The man stumbled out of the shuttle and onto the landing platform, squinting his eyes against the morning sun.

He was a large, heavyset figure with ragged, shoulder-length black hair and dull gray eyes. His arms were bound behind him with a straight jacket, with strained against his apparent bulk. Behind him, a pair of guards wearing GA police uniforms hopped out of the shuttle's open bay and trained weapons on the captive. "Move it, scumbag." They grabbed his bound wrists and marched him forward as the shuttle lifted off and began circling the top of the building, heading towards the storage hangar. Ahead of the prisoner, four more officers walked out onto the landing pad with stun rifles, also trained on the man. One of them waved to the officer on the prisoner's left. "Another one from Greer's gang? Good, bring him in to the holding-"

For his trouble, he recieved a blaster bolt to the thigh.

The two guards behind the prisoner dropped to one knee and hosed the other officers with a hail of blaster fire, dropping them with as many as six or seven bolts each. Finally, only the first officer remained, bleeding profusely from his wound. He watched in pain-clouded confusion as the two guards uncuffed the prisoner and handed him a blaster. The officer tried to crawl backwards with his good leg, but only managed to gasp in pain as his wound scraped on the duracrete walkway. The prisoner unzipped his straight jacket, revealing that his bulk came not from muscle or fat, but from a set of body armor. One guard handed him a distinctive helmet with a T-shaped visor. He slipped it on, completing his transformation, and slowly walked over to the officer.

Xerros Orade pumped a single bolt into the man's chest. "Move it," he barked at the two mercenaries. Behind him, he heard a loud explosion from the storage hangar as their droid-piloted shuttle detonated, along with its cargo of explosives. The entire building shook, and the blast threw pieces of the hangar and its ships into the air before hurtling down beneath the clouds to the streets below. As debris continued to rain down, a pair of airspeeders pulled up to the landing pad, disgorging two more armored figures and over a dozen armed men and women, all sporting tattoos or distinctive scars. Xerros walked up to the door and placed a gob of plastic explosive between the seam before backing up.

"Fire in the hole."

The doors blew off their tracks, and the mercenaries stormed into the building, spraying blaster fire.

Xerros fired a bolt into the forehead of the last security officer, ending the firefight minutes after it had begun. The hired mercenaries were securing the fallen officer's weapons and stacking the bodies behind blaster-scorched desks while his elite-the two Mandalorians he'd brought with him-moved to the security office's turbolift. One of them, a woman in gray armor, knelt at the turbolift controls and attached a datapad to the panel, tapping commands into the interface. A moment later the doors pinged and opened, and Xerros' commandos filed in.

Xerros turned to the leader of the mercenaries. "Guard the entrance," he ordered. "We'll lock down the turbolift behind us; use the comlink when you're ready for extraction." The merc commander, a dark-skinned human woman, nodded and tapped her wrist com. "Frequency seven?"

"Right."

Xerros stepped into the turbolift just as the mercs began upending tables and setting up barricades.

Once they were inside the lift and it had begun its ascent, Xerros' commandos began their preparations. Fargut, a huge man in blue armor, clipped his blaster rifle to his waist and hefted a large six-barreled rotary blaster, spinning up the gun to ensure it would fire on a moment's notice. Lyra, the woman who had unlocked the doors, stowed her datapad and drew a sleek longblaster. Xerros checked the vibroblades in his gauntlets, unsheathing and sheathing them, before moving onto his blaster pistols. Blocky and thick KDY models, both were low on charge from the firefight in the lobby. He ejected the power cells and slapped new ones into place.

Then, for six seconds there was silence as the lift continued to rise rapidly. Just before it reached the top floor, Xerros knelt and leaned forward slightly, his warriors following his lead. The doors opened, revealing a penthouse that had been converted into an office. Several armed guards had taken up positions behind overturned desks and had blaster rifles trained on the trio. A voice on the other side called out "Hold it right-"

Xerros tapped a button on his gauntlet, launching the small missile mounted on top of his jetpack. There was a loud whoosh of expelled exhaust-no, three such noises-and then the room beyond was filled with explosions and screams.

Xerros stood and began firing indiscriminantly, his blasters dropping each security officer he could see. Fargut's rotary blaster sprayed the room, while Lyra's rifle quickly and efficiently picked off the wounded and dying. A few return shots panged off their armor, but the hardened beskar plates shrugged the bolts off like rocks. After a few seconds, the massacre was over. The three Mandalorians stepped forward, broken glass crunching underneath their armored boots as they picked their way through the carnage. One man, wearing a blood-stained uniform that marked him as the deputy chief of security, reached up suddenly from where he'd been felled by a smattering of shots from the rotary blaster. "Why...?" he rasped, trailing off to cough up blood.

Xerros knelt beside the man, his head cocked as he considered the man's question. There were so many reasons, of course; so many needs, so few ways to fulfill them, so few paths that led to the revenge that made up every fiber of his being. In the end, Xerros shrugged. "Because it has to be done."

The deputy gave him a pained look of confusion before his eyes rolled back into his head. A short rattle emerged from his mouth, and his chest ceased its labored movements.

Xerros stood and glanced over to Lyra, who was already at work on the safe at the far end of the room. Fargut was busy leaving his 'gifts': a series of high-explosive charges that would annihilate the entire floor and a good portion of the surrounding building.

Xerros moved to the window that covered the length of the back wall. The transparisteel had shattered in the explosions, and the morning breeze whipped his cloak behind him as he glanced down a hundred stories or so, where he could see a perimeter of security speeders. He magnified the image on his HUD and saw a group of soldiers preparing to storm the building, where they would run into the mercenaries Xerros had left behind. The mercs would be overwhelmed, of course. But they would buy the Mandalorians the time they needed to accomplish their goals.

The officers charged forward, holding blaster-resistant riot shields out in front of them as they advanced. Blaster bolts streaked out from the lobby to strike the shields, occasionally scoring a lucky shot and glancing off an officer's body armor. The response was a volley of blaster fire that elicited a series of screams from the inside of the lobby, and the comlink clipped to Xerros' waist began beeping urgently. He glanced down at it for a moment, then unclipped it and tossed it out into the open air where it plummeted to the ground below.

Lyra moved to stand next to him and held up her datapad. "The files were there. Encrypted, but nothing I can't handle once we're out of here."

Fargut also returned from his work. "Charges are set. Send a pulse on channel D and the building gets a new skylight."

Xerros moved and tapped a command into his wrist com. His jetpack began to hum. "Good. Let's move out."

He stepped into empty space and fell.

Lyra and Fargut soon appeared on either sides of him, falling feet-first. All three of them oriented themselves so that their plunge became head-first, and a rangefinder activated in Xerros' HUD. Two hundred meters...one hundred fifty meters...seventy-five meters...

When the rangefinder reached fifty meters, Xerros fired his jetpack. Twin tongues of flame shot out from the thrusters, and he pulled up steadily, as to not invite a blackout. Lyra and Fargut stayed on either side of him, and they passed above the idling security speeders with a dozen meters to spare. He had a brief glimpse of one of the drivers craning his neck to look up at them before they soared past. When they were a hundred meters away, Xerros activated his rear-view camera and activated the charges.

The top floor of the Denon GAPDHQ tower erupted in a blaze of fire and twisted metal. The sturdier chunks of durasteel were flung into the air, while the smaller sections were blasted apart into shrapnel that fell to the ground below. One large piece of debris crushed the back end of a security speeder, pinning it in place. The rest of the vehicles rose up on repulsorlifts and gave pursuit to the three Mandalorians.

Xerros watched, unconcerned, as they gained on them. The lead speeder activated a loudspeaker, and the pilot demanded that they land and surrender their weapons. Xerros ignored him and glanced at a small timer that was ticking down in the corner of his HUD. Ten seconds.

They continued to speed along the airways, weaving through traffic and forcing the pursuing airspeeders to duck and dodge along with them. One of them collided with a garbage hauler, and both vehicles went down in flames.

Five seconds.

The speeders closed to within ten meters, and the officers on board opened fire. One bolt glanced off of Fargut's shoulder plate; he responded by rolling onto his back and firing his blaster rifle into the officer's vehicle. The shot missed, but it discouraged the rest from closing.

Zero seconds.

Almost exactly on schedule, a mid-sized bulk freighter dipped down from a perpendicular lane and moved ahead of them, its repulsorlifts scattering traffic below. The bay doors on its aft end opened, and it slowed to allow the three Mandalorians to catch up with it. Xerros leaned back and set his feet on the cargo ramp, reached out to help Lyra up. Fargut continued to return fire, even as the ramp began to close and the freighter made for orbit.

Xerros pulled his helmet off and shook his matted black hair, sending drops of sweat flying. Lyra also removed her bucket and tossed him a quick grin. "I'll be damned. Not a hitch."

Fargut left his helmet on and shouldered his rifle and rotary blaster. "Don't count your credits yet. We still have to break orbit."

From a walkway above the hold, a voice called out, "As long as your contacts come through, the exit lane should be cleared." A tan-colored Twi'lek male trodded down the steps into the hold. "Assuming that holds up, we'll make the jump in five." The captain stopped in front of Xerros and extended a hand. "Pleasure doing business with you."

"Likewise." Rather than accept the offered hand, Xerros drew his blaster. The Twi'lek had just enough time for the shock to register on his face before the bolt from the weapon struck him dead. Without a word, Lyra made her way up the catwalk to the cockpit. Fargut patted down the captain and retrieved the small bag of credit chips he'd been paid with and left Xerros alone with the body. He contemplated the man's expression for a moment. Had he suspected? No, the look on his face, frozen for all eternity, made that obvious.

Xerros holstered his pistol and reached down to close the captain's eyes, still staring at him accusingly.
