It was the dream again.

Nik’s brow furrowed in his sleep, and his body shifted on the pallet in his quarters. Images flashed before his closed eyes, but he was powerless to block them out. They were surrounded by swirling fog and flashes of light, but as always he was able to make them out clearly without any difficulty. And as always, he wished that he couldn’t.

A woman, barely younger than he was, stood on top of a boulder amid several short, rocky hills. She was wearing a simple white tunic with fingerless gloves and boots. A red bandana held her short blue hair back, but as he watched she reached up and undid the knot, letting her hair cascaded down to her shoulders. Nik observed silently as she stood before a dozen soldiers holding weapons. They shouted at her to get down and trained their weapons on her, but she stood her ground.

Nik began panting as sweat dripped down his brow. He was still asleep, but he knew what would happen next.

When the woman did not move, one of the soldiers barked a command. A bolt of fire leapt from the barrel of his rifle and took the blue-haired woman in the stomach. She gasped and fell to one knee, clutching the fatal wound. Please, let it be different this time, please by the Force don’t let it continue-

As he watched in horror, several other soldiers fired. Their attacks ravaged her body and left her broken atop the rock. Her wounds were horrendous, yet she found the strength to push herself up on one good arm. The commanding soldier walked up to her and placed his weapon to her head. He said a few words that Nik could not hear, and just as always he was powerless to stop what would happen next. He reeled against the confines of his dream world, screaming at the soldiers to take him, leave the girl and kill him instead. But just like always, they saw and heard nothing except the blue-haired woman’s pain. He tried one last time, but even as he struggled he knew it was futile. Somehow, he could see the soldier’s finger tighten on the trigger-

“NO!” Nik shot upright in bed, his chest heaving and his tunic soaked with sweat. He looked around in confusion for a second before realizing where he was. His Spartan quarters in the Academy weren’t exactly anesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it was far better than what he’d just seen. Like the previous dreams, it never faded away, instead staying fresh and clear in his mind as if to torture him.

Nik closed his eyes and began a Jedi calming exercise, slowing his inhalations and counting upwards to twenty. Four…five…six… When his heart rate returned to normal and he had stopped sweating, he opened his eyes and glanced at the chrono next to his bed.

0400 hours.

Nik sighed again and got up. He needed to talk with Master Tyris.

“These dreams of yours, how often do you have them?”

Nik was seated cross-legged on a wide cushion in one of the Academy’s meditation chambers. The blinds were open and the morning sunlight streamed into the room. Master Tyris stood with his hands clasped behind his back by the window, looking out at the tall blades of yellow grass, slowly bending and straightening in the wind. Tyris was a Kiffu, a near-Human species known for its Force visions and other prophetic acts. They were often paid as fortune-tellers or to perform other sorts of mystical rituals. If anyone could help Nik understand his dream, it was him.

“Once or twice a week,” he answered, keeping his gaze on the back of Tyris’ head. “But when they first started, it was once or twice a month. They’re increasing in frequency.” He thought back to the vision he’d had this morning, of the blue-haired woman being cut down with blaster fire. “And in clarity. Two months ago I could barely make out the shapes of the people in them. Now I can recall their faces, what they were wearing–” Nik stopped without realizing why. He cleared his throat and continued. “–the color of their hair.”

Tyris nodded, his braided black hair bobbing slightly as he considered Nik’s words. Nik knew that Tyris was often gifted with visions of the future, but often they were vague and minor. Not like his, sharp and clear in his mind’s eye even after waking up hours before. Four months ago he had never experienced a vision from the Force before. Now he found himself wishing they would stop.

“This girl–” Tyris began, but almost without thinking Nik cut him off. “Woman.” Tyris turned slightly to stare at Nik over his shoulder, and he felt his cheeks burning. He lowered his head in apology. “I meant no disrespect, Master. Please continue.” Tyris raised a thick eyebrow but chose to accept Nik’s apology. He turned back to the window. “This woman in your vision, you say you have never seen her before? Not even in passing?”

Nik thought for a moment and shook his head. “No. Never.” Although if I saw her I would probably know it, he thought. Her face is burned into my mind. He shut his eyes for a moment, and against the black background of his eyelids he could see her standing atop the boulder, as sharp and clear as if it was displayed on the screen of a datapad. He squeezed his eyes tighter as she was cut down by searing blaster bolts. The vision threatened to sweep Nik away, but he couldn’t take his eyes off her, even when the soldier leading the rest approached her and placed his weapon to her head–

“Nik? Nik!” Tyris’ voice snapped him out of his nightmarish reverie, and Nik’s eyes flew open. “I–what?” He realized that he was panting and sweat had appeared on his brow. Tyris moved swiftly to his side and placed a steady hand on his shoulder. “What is it? What did you see?” Nik’s eyes cast about the room for a moment, searching, until they found Tyris’ face. It took them a minute to focus, and in that second of blurred motion the blue-haired woman’s face was superimposed on Master Tyris’. Nik slowed his breathing and composed his voice. “It was the vision. Again.” Tyris frowned slightly and his brow furrowed in confusion. “The same one? Twice in the same day?”

Nik nodded, and his gaze turned to the window. He had never heard of such a thing either. He wasn’t sure if he was intrigued, frightened or both. Tyris sat next to him on the chair and stared out at the grasslands with him. After a long while, he turned to look at Nik. “What do you think it means?”

He was surprised at the question. After all, hadn’t he come to Tyris asking that same thing? Nevertheless, after pondering his vision, he said, “I think I’m supposed to help her.”

The plasteel mannequin lay flat on the operating table in front of Nik as he spoke to the six Padawans seated in the Academy’s operating room. Instead of the traditional black and white robes of the Order, Nik wore a white surgeon’s overcoat and tunic. His hands were covered in gloves and his face was partially concealed behind a sterile mask. His words were amplified by a small speaker placed inside mask, allowing his students to hear him clearly. “The Force is the most powerful instrument in the history of medicine. Trained healers have been known to prevent heart attacks, heal paralysis, and cure wasting diseases; there is even one account of a certain Master neutralizing a stroke as it was occurring.” His students were completely enraptured by this.

“However,” Nik said, and their expression changed from curious awe to uncertainty. “Use of the Force as a healer requires extraordinary control and discipline. Very few Jedi are gifted with the natural instincts for healing. Most require years of medical training before becoming qualified for the Circle. The Force is not a crutch to be used on every head cold or broken leg that comes your way. Rather, it is meant to supplement your hard-earned surgical and medical prowess.” He clicked a button on a small remote in his hand, activating a holographic slideshow. The students remained silent, but Nik could feel them groaning mentally.

“And believe me when I use the words ‘hard-earned,’” He smiled behind the mask and clicked the button again, advancing the slides. “I mean it.” On the slide an image of a pharmaceutical drug and a list of side effects appeared. “First off, we will explore the practical uses of…”

The lecture took roughly an hour, with two ten-minute demonstrations performed by Nik on the plasteel dummy. As the Padawans left, Nik was peeling his gloves off when a secretary entered. “Jedi Starskimmer?” Nik pulled off the mask and tossed it into the waste bin. “Yes?”

“Master Vucora wishes to see you in the audience chamber immediately.”

Nik nodded at the secretary and began slipping off his surgical gown. “I’ll be there in five minutes.” Moments after the attendant had left, the doors opened again and Nik emerged, clad in his customary robes. He made his way to the turbolift and keyed for the top level.

Once the doors slid open, he stepped out and continued his walk to the audience chamber. Nik passed apprentices, Knights, and even a few Masters as he made his way around the circumference of the Academy. Built over the ancient remains of the Jedi Enclave from the Jedi Civil War, the Dantooine Academy mirrored many architectual choices made by the builders of the original structure, with the exception of durasteel inlays and a small shield generator. Hindsight was a harsh teacher, but it conveyed the message well enough.

Nik finally reached the double doors leading to the open-air audience chamber. He composed himself, brushing away imaginary dust from his Healer robes, and opened the doors with a wave of his hand. Nik stepped through and closed the entrance behind him.

The audience room was breathtaking, even if one had seen it before. It shared the Academy's circular design, and a domed roof sloped upward before ending in a hole half as large as the width of the room. A circular staircase descended about a meter into the center of the room, where instead of cold tile, yellow and green blades of grass danced from side to side in an artificial breeze. As was customary, Nik removed his boots and placed them by the door before continuing down the steps to speak with the room's only other occupant.

Master Vucora had her back to him as he approached her. Nik stopped a few meters away and bowed respectfully. "You summoned me, Master Vucora?"

The Miraluka turned slowly before answering, her invisible gaze piercing him. Nik was too disciplined to shiver, but it felt as if unseen fingers were gently touching his mind and opening his thoughts. After a moment, Vucora nodded. "Yes, Nik. I have an assignment for you." She walked past him, towards a side corridor that was also filled with grass. "Walk with me." Nik followed, his hands clasped behind him as they set off at a leisurely pace. The grass tickled the bottom of his feet while simultaneously massaging them with their touch. It was easy to see why Master Vucora preferred them over tile or even wood floor.

"You must go to Corellia," Vucora said without preamble. "There is a man who requires your skills as a Healer. I have offered your services." Nik nodded. "His name is Representative Tylan Gessen, aide to the Corellian Senator. Recently he has been struck with a rare form of Knowt's Disease. I presume you are familiar with it." Nik grimaced inside. The flesh-eating disease was one of many he'd studied at one point or another. More to the point, it was one which he was trained to cure. "Yes."

"Gessen has been told he has months to live." A slightly wry smile touched Vucora's face. "He will no doubt be grateful to learn that is not the case." Nik shrugged his shoulders uncomfortably. "No doubt. I will leave at once, Master." When she did not object, Nik turned and began walking the way they had come.

"Jedi Starskimmer." Nik halted and turned. "Yes, Master Vucora?"

The Miraluka looked at him over her shoulder. "May the Force be with you."

Nik's eyebrows lifted slightly. That wasn't what he had been prepared to hear. "Thank you, Master." With that he turned and headed back to the audience chamber to collect his boots.

The hangar was quiet, aside from the muffled sounds of the flight crews working on ships. As Nik entered with his medical kit under one arm and his lightsaber on his belt, the familiar scent of starship fuel and coolant forced its way into his nostrils and his nose wrinkled involuntarily.

“Say what you will, but that’s the sweetest stench I’ll ever smell.”

Nik turned and saw the deck chief walking towards him. “Checklist?” Nik put down his helmet and reached into a pocket for the datapad containing his preflight checklist and launch codes. The chief glanced over it, sub-vocalizing the codes to himself before nodded and handing it back to him. “All in order, Jedi Starskimmer. N-527, right?” he asked, listing the registration number for Nik’s ship. Nik nodded. “That’s right.” He took another glance around the bay and tried once again to ignore the smell.

The chief flicked a finger towards the end of the bay, near the main doors. “Right over here, sir.” As they walked, the man seemed to notice Nik’s medkit for the first time. “Ah, you’re a doctor, right?” he asked. Nik nodded and gave him a small smile. “The technical term is Doctor, yes. Most of us prefer Healer.” The chief nodded. “That explains your reaction. I suppose you’re used to a bit of a cleaner environment than this?”

Nik recalled his last major surgery. His hands covered in blood, drops of it at his feet, the occasional spurt from an artery before he sealed it shut. Sweat dripping from his brow and into his eyes until the MD-1 could wipe his forehead.

He said, “Something like that, yes.”

They reached his berth and the elevator rose, carrying his interceptor up to their level. It was a sleek tri-winged fighter, designed as a fast armed courier for the Jedi. No shields, a few laser cannons and a single concussion missile launcher. Light, quick, and maneuverable. Behind the cockpit was his R7 unit. It swiveled its gray dome and tweeted at him cheerfully, and he waved. Nik popped open the hatch next to the cockpit ladder and stowed his kit before climbing up into the cockpit and donning his flight helmet. The preflight checklist scrolled by, and he mentally cleared everything. After the deck chief gave him a thumbs up, he settled in and activated the repulsors. The interceptor lifted off the deck, and he gently steered it out of the bay and into the sky.

R7 whistled a question at him, and the translation popped up on his screen. “Corellia. We’re making a house call.” Nik replied. He relaxed his grip on the stick, allowing the droid to guide the ship into orbit. Waiting for them was a long, streamlined engine with racks on the upper edge.

Unlike most modern fighters, the interceptor also lacked a dedicated hyperdrive. Naturally this made it useless for Jedi purposes, so in addition the manufacturer had included a detachable hyperdrive sled with each fighter. The sled gave it a range equal to that of an X-wing while allowing it to detach should trouble arise–which it usually did when Jedi were involved.

The R7 maneuvered the interceptor into attaching with the hyperdrive booster and beeped an affirmative when they were good to go. Nik wrapped his hand around the hyperspace lever, and for a brief moment he saw the woman from his vision in his mind’s eye. As he pulled the lever back and the stars stretched into infinity, two thoughts entered his mind. I wonder if she lives on Corellia.

The second was, Nah. What are the odds?

N-527 is now at Corellia.

With a flash of light, Nik’s interceptor appeared from hyperspace just outside of Dantooine’s orbit. As he disengaged the hyperdrive sled, he heard Amara gasp in awe behind him. “It’s beautiful,” she remarked upon seeing the verdant green planet for the first time. Nik smiled softly. “Dantooine was once the home of a Jedi Enclave during the Old Sith Wars,” he explained as he brought the ship into the atmosphere and headed for the Academy. “The Force grows in strength around high concentrations of life, so it made sense to establish an Academy here, where students would be able to thrive.” He could almost sense her disapproval at his dissection of the ecosystem into science, so he chuckled. “And yes, it is beautiful. When I meditate, I like to sit in the grasslands for hours and listen to the hum of life. It’s a soothing experience.”

The interceptor touched down on its landing skids as gently as Nik could manage, and the techs rushed forward to as he and Amara exited the fighter. On a whim, Nik turned and offered a hand to her, which she thankfully, if somewhat curiously, took as she stepped out of the fighter. She probably isn’t used to chivalry, Nik realized as Amara shouldered her bag. She’ll get used to it. Of course, first he would have to sell it to Master Vucora, but he was sure Master Tyris would back him when he presented his case. After all, Amara Selanno’s life was in danger, and if she wasn’t safe surrounded with dozens of Jedi, then she wouldn’t be safe anywhere.

They passed through the hangar bay, and Amara watched behind them as the mechanics and technicians prepared to return Nik’s ship to its proper bay. “Everything here is so neat” she commented. “On the Smuggler’s Moon everything was always so chaotic near the starports.” Nik turned to look at her as she caught up. “Oh? How so?” Amara continued to stare at the hangar crews going about their routines for a moment before answering. “Everyone was in a hurry to go somewhere, and nobody wanted to stay for long. There were a lot of accidents,” Amara explained. “But here, everyone has a purpose and a sort of–I don’t know, efficiency about them. They all radiate confidence and good will,” she finished, waving at a crew chief that looked up from his work on an X-wing to smile at them.

Nik also waved, and as they left the hangar bay he responded. “I’ve heard the same thing from one of the deck chiefs before. He says that the Academy has a calming effect on people, Jedi or not. That man you just waved at, for example, was released from the Coruscant Penitentiary on parole two years ago.” Amara’s eyes widened. “Really? What was he in for?” Nik smiled and a mischievous glint appeared in his eyes. “Attempted starship theft. Eight months.”

* * *

Nik flicked a finger at the control panel as they neared Master Tyris’ meditation chambers. The door hissed open, revealing a darkly-lit room with no visible distinguishing features. When they reached the threshold, he turned to Amara and gave her a reassuring smile. “I’ll speak with Master Tyris, and then we’ll handle the issue of your position here. Don’t wander too far.” He walked inside and the door hissed shut behind him, leaving him in darkness. Nik reached out and tried activating the light switch, but for some reason it refused to budge; it was frozen solidly in place.

“Master Tyris?”

No response. There was a slight rustling of sheets to his left, and Nik turned to see that Tyris’ bed was empty, although they were still settling into place…as though someone had just been there. Nik felt his heart rate accelerate slightly before he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he’d been a Padawan, Master Tyris had enjoyed playing this game with him, in order to teach him to sharpen his senses. For whatever reason, it appeared as if he wished to test–

Nik felt the disturbance behind him almost a full second before he heard the snap-hiss of a lightsaber echo off the walls. His own saber was up and ready in a standard Soresu block, angling across his chest as Tyris’ golden blade battered into it. The old Kiffu Jedi smiled and sheathed his weapon. “Very good. I see you’ve been keeping up with your exercises.” Nik had been a Jedi for years now, but Tyris apparently still felt the need to test him from time to time. Normally this would have exasperated Nik, but he had far more important things on his mind at the moment. Without preamble, he said, “Master, I’ve found her.”

Tyris’ brow wrinkled, and he reached out and flicked the lights on with the Force. “Who?”

Her, Master. The woman in my visions.” Tyris’ eyes widened, and he looked over Nik’s shoulder at the closed door behind him. “Did you–”

“Yes.” Nik explained how he’d stumbled across the Selanno’s ship as it was being attacked, and how after his rescue of the freighter its captain had asked Nik to take Amara with him. When he saw Tyris’ disapproval, Nik hastily added. “What was I supposed to do? If I hadn’t said yes, then it would have only been a matter of days before another bounty hunter had found them, and she would probably be dead by now!”

Tyris frowned and turned to walk to the window. He opened the blinds and let the sunlight into the room. “Nik, what you saw was a possible vision of the future. Nothing is set in stone. By interfering with this woman’s life,” he said gravely as he turned back to his former student, “you may have merely set her on a path that will lead to the outcome you have seen. ‘Always in motion–’”

“‘–is the future,’” Nik said. “I remember, Master. But I don’t see how Amara could possibly be in any danger here. The Academy is one of the safest places in the galaxy. Even a bounty hunter would have a hard time infiltrating us.”

“Oh? And do you intend to keep her here for her entire life?” Tyris shook his head. “You are becoming far too involved in this, Nik. I fear your emotions for this woman may be clouding your judgement.”

“‘There is no emotion, there is peace.’” Nik quoted. “Master, I assure you: I feel no attachment towards Amara. I merely believe that if I can do something to help her avoid the fate the Force has shown me, then I have an obligation to do so!”

Tyris sighed and looked at the floor. After a moment he raised his head. “I cannot persuade you otherwise?”

Nik didn’t hesitate. “No, Master. Isn’t a Jedi’s duty to defend the weak and help those in need?” Tyris offered him a soft smile. “Indeed.” He took a deep breath and cleared his throat. “Very well. I will go with you to speak with Master Vucora about this woman.” Nik was slightly surprised. He hadn’t sensed that Tyris would agree so soon. “Thank you, Master. Here, you should meet her first.” Nik turned to open the door, but when he did he was greeted only by an empty hallway. He glanced both ways, and a small bead of sweat trickled down his neck when he failed to see Amara waiting for him. “She was just here…a minute ago…”

Nik sensed Master Tyris’ amusement. “I would suggest you find her before Master Vucora does, Nik.” Nik’s blood ran cold. The thought of Amara being greeted by the cold Miraluka as she patrolled the halls was not a pleasant one. She’d probably scare her away. “I’ll be right back,” he called over his shoulder, running into the hallway, stretching out for his charge’s somewhat familiar Force aura.

Koshina sat on a mat laid out on the ground, her eyes closed, legs crossed, The Force… She thought, concentrating on it, Is so… Vast and… Wonderful… She could feel the Force in everyone in the Temple. Over a hundred Jedi of varying levels could be felt. Jedi of any species, Rodian, Human, Twi’lek and so many more, she could feel. Walking, running, training and sitting, she could feel them doing it. But there was something else, something deeper than the other Jedi in the temple.
She saw Corucant, she saw an amassing fleet of… Imperial looking ships. Attacking, everything they saw. Stations exploding, ships of all sizes, burning. And then, a ship angled itself towards the planet, and began firing.
She opened her eyes suddenly, just before she saw the bombardment hit the ground. What was that? She thought, panting as she looked around her room, disturbed, "I need to see a Master about this." She got up and exited her room. Jedi who walked past her had an weary look on their faces, they didn’t sense anything, they just saw the expression on her face.

* * *

"Master Tyris?" She said softly, trying, but failed to mask her disturbed voice, "May I speak with you?" Tyris was sitting on a pillow in the room, meditating. "Yes," He said, "Come, sit down. Speak." She made her way to a pillow next to him, "Master," She said as she sat down, "I fear I've had a vision." Tyris kept his eyes closed and said, "Continue."

~~Several Minutes later~~

Koshina finsished her discription of her vision, and waited for Tyris to aswner her. "Intriguing," He said, "I will report this to the council, come to me again if you see it again."

"Yes, Master"

The Jedi Archives. Once held high as one of the most complete compendiums of information in the galaxy, it had fallen from grace while the Empire rose to power. Ever since the conflict between the Empire and the Republic had started waning, Luke Skywalker did everything in his power to restore the glory that the Jedi once had and rebuild the archives into something to be admired once again.

As the influence of the Jedi continued to expand, they eventually uncovered the forgotten planed Ossus and its treasure trove of Jedi artifacts and information. However, the arid and toxic planet was far too inhospitable to serve as any sort of base for the Jedi, so many of the things they found were transferred to a newly built academy on Dantooine. Over time, as more and more of the items were collected across the galaxy, the academy built atop the ruins of another slowly began to turn into a hub of galactic information. The Jedi Archives were in a way founded once again on the lush planet, bringing Jedi from all over to marvel at its wonder and study behind its walls.

And for years, those walls had been watched from under the blindfold of a single woman; Master Senna Vucora. She had spent most of the life she remembered with the Jedi Order, usually keeping to herself during what little spare time she had. Always the curious sort, she sought out truth and anything else she could possibly learn both in and outside her training. Once she had become a Jedi Master, she was soon given authority over the Dantooine academy and more importantly, the archives themselves. Knowledge had always been her priority and now it was under her guard as well.

She remained in her office most of the time, going over documents, meditating, or simply just watching through the large, round window into the massive archives below. Jedi bustled back and forth between the shelves, never seeming to leave the room in peace. Yet at the same time, the entire academy itself seemed to have a constant sense of tranquility about it. Such was the perfect atmosphere for a library, Senna thought, which is indeed what she saw Dantooine as.

"Master Vucora?" she heard a voice come from the doorway. When she turned her head to see who it was, she meet the eager eyes of Master Seyrr, one of the trainers at the academy. They had known each other for years during their training, and had remained friends as long as they could. The two women had a close relationship, or at least, as close as Senna would allow.

"The archives are quiet today," Senna noted, turning her blindfolded gaze back out the viewport and to the shelves below. She stood patiently, with her hands clasped behind her back and her face mostly obscured by the shadows from her hood, which she almost always kept up over her head. It was a remaining habit of her childhood that she never could kick, which no doubt made her an intimidating figure, despite her smaller frame.

"Well, it's the first day of the new year. Not to mention the anniversary of the Galactic Union. It is a rather important day," Seyrr answered, carefully gliding into the room, but still maintaining her distance from Senna.

Without turning around again, the Miraluka replied, "It is merely another event of history. One of countless more that we have recorded here. Almost the entire history of the galaxy." Her tone was emotionless, as it had been for some time. She seemed to be growing more distant as time went on, to those she knew and even to herself. It was a strange feeling that she couldn't possibly even attempt to describe. "And yet," she added, "I still continue to find new pieces of the puzzle every week within the artifacts that continue to appear on our doorsteps. It is commonly said that the future is always in motion, and yet so is the past. Curious, isn't it?"

"It's understandable that our archives are incomplete," Seyrr explained, taking a few steps forward and extending a hand. "After all, a great deal of information was lost during the Empire's rise to power."

A thin smile appeared on Senna's lips. "The Jedi of the Old Republic were arrogant. There is no such thing as a complete archive. The more time we spent unearthing the past, the more we allow to slip by and add to the collection."

Slowly, she turned away from the window and wandered around to the front of her desk where she picked up a small, blueish cube. For what felt like a short eternity, she stared into it as deep as she could before finally beginning to fiddle around with it like a toy, passing it back and forth between her hands. "But to avoid the same mistakes in the future, we must uncover as many of the secrets that are buried within this galaxy as we can. Even those that some wish didn't exist."

Seyrr's mood suddenly shifted into something far more serious. "Have we received any more... Dangerous artifacts?" she asked, being cautious not to name them out loud, as if some sort of curse would afflict them both from the mere mentioning of the words.

"No," Senna replied, her smile growing slightly. "I simply spent some more time analyzing those we already had. Funny that things so crucial to our understanding are kept hidden away from the students. Many of the masters would outright deny the existence of them if they didn't know better. And there is yet so much we can learn from them."

Again, Seyrr's mood shifted to concern. She was no longer speaking as a Jedi, but merely as a friend. "Master Vucora, I-I'm not sure if you should be continuing your study of such... Objects. Master Skywalker has said time and time again that they are too dangerous to be trusted in the hands of anyone, even his own."

"I am aware of Skywalker's beliefs," Senna replied with the slightest hints of poison among her words. She took a moment to watch the holocron again before holding it up to her face, letting its faint blue glow flow into the shadows under her hood. As if the conversation before had never happened, she began to think out loud, "The Sith were creating holocrons thousands of years before the Jedi ever learned how. Did you know that? They knew the secrets long before we could even have hoped to. Such a fascinating fact that gives an entire world's worth of insight, but we are expected to simply turn our backs and act like such information never existed? No, that is not the job of a historian."

Seyrr appeared to take in the words very carefully, as if undecided on how to respond. Finally, she simply took a step back and slowly said, "Just don't lose yourself in this research." Senna didn't respond, and after a moment of awkward silence, Seyrr turned toward the door and quickly made her way out into the hall, leaving the Miraluka alone with her thoughts again.

A small pang of regret crossed over her as she wished she would have said more to her friend, but it passed soon enough. She stared into the holocron for another long time before gently replacing it on her desk and wandering back to the viewport above the archives.

Amara couldn’t keep her eyes still as she followed Nik through the Academy together. For the last nine years, she’d been stuck on a lifeless gray husk of a world, where only the extremely unfortunate and unlucky had a chance to see the planet’s surface. She’d almost grown used to the dim walkways and the artificial glare of lights around cantinas, shops, and apartments. Nar Shaddaa had been a world of perpetual night, but Dantooine…Dantooine seemed to leapt out at her like some children’s holotoon. It was beautiful, and even as she thought the word she realized that it couldn’t fully describe the planet’s majesty. The hallways appeared to have been carved by artists, with intricate, yet vague designs running across the walls and surrounding every doorway. It was all designed to put visitors at ease and allow them to relax. It was already working.

As she walked through the artistic hallways, Amara realized with a flash of embarrassment that she couldn’t have looked more out of place. Her overalls and jacket seemed to be mocked by the pristine robes of all the Jedi who passed them, although none of them sneered or even did a double take. Amara walked for a few minutes, taking in the Academy and its tranquility, before stopping in a large atrium and realizing that she was lost.

Don’t wander too far. Nik had told her. Amara’s cheeks blushed. I’ll never hear the end of this, she thought as she looked around for someone to ask for direction. What a frakking great thing to do before your job interview…

A small woman walked in through the far doors. She was in her thirties and dressed in a light blue robe with the hood up over her face, concealing her features. Amara sighed in relief and started towards her, waving. “Excuse me, could you tell me where–” The woman turned to look at her, allowing Amara to see her face. Thick black hair fell down over her eyes, and Amara wondered how she could see. She wouldn’t have stood out in a crowd. Amara slowed to a halt a couple of meters away from her and half-waved. “Hello.”

No answer. The seconds dragged by awkwardly, and Amara cleared her throat and tried again. “I’m new here, and I was hoping you could help me. Can you tell me where I can find Master…” she trailed off as she tried to remember the name of the Jedi Nik said he was meeting. “…Tyris? Yeah, I think it’s Tyris.” The Jedi reached up and lowered her hood, and Amara’s eyes widened slightly. She took an involuntary half–step back.

The woman’s hair fell away from her forehead, revealing a band of white cloth that covered her eyes. No, wait–she didn’t have any eyes. There were no bulges behind the cloth, just depressions. She’s a Miraluka, Amara thought. The Miraluka were a near-Human race that had colonies all over the galaxy, but they were reclusive and aloof. She’d only seen one before, and that had been years ago, on Corellia. Somehow, the entire race was able to see without eyes, and so they only had vestigial eye sockets covered in skin. The one she’d met on Corellia had been…well, he’d been downright creepy, probing her with a gaze that came from nowhere.

Even now, as the Miraluka woman stared at her, she could feel…something in her head, like light fingers turning the pages of her mind. She shifted uneasily as the silence stretched on. Finally, the Jedi spoke.

“I am Master Vucora.”

There wasn't even so much as a rustle from the surrounding grass that would threaten to give away his presence as he crept forward. Having deposited his cloak long ago so that the loose cloth would sweep along the grass, his approach was as silent as it could be. Neither of the gray forms that were dead ahead seemed to notice, their heads remaining drooped as they fed on the very grass that he was using for cover. Suppressing a grin that one would've seen during his missions as a predatory one, he made another silent step, and another, moving through the grass as a gentle breeze produced by the winds of this land.

Yet his presence must've been hinted to nonetheless. One of the gray forms halted it's usual motion of feeding, causing him to halt as well. Crouching just a bit lower, as if trying to sink into the ground, he didn't move a muscle as the two-trunked head of a young thune raised and seemed to scan the area, as if trying to find what may've distracted it from it's meal. Loken Tibris, Jedi Master, could've used the Force to calm the creature's worry, to have it focus back on the edible grass in front of it, but he was resistant against the option. There would be no real fun if he added the Force to his prowling; no real test at all. For this he was relying on his own skills that he had developed and honed long before the introduction of such a power was brought into his life and his duties. Besides, if the young one seemed to have such advanced survival instincts that allowed it to detect danger when it was approaching, who was he to try and suppress them?

Seeming to fail at finding anything that might classify as danger, the thune dipped it's head back towards the grass where it resumed it's meal, and thus it was a sign for him to continue. Raising himself back to his original position, a small tug at the back of his head hinted to grass that had managed to snag at his shoulder-length brown hair that was tied back in a tail. A slight shake of his head fixed that and he moved on.

The thune, a little too far away from the rest of it's herd, didn't seem to detect him a second time, not until the Jedi was practically right in front of it. The thune raised it's head so that it's eyes could track the now visible Loken but showed more curiosity then alarm; a natural reaction to a recently born animal that had yet to see and understand all that the world had to offer. Besides, compared to Loken the thune was a giant. Fully grown ones were as large as small shuttles and this one, despite being much smaller, could easily stomp the Master into the ground if it wanted to. A smile, no predatory aspects in this one at all, came to his face before he slowly lifted a hand and placed it gently upon one of it's trunks.

"Hello," Loken spoke soothingly to the animal, his hand rubbing against the hard hide that made up the animal's skin. The thune made no motion to pull away or - thankfully - crush him and after a moment the animal dipped it's head back down and took in another mouthful of the grass directly in front of the crouched Jedi. Loken remained where he was, giving the thune another pat here and there and even pulling some grass from the ground and offering it to the animal which it accepted.

Peaceful, non-aggressive animals these thunes. Perfect for this time. Where the landscape wouldn't be burned down, thunes and other innocent wildlife being caught in the crossfire, homes destroyed, families slaughtered. Just as it was before the Unification. Loken would know - he had been a participant of it after all.

As the thune continued to munch on the grasses, Master Tibris looked up towards the sky, the sun of Dantooine burning brightly, it's rays not being blocked by smoke and ash, allowing it to bring light down upon the landscape that hadn't been trampled, burned, or outright bombed. And upon this landscape, life continued to prosper rather then be extinguished. This was the kind of peace that had felt so alien to the ex-soldier, a peace that he had come to appreciate. To protect. That was his duty as a Jedi.

"Eat well, young one," Loken spoke again, his green eyes drifting back to the young thune. "For now and for the years to come."

Giving it another pat on it's trunks, the Jedi Master slunk back into the grasses, his destination being the tree which he had hung his cloak upon one of it's branches. While he liked enjoying what these peaceful times had to offer, there were duties that demanded his attention for him to complete and make sure that these times would last all that much longer. He did not wish to see innocents - from animals to people - be caught in the flames again...at least not while he still lived. That he wished to leave behind as a part of a legacy he helped forge for both the Order and the galaxy. So, upon reaching the tree, Loken retrieved the cloak and threw it back over his shoulders, already planning on returning to the Jedi Temple located not too far from here.

However, he allowed himself to have a look over a shoulder, finding the young thune returning back to it's herd as it moved out. Mimicking the action, Loken moved out back to the temple.

When the girl didn't immediately respond, Senna quickly added, "And I assume you have an adequate reason for stumbling through my archives unattended?"

She looked harmless enough, but her lack of Force Sensitivity struck Senna as an odd point. Such people were rarely seen mulling around the academy, much less wandering about inside. It was a dangerous situation to have a stranger explore the academy grounds, especially given the proximity to the Jedi Archives. Although there likely wasn't much mischief any one person could uncover, Senna didn't want to be any less suspicious. Problems could arise from any facet, even— No, Especially those that are entirely unexpected.

Whatever the girl's excuse was, Senna would get to the bottom of the matter. She couldn't hide from a Jedi Master's gaze.

The conversation had just begun, and Amara was already slightly intimidated. She was a few centimeters taller than Vucora, but somehow the Jedi Master seemed to look down at her...if such a phrase could be applied to someone with no eyes. The strange sensation in her head was gone, but Amara could still feel Vucora's stare...which was odd, again, because she didn't have any eyes. And yet Amara had the distinct feeling she was being held under intense scrutiny.

She cleared her throat and nervously brushed a strand of blue hair out of her face. "I, uh...I'm Amara. Amara Selanno. Jedi Starskimmer brought me here to work as a mechanic." When Vucora did not reply, she continued. "He was talking with Master Tyris, so I decided to take a look around." Vucora's brow furrowed, and Amara quickly added, "I hope I haven't broken any rules or anything...Master Vucora." Great way to start off a new job, she thought to herself furiously. Piss off the management, why don't you?

Koshina walked down the hallways, she was asked to see Master Vucora. She tried to forget the horrible images from her mind. They were the problem of the Council now. There was nothing she could do unless they called her. She felt wary and cooped up in the Temple, she wanted to leave on a mission and see the rest of the Galaxy. On her own this time.

On my own… She sank her head in remorse for her long dead Master.

***
Nine years ago…
***

Daeshar’cor stood in front of Koshina, whom was blindfolded and couldn’t see, trying to wield a lightsaber for the first time. The blue plasma blade shifted and swayed as she angled it ever so slightly, trying to anticipate an attack from her Master. Daeshar’cor moved left and right as she spoke. “You are Echani,” she said, teasing Koshina by tapping her on the shoulder, and quickly pulling away as Koshina shot her attention, and her lightsaber, in that direction. Her Master laughed at Koshina’s discomfort. “You are suppose to be one of the Galaxy’s finest close quarters specialist. You, being able to feel and sense the Force, sets you out from the rest.” Continuing to tease her, she gave her a lesson, “Dig deep within yourself, combine your will to use the Force, and your instincts as an Echani… To strike my blade…” Koshina concentrated, sweat dripped between her hand and her surprisingly heavy lightsaber. She felt her Masters blade coming towards her. She moved, and as her Master instructed, she struck her blade. The kinetic energy from the blades hitting were enough to make her drop her light saber. She took off the blindfold and looked at her feet. A disengaged lightsaber laid there at her feet. “Master,” She said as she sunk to her knees, “I failed.” Daeshar’cor reached with the Force, picked up the lightsaber and placed it in Koshina’s lap and said, “You’ve just begun to learn to wield a lightsaber, young one.”

“You will learn, very soon. You just have to have patience…”

***

Patience… she remembered, Daeshar’cor told me that throughout my training. A mission will come to pass. She continued her way to the library, where she would see Master Vucora. She entered a doorway with intricate carvings on it’s crown. She saw Vucora, speaking to… You know? I’ve never seen her before.

“Master Vucora,” She said as she approached, “I hope I am not interrupting anything.”

“No,” She replied, “I’m just getting to know Amara here.”

"No," Senna replied, scanning the girl as thoroughly as she could. Once she was satisfied with her deduction, she quickly added, "Not yet, that is."

Before their conversation could continue any further, however, Koshina approached and asked if she was interrupting. "No, I'm just getting to know Amara here," she answered in a tone that made her suspicions obvious. Realizing that she was likely being rather intimidating again, she tried to ease off her tone as she turned to Koshina and asked, "What brings you here, Koshina? Do you require my assistance?"

Senna hummed her acknowledgment and gave a nod of her head. Without much of a pause, she replied, "While I have no immediate tasks that require your hand, the subject of your arrival intrigues me."

She tilted her head to the side slightly. "What precisely did Master Tyris send you to me for?" she asked, struggling to remember if perhaps she had already heard about a problem. Try as she might, the only thing she could recall was a report she had received earlier from Master Tyris, though she never did pull herself away from the rest of her work long enough to actually read it.

Nik almost missed the doorway in his hurry to find Amara. He slowed to a halt and packpedaled, glancing inside the expansive room as he did. His bones froze as he saw Amara, standing by Master Vucora as the latter spoke with Jedi...Koshina, Nik believed it was. This won't end well. Gathering his nerves, he strode into the archives as if it had been his destination the entire time. "Ah, Miss Selanno," he said, trying to keep the nervousness he felt out of his voice and Force aura. "There you are. You appear to be lost." Amara looked up as he approached, and he could see a bit of the anxious tension in her face evaporate as he approached. "I, uh, I was just having a look around and I got sidetracked, Jedi Starskimmer. Thanks for your concern."

Nik nodded and stopped a few meters away from the trio, bowing to Vucora. "Hello, Master Vucora."

"Master Tyris sent me here to recieve your knowledge of Visions," She replied, "Be it from memory or from one of the books here in the library."
At that moment, Nik Starskimmer entered the room. "Ah, Miss Selanno," he said, "There you are. You appear to be lost." Senna parted her lips to reply to Koshina's remark, but the moment before she could get any words out, another Jedi found his way into the room. Nik Starskimmer entered and began to tend to his lost escort. After trading some brief words, he turned to Senna and greeted her with a slight bow.

With her sightless gaze, she watched him for a moment, then simply responded with, "Hello, Starskimmer." She continued to stare through him for some time, waiting for him to give any more of an explanation or for him to just shuffle away with the other girl in tow.

It was hard not to fidget under Master Vucora's stare, but Nik managed to remain still. "I was just looking for Miss Selanno," he explained, not waiting for a question that wasn't going to come. "I...Master Tyris and I were hoping to speak to you about hiring her as a temple mechanic. She's very good at what she does-"

"And what is that exactly?" Vucora broke in, her tone inquisitive.

Nik started slightly at the sudden interruption. "She is an expert at constructing and repairing droids, especially astromechs. She also has considerable experience in starship-"

"She has a name," Amara said pointedly from beside him. Nik was about to apologize when Vucora whipped her head around to look at the Corellian woman. "You will speak when you are spoken to, girl. Now be silent." Amara's mouth opened slightly, then closed into a tight-lipped grimace. Nik winced inside as Vucora turned back to him. "Continue."

Nik cleared his throat. "As I was saying, Am-Miss Selanno also has considerable expertise in starship repairs. She'd be invaluable to the hangar crews." Where I can keep an eye on her, Nik added to himself. The vision flashed in his sight for a split second, overlapping Vucora and Amara. He squeezed his eyes shut, lifting his hand on the pretense of rubbing something out of his eyes. When he opened them again the horrible sight of Amara lying burned on the boulder had vanished.

Master Vucora, however, had surely sensed it.

Fortunately, she chose to ignore his spontaneous distress, although he was sure she would interrogate him about it later. For now he decided to press onward. "Master Tyris said he would also speak with you later about Miss Selanno's possible occupation here. We were about to see you when she wandered off," he ended, giving her a subtle nod towards the door. "If you don't mind, we'll return with Master Tyris and may continue this discussion."

Nik held his breath, wondering in Vucora would object and order them to stay.

For a long time, Senna simply stared into Nik as deeply as she could. After what surely would have felt like an eternity to Nik, she raised her head and tilted it slightly to the side while her hands found their way behind her back and clasped together. "Very well," she stated with a nearly invisible smile upon her lips.

"If she is truly as invaluable as you believe her to be, then I hope to see her talents put to good use within our walls. We could use more hands to act as caretakers in the hangar." She paused again, letting her head sink down a little before turning it toward Amara herself and giving her another look up and down. Still speaking to Nik, she continued, "See Master Tyris to finalize the details, but know that you have my support in the matter."

Once the matter was settled, she turned back to the patiently waiting Koshina and attempted to pick up their lost conversation. "Now, Koshina, you spoke of visions?"

Nik clamped down on the sigh of relief that threatened to escape from his mouth. That was much easier than I thought it would be. A thought struck him, and his spine grew cold. Much too easy. Placing a guiding hand on Amara's back, he gently steered her towards the exit. "Thank you, Master. I will see to it." Together they hurried out of the archives as Vucora turned to speak with one of the other Jedi. Once they were well on their way to Master Tyris' quarters, Nik lowered his hand and stopped. Amara gave him a quizzical look. "Who in the Nine Hells was that?" she asked.

Nik leaned against the wal in a very un-Jedi-like manner. "That," he answered, his tone that of one who was ordering a meal at a cheap restauraunt, "was Master Senna Vucora, archivist and historian." As an aside, he added, "Oh, and she's also the master of the Academy." Amara stifled a small choked gasp. "So I just...?"

"While it wasn't the way I had hoped you would meet," Nik said as they resumed walking through the hallways, "It was better than I had expected. You handled yourself well enough." Amara gave him a funny look, and he quickly added, "I mean, uh, that is to say-"

She laughed. "Are all Jedi this socially awkward?" There was really nothing Nik could do but blush slightly and shake his head. "I wish. That's just me."

They reached Master Tyris' quarters and paused outside. "Well, thanks for rescuing me." Amara joked. "I guess all those stories about Jedi are true."

Nik blinked. "Stories? What stories?"

She cocked an eyebrow at him. "Y'know, all the ones about knights in shining armor and damsels...though I guess it'd be shining swords, in your case." They laughed.

Nik glanced at the door and cleared his throat. "Well, I'll see you tomorrow, Miss Selanno." Amara gave him another funny look. "So...where do I go now?" He blushed again. Stupid. uh... "Oh, right. Um, the visitor's quarters are down the hall and to the left," he said, pointing. "Just keep going until you find one that's unoccupied and call the register when you go inside. They'll mark it as your quarters." She nodded, and there was a thick silence between the two of them for several moments. Nik nodded and turned to open Tyris' door when Amara placed a hand on his arm. "Nik, I...thanks. For everything."

Her touch sent a tingle up his arm, and he tried not to blush a third time. "It's a Jedi's duty to help those in need." Idiot. Stop quoting platitudes and codes. Thankfully, his canned response didn't discourage her. "No, really. You saved me and my brother's lives on Corellia." She flashed him a half-smile. "Without you...I wouldn't be here. I mean, for the first time in a long I have a job, a home..." Amara trailed off. "Anyway, thanks." Abruptly, she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek before turning and walked down the hall. He stood there, stunned and thrilled at the same time, until she turned the corner and took one last look at him before leaving. Nik reached and touched the spot where Amara'd kissed him. For a moment, adrenaline rushed through him, and he managed a crooked grin.

Then the vision flashed in front of his eyes, and he jerked back into the door.

When the images faded, he realized he was panting hard. An apprentice passed him and gave him a curious glance, but knew better than to say anything. Nik looked back at the corner where Amara had left, and his mouth set in a firm line.

I will find a way to save you, Amara Selanno. I promise you.

"It can be rather difficult to analyze visions without any details," Senna prodded after hearing Koshina's evasive reply. She pondered how she could handle the situation, since it was obvious that she was not feeling ready to divulge everything she had seen. The reasons behind her hesitation remained clouded, however.

"There are many texts here in the archives that I'm sure you could explore, though whether or not you receive any of the answers you are truly seeking is another matter."

"Thank you, Master Vucora. I will look in the library for the answers I seek..."

Later...

Koshina returned to her quarters disappointed, nothing in the library, except for brief references, held any knowledge on visions. She decided to meditate, to mark it was just a trick of the mind.

Okay... That sucked....
Does anyone have anything for Koshina to do?
