the shadows of passing vehicles broke the rays into an intermittent display that made his head pound. What was the noise about?

"Randoth, are you awake sweetie?! It's almost mid-day!

The next thought that came to his mid, was Oh shit, that's mom's voice! The immediate thought process that followed was Why am I hearing mom's voice? Oh man, I'm in my old room! I'm in mom and dad's house! Oh.... wait... now I remember... New Year.... Got to come home... Got really drunk last night...

"Yeah, I'm up, Ma!", he shouted back, the sound of his own voice reverberating off of the inside of his skull. Every noise was a headache. Even the dull hum of the climate control in the home was deafening. A maddening cacophany that served to remind him of the consequences of his alcoholic adventures from the previous night.

"Oh.... way to keep up the image of the dreaded Imperial Stormtrooper, Zero....", he groaned to himself as he lifted his head up to get a better view. He was hanging off the foot of his old bed, the upper half of his body staring at the floor as he realized his head was dangerously close to the ground.

This sudden grasp of gravity and physics startled his hangover-ridden mind and he fell to the ground in his surprise. This sudden jolt caused a glitch in his thought process, which caused him to accidentally activate his cybernetic arm.

The seemingly normal looking appendage suddenly set into motion. the hand broke away from the wrist, retracting below it as a blaster barrel appeared. A red bolt erupted from the barrel and put a burnt hole into the wall, which gave a charred, but clear view into the study that adjoined the young stormtrooper sergeant's childhood room.

"Randoth?!, came his mother's startled voice. "What's going on up there?! Are you making another mess with a project up there?!"

His eyes suddenly shrunk back as he realized he would have to pay for the damages this time. There went his last paycheck. It wasn't the first time he had broken something in the house, but those had been kind of intentional. This time, mom and pop wouldn't cover the cost. Even for a stormtrooper, the thought of angry parent struck fear in Randoth's heart.

"Shit, shit, shit..... uh.... I can fix it, Ma!"

"I can't believe you put another hole in the wall, Randoth," his mother said with as much motherly disapproval as she could fit in her tone of voice. "Honestly, I thought we were past this phase." His father, on the other hand, sat silently as usual, the only sound from hi being the muffled sound of teeth chewing food as the family sat to lunch, well, lunch for his parents.

Zero took a drink of water and returned to his salad, trying to ea slowly and get his hangover headache down to less than lethal levels. "Aw, Ma, come on. That's not even fair, this time it was an accident."

His mother shook her head and clucked her tongue with even more disapproval. "I don't even know why you think you need a gun in your arm. Honestly, I had enough of a fright when you lost your real arm. Then you went and had it replaced and rejoined the Stormtroopers. Why do you need another gun in your arm? They already give you one for your job, dear."

He put down his fork and looked at his mother in disbelief. Why did she need to start berating hm? Couldn't she just once let him be creative for the sake of being creative? "Ma, can we talk about something else? Please?"

His mother looked down at her food and quickly ate some more. The room suddenly grew more silent; and Zero thought he was going to lose it between his father's noisy eating and his mother's frantic and anxious fork scrapes.

Fortunately, or not, his mother began speaking about another subject. "Have you met any nice girls?

Zero sighed and took another drink of water. Why did his mother have to be such a typical.... well, mother?! "I'm a stormtrooper, Ma. I don't have many opportunities for dates when I'm on duty, which is like, always."

"So, you're telling me that you have no personal life Mister Busy Stormtrooper? i find that hard to believe. You certainly had one last night, the hour you came in and all. So, have you met any nice girls?"

This was excruciating. She had really missed her calling as an Imperial interrogation specialist. "Well, meeting them and everything is, well, you know-"

"Who is she?"

Zero's eyes widened with disbelief and he almost spat out his water "Ma! I'm not- it's not-, look, I know a girl who is kind of cute, okay?"

"So who is she?

He groaned and nearly slammed his head into his plate of salad just to hope it would put him back to sleep until he had to leave. "Look, she outranks me, okay? So it's not like I can ask her out. Besides, her dad's a Moff. A Moff! I don't want to even try and get mixed up with that. Even if I could date her, if we broke up, I'd probably end up 'missing', you know? Or charged with treason or some such. So let's drop it."

"Well, you're never going to be happy unless you get with a nice girl and settle down some day.", she said, without looking up at him.

"Ma! Can we drop this already?!"

And for once, his father's silence was interrupted by a slight chuckle.
