His first shots blew apart the stationary Vulture droid, and Nik’s R7 screamed in alarm as he dove the interceptor through the blast cloud. “If you want us to survive the next few minutes,” he said over the droid’s screeching, “then I suggest you be quiet.” He settled onto the tail of another droid and stitched its rear with cannon bolts. R7 fell silent as he looped around the disabled light freighter towards the small cloud of enemy starfighters. “Bring up the tacmap,” he ordered, and a moment later a small hologram appeared on the display in front of him. It showed the friendly (Or at least neutral) freighter settling into a stationary orbit with its attitude thrusters. The larger freighter was remaining a good distance away from the main fight, while the ten remaining Vulture droids aborted their runs on the light freighter and sped towards him at high speed. Ten against one wasn’t great odds, but for a Jedi they weren’t all that uncommon.

The real question mark, Nik knew, was the bulk freighter that served as the droids’ carrier. It was a relatively new Mon Calamari design, with a sweeping egg-shaped hull and slit-like crevices along its sides that were probably the starfighters’ launch bays. For now, he decided keeping his distance would be prudent, as his sensors weren’t capable of picking up any weapons it might be housing. As He brought his fighter around and fired another burst from the laser cannons, the droids answered with a hailstorm of angry red bolts of their own. Nik released two concussion missiles, rolled, and dove underneath the buzzing cloud just as the ordnance exploded. Three of the red designators winked off the display, and the rest were hot on his tail. R7 resumed his wailing as more enemy fire streaked dangerously close, but what shots would have connected Nik avoided easily, thanks to the Force. “Relax, you. We’ll be fine.” The interceptor jerked violently, and an alarm signaled the loss of the rear shields. “Probably.” He redoubled his efforts at evasive maneuvers.

Out of nowhere two streams of laser bolts punctured the cloud of Vulture droids and sent a pair spinning away with missing wings. Nik traced the fire back to the source and saw that the light freighter was back in the fight, and packing some serious heat. A quad laser cannon protruded from its dorsal and ventral surfaces, and they unleashed hell on the droids. Another starfighter exploded, and Nik finally had some breathing room. He tapped a command to disable the thruster on his next concussion missile and launched it out of the bay. It shot out ahead of him initially, then flew behind his viewport as his interceptor sped past it, leading the ignorant swarm of Vultures into the trap. There was a flash of light, and two more droids vanished. Two more, he thought. Cake.

Now that the dogfight was more or less under his control, he decided to see about that bulk freighter. Nik opened a channel and broadcasted in the clear. “This is Jedi Starskimmer to unidentified medium freighter. Recall your starfighters and lower your shields immediately.” He didn’t expect it to work, but what he did expect–and sense coming–was the burst from a pair of turbolaser cannons mounted on the freighter’s spine, which he easily avoided. Have it your way.

Nik reached deep into the Force, as far as he dared without risking backlash, and probed the minds of the freighter’s crew. There were about a dozen different beings of various races and temperaments, but one of them radiated an unmistakable aura of superiority. The captain, most likely. Nik pushed deeper into his mind, feeling for his thoughts. There was a definite feeling of anger and frustration, as well as a sense of anticipation, although that had been dulled somewhat by Nik’s arrival. Obviously there was something aboard the other ship this being wanted–but what?

There would be time to figure that out later. Right now there were two lives at stake aboard the light freighter. Nik poured on the acceleration while placing a thought in the captain’s head. The Jedi is gone. The turbolasers got him. Recall the droids and board the ship. Take what you want. At first the captain was confused, but then the droids broke from their pursuit of Nik and headed towards the bulk freighter. The slits widened until there was ample room for the droids to dock, and Nik’s sensors detected that the shields had been lowered as well.

He locked onto both of the droids and fired his remaining concussion missiles.

At a distance of less than a thousand kilometers, the projectiles closed in the space of a second. Both droids disappeared in a flash of fire, and the rest of the missiles detonated in the freighter’s hold, gutting the engine compartment and crippling it. Nik released his hold on the captain’s mind and adjusted his course so that he would fly past both turbolasers before the shields could come back up. A pair of laser cannon bolts later, and he was hovering in front of the freighter’s cockpit much the same way the Vulture droid had less than five minutes ago. “This is Jedi Starskimmer to unidentified bulk freighter,” he said, putting a touch of menace in his tone. “Your weapons are gone, your droids are destroyed, and you are dead in space. Surrender.”

After a moment, a gruff voice answered him. “This is Slugger of the Hutt’s Haven. We surrender.”

“I thought you might. Secure all of your weapons in an escape pod and jettison it. If you don’t comply, I’ll be forced to open fire.”

“Whatever you say, Jedi.” Two minutes later, a spherical pod launched from the freighter. Nik adjusted his aim slightly and blew it into dust. “Good man.” With the pirates helpless, he was free to see to the occupants of the other freighter. He flipped his fighter over and sped back towards them.

His initial transmissions were answered only with static, so he moved in for a closer look. He could barely make a man standing in the cockpit, hunched over the controls. When Nik’s fighter moved in, he looked up and waved. Nik spoke into the comm. “This is Jedi Starskimmer to–” A quick check of the vessel’s transponder revealed its name. “Star Raptor, please report your situation.” This time, he got a response. “This is Captain Selanno. Thanks for the assist, Jedi. Both our engines are out, and our shields are down. We won’t be able to make planetfall without major repairs.” Nik’s sensors beeped at him, and he saw a squadron of starfighters rising out of the atmosphere towards them. [i]Better late than never, he thought to himself. “Understood, Captain. Help is on the way.” He switched channels and prepared to speak with the CorSec squadron leader.

Once the officials were convinced that everything was under control, they tractored away the derelict bulk freighter and took the crew into custody. Nik convinced them to let him speak with the crew of the Raptor before they towed it into the orbital yards for repairs. He let R7 guide the interceptor over to the vessel’s port docking collar as he examined the damage the freighter had endured. The area where the portside engine block should have been looked as if a space slug had bitten it off. Scorch marks adorned much of the vessel’s aft section. The starboard engine was somewhat intact, although the housing was crushed in and there was a large tear running along the top. Oddly, the cockpit looked almost brand-new, but he didn’t bother to wonder why. The ship was obviously a patchwork vessel, cheaply purchased and extensively refitted. He was sure that Selanno would have to answer quite a few questions about his ship to CorSec–such as why the Star Raptor was armed with enough weapons for a flight of starfighters.

A small docking tunnel extended from the ship and closed over the interceptor’s cockpit. Nik waited until the readouts indicated a complete seal before popping the canopy and pushing up in the zero gravity. About halfway through the tube, the freighter’s artificial gravity kicked in and he was pushed onto his stomach for the last few meters. He stood before exiting the airlock and removed his helmet, then stepped into the Star Raptor.
