So, I'm planning to get a laptop for Uni, which I'll use as my sole PC/TV/game machine/DVD player/Hi-fi.
I could get a
2.0 Ghz Core2Duo
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
With ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (it gets 12,960 on Notebookcheck, my current card gets about 4500)
For £634/$1062/AUS$1269
OR I could get
2.8 Ghz Core2Duo
4 GB RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
With ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650
For £789/$1322/AUS$1580
Which is the better deal? NEVIIINNN! _________________

Hm. If the price difference were less, I'd say definitely the second one. But, I can't justify another $300 for an 800 MHz increase. It would run faster, but not extremely noticeable... so, the first one is the better deal. _________________

Honestly, very little laptops run that long?
I've had two, and both failed within the first two years. (I didn't buy the cheapest out there, either)
I had a friend that spent almost $2000 on a laptop, and it was fried within a year and 8 months. She's on her second, and its already slowing down.
Idk man... Idk... |

Well, those stats are about the average desktop computer today, so they're even better for a laptop. It should last you just fine for 3 years unless all you plan on doing with it is gaming with the latest, top of the line, neo-Crysis games - it's hard to keep up with them even on desktops. If you do a lot of editing and viewing of videos or music, or multitask a lot, that's really the Core 2 Duos really shine.
At any rate, an extra 800 MHz isn't going to add a lot of time to how fast the computer becomes obsolete. The more important factors in that are the memory and the video card. If that extra $300 came with a better video card or more RAM or any kind of other, significant features, I'd say go for it. But, considering that an entire processor should cost around $200, adding $300 for a small upgrade just isn't worth it, IMO. 2.8 GHz versus 2.0 GHz isn't anything to scoff at, but it isn't going to make the computer go from "okay" to "blinding fast."
As far as it actually operating correctly for 3 years, it's pretty much luck and the quality of the manufacturer. My HP laptop had to have its hard drive replaced right before the 3 year extended warranty ran out (which is something I don't usually buy), and before that, it had power cord issues that had to be fixed (and the problems came back). On the other hand, my friend bought a brand new Dell laptop the other month and it's pretty horrible. It depends on the quality of the manufacturer, but really, it's hit or miss. _________________

I'm nt sure what this stuff about laptops not lasting three years is... but it scares me. I got my current laptop over a year ago (I don't know specifics) and the only thing wrong with it is that a layer inside the screen is cracked (in multiple places, 'cuz after the first time I got mad and intentionally twisted it) and it slows down after full days of use. Incidentally it was the cheapest peice of crap I could find, at USD $320 (I think)
stats are:
Acer
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 GHz
2.0 GB RAM
And an ad for "Genuine" Microsoft software. |

Good luck, Alexus.
And dudop, Acer's a pretty good brand. They can afford to make decent computers without marking them up insanely, because they're not a real big-name company yet. _________________
