“Fan out, constant radio contact. Find the walkers; no heroics.”

Kendra killed the com circuit with the flick of a tongue switch. The E-22 rifle shifted in her hands and thought over her options. The testing gear added an unpleasant several kilos to her armor, and the first exercise to simulate a mutual surprise encounter: walkers stumbling across infantry. Which meant walking far enough from the base that withdrawal to its defense perimeter was not an option. No, they couldn't just say, “Here are the boundaries. Stay in them, or you lose.” Nope, gotta make everything authentic.

Her tactics may have been slightly against the spirit of the war game, but she knew if her troops were caught in the open, clustered together just right for the concussion grenade launchers on the AT-PTs... so, she dispatched one squad, split into three three-man elements, each with a pair of macrobinocs for scouting. The remaining four squads were split into two sections, covering the flanks and set up to encircle the walkers once they were detected. She headed up one section, the other was under Staff Sergeant Avulu.

And now the waiting begins, she mused. Shooting each other with dummy rounds when we should be putting live ones into Daara Zend's face.

All teams, check in.” Came the voice of Captain Graves from the command station. As ordered, the soldiers involved in the exercise aligned with the AT-PTs sounded off, ensuring that everyone was in contact with one another.

That’s everyone.” She said once everyone was accounted for. “So that we are clear on this operation, you will be moving from Point Alpha to Point Beta. Somewhere along that path, you will be encountering your opponents, a team of Stormtroopers. They are trained to be among the best soldiers the Empire has to offer, so do not underestimate them. I also don’t want to see any unnecessary heroics out there. We are testing equipment, not people, so don’t go wrecking them trying to pull any fancy stunts they were not intended for.

Good Luck all. Captain Graves out.”

With that, the team began to move out, leaving Zorrin to give commands to his team.

“You heard the lady.” He said. “Move out. Walkers in a spread formation, pair up by walker numbers. Team two take point. Keep in constant contact, if you spot anything report it in immediately and fall back to wait for reinforcements. You have permission to open if spotted, but do not give away positions or press engagements without backup and my orders to do so.”

Splitting up, the nine walkers formed into three two-man teams and one three-man team, with him taking the extra walker on account of his leading rank. Team two pressed on ahead of the rest, a decision designed to give the walkers and the support that followed behind them ample forewarning of any enemy positions or potential ambushes. Teams three and four, meanwhile, would take outside positions, ready to defend against flanking efforts or give a warning if they passed by or were hit from the side. Team one meanwhile, which Zorrin was a part of, remained roughly centered from the other three positions, ready to move as reinforcements wherever the enemy was spotted or redirect one or both of his ‘wingmen’ to the other teams as necessary.

There was a risk that if they existed, they’d be taken out early, but it was a risk Nick was willing to take to flush out any surprise attacks the stormtroopers might have been planning. It wasn’t certain death, especially if any troopers discovered hesitated in deciding whether trying to take out two walkers was worth giving themselves away.

The first moments would be the worst, no knowing when or where they’d encounter the enemy. It would be all guess work up until then.
