Summarized Biography: John Kiles was born to Anaxi Senator Lara Meere and Republic Captain Torren Habbon a year before the outbreak of hostilities known as the Clone Wars. For the first few years of his life, he saw very little of his father, who was based aboard a Republic cruiser in the Outer Rim, or his mother, who spent most of her time on Coruscant. John was raised mostly by his grandparents, a pair of mid-level nobles on Anaxes, who took care of him throughout the war. However, in the third year of the war John’s mother was killed during the Battle of Coruscant by strafing droid starfighters, and his father signed on to follow Obi-Wan Kenobi to capture General Grievous, the being responsible for the attack. Torren was killed when a damaged starfighter slammed into the bridge of his cruiser above the surface of Utapau. As a result, John’s grandparents encouraged him to join the newly-christened Imperial Navy even from an early age.

The first step for John was flight school. After graduating near the top of his class at his civilian school, John sent in an application to the Imperial Academy on the planet and was accepted. As luck would have it, his flight instructor, Derek Brand, turned out to be an old friend of Torren’s and took the young Kiles in under his wing–and when Kiles graduated two years later, took him to be his wingman when the first signs of rebellion appeared. Derek and John were shipped out with the new squadron to an Outer Rim post aboard the Devastator. They served aboard the ship for a few month before transferring to another Star Destroyer. Shortly after, Devastator was picked by Lord Vader as his personal flagship, and Derek informed John that he was secretly relieved. By then, rumors of Vader’s strange powers and temper had had time to circulate throughout the Imperial Fleet.

Derek and John flew a total of three years in the cockpits. John reached ace by the time he was transferred out of Starfighter Command as all surviving TIE fighter pilots were. Derek was awarded a commendation for bravery after shooting down three Rebel fighters during a raid on a convoy. He too, was transferred out of the SC and onto the bridge of a capital ship. Before they split up, Derek told John his father would have been proud to know him, and that he had been proud to fly alongside him. Two days later, Derek’s shuttle was attacked and destroyed by Rebel fighters en route to his new command. A devastated John was once again transferred, this time to fill the hole his friend and mentor’s death had filled–command of an Imperial Star Destroyer. After six months of officer training on tactics and strategy, Captain John Kiles walked onto the bridge of the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Gauntlet.

Four years after the Battle of Yavin, Captain Kiles had earned a slight reputation for being thorough and precise while rooting out Rebel cells and supply routes in the Outer Rim. The Gauntlet had led three major battles against significant Rebel forces and come out on top each time. Because of the ship’s record, and that of its Captain, Imperial High Command had the ship discreetly transferred to the Endor system, in preparation for the final destruction of the Rebel Alliance. In his private log, John expressed a relief that soon the war would be over and Derek’s spirit could rest in peace knowing that John had avenged his death. During the Battle of Endor, Gauntlet led two other Star Destroyers to engage a pair of Star Cruisers when the Rebel fleet attempted its desperate frontal assault on the blockade. Gauntlet sustained moderate damage when a GR-75 transport loaded with troops careened out of control and crashed into the Star Destroyer’s upper hull. Stormtroopers and Imperial Army troops boarded the ship and captured the crew before the ship was extracted by the tractor beam of a neighboring ship.

When the Death Star was destroyed, Gauntlet followed Chimaera into a retreat, along with the rest of the Imperial Fleet. During the regrouping at Annaj, John discovered that one of the prisoners from the Rebel ship was none other than Derek Brand. When Derek revealed that his death had been staged in order to conceal his defection, John was torn between his duty to the Empire and the history of friendship between the two of them. John entered Derek’s cell alone, presumably to summarily execute him. What happened in the cell will never be known, but when the guard outside heard a blaster discharge he ran inside and found Captain Kiles lying stunned on the ground, and the air vent cover blown off with a blaster bolt. Derek managed to steal a shuttle and jump to hyperspace in the confusion.

Gauntlet served under several commands with John at the helm over the next few years. Thrawn, Pellaeon, and finally Harrsk. The years and defeats aged John and the ship’s crew, eating away at their morale until a certain Admiral Daala united the Imperial Warlords and claimed command over the Empire. Once again, Gauntlet took place in major battles against New Republic forces, including the unqualified victory at Yavin IV. For the next several months the war went moderately well, until Admiral Daala’s death and the refragmentation of the Empire. Gauntlet stayed loyal to Admiral Pellaeon through the turbulent times until the Empire managed to come together again. When the order came for the retaking of Anaxes, Gauntlet and her crew were chosen as part of the attack squadron. John was promoted to Commodore after leading Gauntlet solo into a hole in the defending fleet’s formation, breaking up the core of the group (Though heavily damaging the ship in the process) and allowing the invasion fleet to take the upper hand, thus recapturing Anaxes. For the first time in twelve years, John walked on the surface of his homeworld as a fellow Anaxi, instead of an enemy officer.

However, this would not last long. Despite the apparent successes of the Empire, the war became bloody and deadlocked into a stalemate. When Admiral Zend disappeared along with half the Empire, Gauntlet was ordered to stand down with the rest of the Imperial Navy. Anaxes was once again surrendered to the New Republic. John and his battle group were transferred to the shipyards at Bilbringi as part of the security force. When the Treaty of Unification was signed, Anaxeswas once again open to Imperial citizens, but John had finally realized that his true home was on the bridge of his Star Destroyer.
