Bilbringi

The bridge rocked gently as the docking arms detached and the giant ion engines slowly began accelerating, moving the cruiser out of the drydock in which it had been berthed for several months. The upper part of the armoured superstructure was bathed in the light from Bilbringi's sun, not only highlighting the beautiful and balanced curves of the Mon Cal design but also casting awesome shadows from the arrays of Turbolasers, reminding everyone that this was a vessel of war, and a rather large on at that.

As Vice Admiral Karel Brand stood observing this at the bridge viewport he exhaled in relief. This concluded perhaps the most excruciating six months of his life; first he had spent almost four months quarrelling with High Command and the politicians over funding a refit of the Renown and several other of his warships and then more than two months lounging around while waiting for the refits to be finished. There hadn't even been much paperwork to do in those idle months!

The Renown, a Mon Calamari Battlecruiser stretching a bit more than two miles, had been commissioned at the height of the war against Grand Admiral Zend's resurgent forces and had served as the then-recently-promoted Vice Admiral Brand's flagship in a long series of engagements up and down the Hydian Way. After Zend's disappearance and the peace treaty Brand had successfully managed to keep most of his fleet as an anti-piracy force, the New Republic Expeditionary Battle Group, operating mostly in and around Hutt Space, where crime was running rampant.
But during the Unification a decade later and another ten years of relative galactic peace the brass had slowly been taking away more and more of his ships, to the point where his command now only counted 8 capital ships and 30 support ships - to cover an area of space larger than the Core and Colonies put together! But he still had plenty of fighters, since they were all the rage in this so-called new paradigm of peace.

6 of those 8 capital ships had been with Brand since the time of the war, and the Renown itself was older than a good portion of its crew. After at least 20 years of diligent service without anything but minor repairs Brand had thought his warships had needed a refit, but only after a massive storm of written requests and applications and using every single remotely influential contact Brand had was the funding granted. Bilbringi had been the only yard with enough idle docks to accommodate the entire force, and so the New Republic Expeditionary Battle Group and its worn-out ships had checked in for repairs and refits.

And now they were finally finished! As the Renown moved clear of the drydock it was hailed by the heavy cruiser Indomitable, its long time escort through both war and peace.
"Looking good, Renown. Nice and shiny!" said Commander Tobbra, chief of the Indomitable.
Brand smiled and pressed the holocom, "well, I think they forgot to paint over quite a big spot on your bow, Indomitable!"

He liked serving the navy. And as long as he had some fight left in him, he would defend the New Republic from not only external enemies but also from itself and the creeping pacifism currently spreading through the leadership.

Point Bantha

The 6 remaining capital ships and 22 support ships of the New Republic Expeditionary Battle Group hovered in deep space, mourning their losses and examining the damages sustained during the rout that was the Battle of Bilbringi. Captains Netback and Halle and their entire crews had been blown to bits, as had two thirds of the battle group's bombers and half its fighters.

Staring intensely at the various holorecordings from the battle, Brand was reminded again and again of his failures. But he was no soft man, he could take a few setbacks, especially when it was obvious Brand's tactics had only failed because of some devious new technologies brought onto the field by the Z-Imps, including some peculiar beam weaponry. This had to get back to Coruscant ASAP, but first they would wait for the remains of the Fourth Fleet.

Granted, whether they got out or not was an open question, but Brand was willing to give them some more time. That meant he had more time going through all the recordings, and selecting some which would be of interest to the intelligence service. They would probably pick it all apart and analyse it on every level, that was their job.
What Brand could conclude that was that what little success the NR forces had had came from concentrating firepower. These Zend forces were nowhere near invincible, especially against a wall of turbolaser fire.

By occupying himself with these things, Brand was procrastinating having to think about the fact that a massive new enemy armada was loose in the Galaxy, and that the New Republic was going into the fight of their lives. And what the Imperials would do in the face of the return of their old supreme commander was an open question.

Suddenly sensors registered a large emission of Cronau radiation and in came the battered remains of Commodore Gaains' force.

Point Bantha

A loud tone cut mercilessly demanded Brand's attention, and he raised his head, immediately feeling in his neck the painful signs of having fallen asleep on his chair, his head having rested on the holoprojector. Waking up in the middle of a virtual battlefield was quite an experience. He must have dozed off while studying the battle.

He then pressed his comm button, as the tone annoying demanded.
"Brand here," he answered briskly.
The voice was that of Captain Wellsprun, "sir, we've been beeping you for two minutes, what kept you? Anyway, Commodore Gaains has finally arrived.
"Splendid, I'll be on the bridge shortly."

The commander's quarters were not far from the bridge, but as he walked the corridors Brand began organising the events of the immediate past in his still-dizzy mind.
The Cronau radiation had come from the Heroes of Tatooine, the escort frigate for Gaain's command ship the Aggressive Negotiator, of which there was no sign. They had made contact and exchanged information and were making ready for going to Coruscant, after all Brand had to inform the New Republic leadership fully of this catastrophe. It was only his sense of respect for the men under his command that had kept him from taking a shuttle there. No one was left behind, especially not with a Zend Imperial armada squatting a shipyard only six parsecs away.

For six hours Brand had been touring the other ships and checking up on their states of repair. Some of them had been hit hard, but the Star Destroyer Rejuvenator, the Bothan Assault Cruiser Courageous and the fleet carrier Intrepid were virtually unharmed, as were a large amount of the smaller ships. Fortunately there were few engine damages. But the pilot rosters were disturbingly empty. This was where a change in New Republic tactics was most imperative, and as soon as he had returned to the Renown he had resumed studying the battle records, and dozed off over the projection. Looking at his chrono, he realised he had slept for three hours.

As he entered the bridge Captain Wellsprun turned to face him, a weak smile on his face, "a nice little nap, sir?" He asked.
"Yes, I needed that. Have you gotten some sleep? It's been three shifts since we came here."
"Umm, no, sir," answered the captain, and Brand could see in his eyes that he was not lying. Wellsprun's dedication and industry were marvellous, and even as the years had gone by he had not slackened the slightest.
But there were limits to everything, "well, I order you to get at least five hours of sleep right away. No arguing."
And the captain did not argue.

Brand instructed the comm officer to open a channel to the Aggressive Negotiator the beat-up Bothan Assault Cruiser on which Commodore Gaains carried her flag.
"Vice Admiral Brand here, Negotiator, how are you faring? We are preparing to jump to Coruscant since we need to spread word to High Command as quickly as possible, but can you make it there, or at least to Borleias?"

Brand looked at the holoimage of Tira Gaains, "you read my mind, Commdore. I have already sent sparse notifications to Coruscant, but I wanted to wait with a full report before I got the complete picture. I am sure you have studied the recordings as I have, and I have readied a shuttle for departure. If you wish, I could come by and pick you up before jumping to Coruscant. The rest of the fleet will be going to Nabatu's orbital stations for repair, I've already notified the yard authorities of our arrival."

Two were better than one when going up against the red tape after all.

By the way, Nabatu is a rocky world, the tenth planet of the Coruscant system. And they'll need damn good telescopes to see that from Coruscant itself :P

Mon Cal Battlecruiser Renown is now at the Corsucant system, near the planet of Nabatu.
