Despite being located near the edge of the galaxy, Terminus was a heavily trafficked shipping center. This was likely due to it being located near the intersection of the Corellian Trade Spine and the Hydian Way, two of the galaxies super-hyperroutes.

(Continues from Here.)

The fleet was in battle-ready status before it dropped out of hyperspace, and as the Hydralisk returned to realspace, the sound of war echoed through the Imperial starship’s bridge.

“Covert invasion protocols have been enacted.” Dath-ron heard one of his bridge crew announce. “The Invasion of Terminus has begun.”

Dath-ron only nodded, and brought the battle-plan up on his patch HUD to review the intended direction and outcome of the conflict. The battle had been rather thoroughly planned out, and as much as it pained the General, he would likely have to give few direct orders any time soon – it was, for lack of a better term, on auto-pilot.

“Phase 1 has concluded, General.” Ferris informed him. “The fleet is already in the midst of Phase 2.”

The HUD scratched out Phase 1 – it was a minor thing, really. The kind of tactics that would be carried out for any invasion. Jamming of communication signals, interdiction fields, and so on and so forth.

Phase 2 wasn’t much different. Much like Krauss had done at Bakura, the fleet opened fire on any ships that attempted to flee the system, military and civilian alike. Anyone who wished to stay alive would be forced to return to the planet’s surface. A few got past the capital ships, but without access to hyperspace, there was plenty of time for the fleets fighters to pick off anything before they got to safety.

The swarming and confusion of the ships also made it far easier for Dath-ron’s fleet to tear apart Terminus’ orbital defenses. It had them, certainly, but it was probably the weakest target the Empire had attacked thus far, Bespin possibly being the exception. Unlike Muunilinst or Bilbringi, it was important for its shipping, not its military or being center of the galaxies finances. And Bakura had decades of fear of the return of its old foe to keep it on its toes.

Terminus, however, didn’t have the same reason to keep itself heavily defended. And with Dath-ron’s overwhelming numbers and state-of-the-art firepower, the Empire cleared the planets orbit of major threats in no time.

“Phase 2 has concluded.” Ferris informed him. The words vanished from his eye-patch as the next phase took center stage. “Phase 3 commencing.”

Major planetary defenses were little threat, either. With all the ships looking to get back to the planets surface, it had left its defense coordinators with a question as to their shields – did they leave them open long enough to allow as many ships back as possible, or close the ships off to safety and possibly doom some right away to crash into them. It had been enough of a window for Dath-ron’s ships to sneak in and destroy the orbital shields from the inside. The planetary turbolasers fell soon after, not causing enough damage to the Imperial fleet to make any difference at all.

“Phase 3 is proceeding as planned.” Ferris announced. “Preparing for Phase 4.”

Phase 4 was where things would start to get interesting. They needed to capture the planet as a beachhead for the eventual march up through the galaxies super hyper-routes. They could continue orbital bombardment for only so long, and thus they would need to actually set foot on the planet and clear out the inevitable resistance.

“Do we have word on the status of the Bespin operation?” Dath-ron asked a crewmember, mostly out of boredom for having so little to do, an unfortunate side effect of the Empire having prepared this operation as well as it had and staffing it with the best officers, crewmen, and troops the galaxy had to offer. He couldn’t wait for when the effect of surprise had worn off on the Rebels and Dath-ron would be offered a real fight against them.

“Last contact before the invasion began reported that things were proceeding as intended.” The crewmember replied.
“Good.” He said. He didn’t trust the witch Kruass any further than he could throw her, but her own mission was as vital to the success of this invasion as anything. As long as the galaxy kept its focus on the far more celebrated City of the Clouds, it would take longer for them to notice that something was wrong at Terminus, giving Dath-ron crucial extra time to secure the planet for Zend and the one true Galactic Empire.

“Phase 4 underway.”

Dath-ron watched out the ships viewport as TIE-escorted landing pods made their way towards the planets surface. Once they had penetrated what remained of the planets capital, they would be followed by the landing craft that would carry the second wave of troops and ground vehicles. That would be the final nail in the coffin, all but assuring that his fleet would achieve its objective well within the acceptable parameters.

Switching the focus of his eyepatch, the Rotharn brought up data on the landing pods and the TIEs that preceded them. Most of the pods contained members of his own species – he wanted them to be at the forefront of the ground assault. While it did mean that they would undoubtedly suffer the heaviest early losses, Dath-ron found it worthwhile for the trade-off. To these ‘known regions’, his people were still a mystery, never having been seen before, especially in combat. That would help throw off the planets defenders as they tried to reason with what they were fighting, giving them just a little bit of an extra edge.

But more importantly, it was a symbolic move, showing that even as members of Zend’s Galactic Empire, the Rotharn were ready to fully reclaim their legacy and expand it so that one day, there would be not a single civilized corner of the galaxy that would not know exactly who the Rotharn were and tremble at their name.

As they continued their decent towards the surface, he watched as their numbers slowly dropped, a reminder that the planets defenders were still putting up a fight. But while a few unfortunate landing pods found themselves on the end of a lucky shot, the losses were well within acceptable parameters. Like every member of the Empire, they knew that their death might come in service to it.

The patch indicated as the pods began to impact on the planets surface. Reports from the surface soon followed, indicating that their troops were securing their landing zones and had begun to engage the enemy.

“Launch the second wave.” Dath-ron ordered. The underling in charge of the matter nodded and the command was relayed, and moments later the real landing craft began to land on the planet. Again, they were accompanied by TIE craft, some of them having begun to return from having escorted down the landing pods.

“Let me know when we have a secure command center on the planets surface.” Dath-ron said.

“Aye, sir.” Ferris replied.

Terminus was not a planet that the Empire had considered much of a military threat. It had little in terms of a real military, no doubt helped by having years of little more than pirates to worry about and assuming that it’s precious Union could protect it if a real threat ever showed up.

Dath-ron snickered under his breath at the thought. As it just so happened, a real threat had shown up, and there was no sign of the Union to be seen. Not even a response from any of the rebel states that comprised it were anywhere to be seen. Just as planned.

Thrown on top of that was the element of surprise that left what defenders Terminus had left caught off guard, the overwhelming firepower and numbers of the Empire, and the immense skill and discipline with which the forces under Dath-ron’s command operated.

It was no wonder, then, that the Rotharn General didn’t have to wait long before he was informed that the planets capital region was effectively secured.

“There are a few remote pockets of resistance remaining, but those holdouts should be neutralized in short order.” Ferris reported.
“Excellent.” Dath-ron said. “Contact the hangar bay and have them prepare a shuttle and my escort.”
“Yes, sir.” Ferris responded, and quickly left to relay the order so that it could be attended to. The man knew what Dath-ron was planning, and while he recognized that the Commodore had never come around to seeing the value of it, he had served under Dath-ron’s command long enough to not put up any argument about it anymore.

He took the turbolifts down to where the requested shuttle was waiting for him, along with a squad of soldiers and a four-fighter flight group that would follow him down. They weren’t the absolute best troops Dath-ron had at his disposal – the General knew better than to waste such troops on escort duty – but they were certainly up there, and among the most loyal that had either come from the Rotharn Sector or that Zend had entrusted him with.

“General, a report just came in from Bespin.” Said Warrant Officer Klein-Han, the Rotharnian trooper in charge of his escort squad.
“Your tone suggests that it’s not good news.” Dath-Ron replied.
“A military response was sent to challenge Commander Krauss’ forces, more than her fleet was prepared to deal with. We believe that many of them were sent directly from Kaut.”
“Kaut…kaut…” Dath-ron thought for a moment, before the planet and its details came to mind. “Oh yes, Kaut. An interesting detail. What of Bespin?”
“Krauss retreated from the planet, but not before having Cloud City destroyed.” Officer Klein-Han said.
“Hmph.” Dath-ron replied, and turned to enter the shuttle. “A most disappointing outcome.”

As much as he neither trusted nor liked his fellow commander, Dath-ron was not the type to take glee or pleasure from her failure. The fact remained that her loss was the Empire’s loss. Krauss may have been an untrustworthy witch, but at least she was a loyal untrustworthy witch.

From the reports he had read, Cloud City could have been a tremendous prize for Zend’s forces, but now it was nothing more than a waste. Even if it had been the witch that had been responsible for the loss, to be happy about it would be nothing less than to commit treason against Admiral Zend herself.

His troops followed him as the General took his position, choosing to stand near the front of the entrance ramp than take a seat. Only two of the soldiers stood between him and whatever would be on the other side of the hull when they landed, while Klein-Han stood by his side to provide further details.

“See to it that someone has a copy of the records and reports from the battle transferred to me when they become available.” He said, and Klein-Han made an unspoken note of it. “Any indication yet that our own operation is threatened?”
“Not yet, Sir.” Officer Klein-Han said. “Though we can only learn so much at this point.”
“Of course.” Dath-ron said.

He could feel the shuttle take off as they began their decent to the planets surface, where General Dath-ron planned to oversee the final stages of the planets conquest personally, as well as the plan that would follow. If Cloud City was lost, Dath-ron would at least make good use of its sacrifice and the distraction it had provided.

Per Dath-ron’s orders, the planetary Command Center had not been set up at the planets former capital building. Instead, once his soldiers had seized control of the planets primary starfighter base, they had quickly taken preliminary efforts to convert it for Imperial use. That it was already a military installation meant that it was a prime location to convert for the Empire’s own military efforts, and with full repairs, expansion, and upgrades, Dath-ron expected it would be ideal as the Empires planetary Headquarters once it was up and running at full capacity.

When his shuttle landed, the starfighters that had escorted him down were diverted to aid the effort to secure airspace for troops being moved across the planet by various transports, while all but Klein-Han and a second soldier moved out to ensure base security and provide the base with assistance as needed. They’d be close by to follow Dath-ron’s direct command if the inconceivable happened and they were needed, but in the meantime it would allow them to avoid letting their experience, knowledge, and skills be wasted standing around waiting for their General to be put in harms way.

As he exited his Shuttle, Dath-ron first exited the hangar bay and proceeded out into the open, taking a short moment to observe the combat engineers in action. Already, they were making admirable progress repairing the damage that had been previously caused and reinforcing its defenses, though he knew that the real work wouldn’t begin until after the planet was secure and combat operations were finished.

Satisfied with what he saw, the Rotharn turned back towards the base and went inside to the main control room, where there was a veritable hodgepodge of new Imperial technology hardwired into the older computers that the people of Terminus had been using. Again, it was a suitable situation until combat had concluded, but he looked forward to when they could replace everything with more permanent upgrades.

“General, it’s good to see you on the ground.” Reported Colonel Jarrin Rahth, the man who was in charge of the base and, by extension, most of the people who were operating in and around the capital region.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Dath-ron said. “I’ll expect a full tour of the facilities later, but thus far I congratulate your men on their work getting this command center up and operational.”
“Of course, I’m certain there will be time enough for that later, sir. General Tagge wanted me to relay that he expects we’ll have Terminus fully under Imperial control in relatively short order.”
“Excellent.” Dath-ron said. A low-ranked General, Ian Tagge was the man that Dath-ron had assigned more direct control of the land invasion to. He was a man that Dath-ron would have to thank for ensuring that the battle plan that had been assembled for the planet had run as smoothly as it had. “Where is General Tagge now?”
“He went to a frontline command post to oversee the final stages.” Rahth said, and led Dath-ron over to a large holo-emitter center.

A hologram of Terminus formed over the planet, and a number of red and green locations lit up.

“This is our location.” Rahth said as he pointed to a green dot. The planet then swung around 180 degrees, where three red dots were arranged in a rough triangle formation, though with significant distances between them. Around them were a rough circle of dots, with Imperial insignias nearby to indicate what they stood for.

“These are where our intelligence places the last major pockets of resistance.” Rahth explained. “There are a number of small pockets scattered across the surface, but nothing of any significant size or concern. Teams are sweeping anywhere we believe they might be trying to hide, we should have them taken care of in short order.”
“Make sure of it.” Dath-ron ordered. He knew that if they were allowed to run around free, small pockets could easily join together into a significant fighting force. While they would undoubtedly fail any efforts to take back their planet, it would still be to the Empires detriment and his embarrassment if Terminus were subject to a long-term organized guerrilla resistance moment.

“Have Tagge contact me the moment he becomes available.” Dath-ron said.
“General Tagge is already waiting for you.” Said a communications officer.
“He knew you’d want to contact him once you reached the surface.” Rahth explained.

Dath-ron said nothing, but simply nodded. It was on of the benefits of having worked with the man several times before.

With a few beeps and flicker, the image of Terminus was replaced with General Tagge, who’s image was only large enough that Dath-ron could look his hologram straight in the eye.

“General Dath-ron.” Tagge said with a salute.
“General Tagge, report.” The Rotharn replied.
“We’re on the verge of wiping out the last of the planets forces. They don’t have anything left that should prove a threat to our superior numbers and firepower, but I’m taking pains to ensure that they don’t take as few of our troops out with them.”

Tagge brought up a map of the area in front of him, which lit up with dots to indicate troop positions as the General explained his battle plan.

“We’re currently creating a noose around their surrounding forces. While there’s still a significant distance between them, I’ve avoided attempts to drop any troops into the middle of their formation or keep the forces from joining together. There’s a legitimate possibility that if they can join together fast enough, it could leave some of our troops surrounded or flanked.”

Dath-ron nodded at the effort to avoid unnecessarily risking his troops lives. It was a suitable response, considering that their invasion was hardly pressed for time.

“What’s your plan of operation once you have them surrounded?” Dath-ron asked.
“Normally, I’d consider bombardment, but the area they’ll probably gather in is a significant part of the planets metropolitan network. One of the more important areas on this side of the planet. I’d like to avoid destroying it outright if possible.”

“Instead, I plan to leave a small number of openings in our defensive line.” Tagge continued. “The intention is that they’ll see an opportunity to either escape or flank our forces, then try to exploit these opportunities. Instead, we’ll have a secondary line waiting for them, ready to tear them apart once they believe they’ve broken through.”
“Excellent work.” Dath-ron said. “You are to be commended on your work here.”
“Thank you, sir.” Tagge said.
“However, for the time being you are to hold them there and prevent their escape.”
“Sir?” Tagge asked, unsure as to why his superior officer wanted to avoid carrying out his plan.
“It is my intention to broadcast a signal across the planet informing whoever’s yet to accept our rule that they have lost and that this planet now belongs to Admiral Zend and the Galactic Empire. They will be given one last opportunity to surrender and save everyone a lot of time and death rather than continuing their fruitless struggle.”

“General Dath-ron, if I may speak freely?”

Dath-ron turned to a Lieutenant behind him that had spoken up. She appeared to be a younger officer, a near-human of some kind that the General couldn’t name off-hand, but he felt safe in assuming she was from one of the species that Zend had brought with her when she had first arrived in the Generals region of he galaxy.

“Yes, Lieutenant?” Dath-ron asked. “Do you have something to add?”
“We haven’t yet secured the planetary leadership.” The Lieutenant said. “Reports said that while we’ve captured most of their officials, there are some still at large, including the planetary leader himself.”

Dath-ron looked at the Lieutenant, annoyed.

“I fail to see the significance of this.” Dath-ron said.
“We need him to surrender the planet to us.” The Lieutenant said.
“We don’t need anyone to surrender anything to us.” Dath-ron said.

He turned and looked to the Lieutenant, and Dath-ron could tell the woman was very much regretting having spoken up.

“The formalities and the legalities of the matter do not dictate who controls this planet.” Dath-ron said. “Why should we lower ourselves to the authority of this deposed leader you speak of? Who is he say who controls this planet?”

The Lieutenant made a small but noticeable gulp, but considering her initial reaction to the General’s response, he was impressed with how she was holding up and recomposing herself.

“The fact is that we are on the verge of conquering this planet, and once we have succeeded, it won’t matter who anyone says is the ruler of this planet, because only the Empire will have the authority to enforce its rule on this planet.”

He looked the Lieutenant straight in the eye.

“Your name?” He asked.
“Lt. Wyluu.” She said. “Lt. Aara Wyluu.”
“Lr. Wyluu, take this as an important learning opportunity. Fact is more important than formality or what anyone claims to be true. And the fact is that we don’t need anyone to surrender this rebellious world to us, because we can simply take it by force. For all intents and purposes, we already have. Is that understood?”

“Yes sir.” Lt. Wyluu replied.
“Good. Dismissed.” Dath-ron said, waving her off.

He turned to Colonel Rahth as the woman left the room, apparently reluctantly from what Dath-ron caught of it.

“How did that woman get assigned to this command post?” He asked the Colonel.
“I’ll look into it.” Rahth said.
“I look forward to finding that out. I understood that Zend expected a higher level of discipline and intelligence from its officer. In the meantime, have her re-assigned till she learns about the realities of war.”
“Yes sir.” Rahth said again.

“My apologies.” Dath-ron said as he returned to his conversation with General Tagge. “Our troops are to prepare to take into custody anyone who comes forward and accepts our offer to surrender. They shall then be separated so that civilians and soldiers are processed through separate facilities. Civilians will remain on the planet so that they can aid the Empire in ensuring this planet plays its part to aid in our war against the rest of the galaxy. The soldiers are to be shipped off to Eriga Nu.”
“I’m sure that will delight Commander Krauss.” Tagge replied.

“Yes…Krauss.” Dath-ron said, though he took displeasure at the taste of the woman’s name leaving his mouth.

“What of those that don’t surrender?” Tagge asked.
“What else?” Dath-ron replied, though it was clear that they all already knew the answer to that.

“Wipe them out.” General Dath-ron said. “All of them.”

“General, I’m pleased to report that all major resistance cells have been neutralized.” Reported General Tagge as his hologram finished saluting General Khail. “Terminus is ours.”

Though he smiled at the report, though he held up his hand to silence the would-be cheers and self-congratulations that likely would have otherwise filled the room.

“What of the smaller pockets of resistance?” Dath-ron asked.
“We know they’re still out there, but it’s too early to know for sure what kind of impact they might have. It could take some time to wipe them out entirely. They know the terrain far better than anyone in our ranks, and if they choose to lay low and play smart with their operations, it could be some time before we root them out entirely.”

Dath-ron nodded at the report.

“See if you can find any locals willing to provide our troops with assistance in finding our way around the more difficult areas of the terrain.” He said. “You have standing orders to destroy any remaining resistance as you are able. But I want your troops to focus on defense rather than offense now. I want you to ensure that anyone who tries to get in the way of Operation Sarlacc quickly regrets it.”
“Yes, sir.” Tagge replied, and Dath-ron cut the conversation.

With his business with the lower General concluded, Dath-ron turned his attention to Colonel Rahth.

“Commence with Preparation Phase of Operation Sarlacc.” He ordered. “You have 24 hours before the full operation begins. I expect hourly updates on your progress.”

The Colonel acknowledged the order and quickly made his way out of the room to see to his task.

While Dath-ron didn’t like the time limit himself, it was critical that his men prepare the planet as best they were able in as short a time as possible. Every hour they delayed increased the chances someone would notice things weren’t right on Terminus on their own, even with the Empire having placed a chokehold on its communications and transit.

While time had been on the Empires side for the invasion of Terminus, now it was working against them.

With the 24 hour mark passed, General Dath-Ron signaled for Commodore Ferris, still aboard the Hydralisk, and Admiral West, stationed aboard the Killing Blow. The planets security was not as well established as the Rotharn would have preferred, but he could extend their deadline no longer. If their plan were to have any chance of success, it would have to begin now. Genuine planetary weaponry and shielding would have to wait till later. For now, the temporary emplacements would have to do, and if the General’s plan went as it should, they would more than suffice till later.

“General.” Ferris and West said as they acknowledged their superiors presence.
“Operation Sarlacc is to begin immediately.” Dath-Ron said. “Commodore, you are to take War Fleet Rotharn’s command battle group to the safety of the far side of Terminus. Admiral North will be responsible for taking the remainder of the fleet and waiting outside the system until you receive the signal.”

“Aye, sir.” Ferris responded, and his channel was cut. West, however, remained for the time being.”
“Sir, if I might once again request that you to reconsider this particular course of action?”
“Request denied.” Dath-Ron replied. “I have my reason, you have your orders. Now carry them out.”

Reluctantly, the Admiral nodded and cut his channel as well.

His attention turned to a holographic display of the system and the ships in orbit around the planet, and watched as the splinter portion of the fleet broke away and began its orbit to where incoming ships would have difficulty detecting them at first. Soon after, the larger portion of the fleet moved away from the planets gravity well and quickly took the quick hyperspace jump to a position nearby.

With the fleet moved out, the interdiction field and comm. silence that had previously encompassed the planet lifted. Dath-Ron pointed to a comm. officer stationed nearby.

“Play it.”

The silence of the planet was soon replaced with the sounds of an Imperial invasion of Terminus, only one that had already taken place and concluded. Much of it, even, was taken directly from the battle that had taken place just recently. If the galaxy hadn’t already figured out that something was wrong with Terminus, they would now know full well about it now.

Just like Dath-Ron wanted.

“General Tagge, all hands are to be prepared for battle at a moments notice.” Dath-Ron ordered the officer, who was presently stationed on the far side of the room. “See to it that no one gets the idea that no one might be coming until we can confirm that is the case.”

“Yes sir.” Tagge said.

Now they only had to wait to see if anyone would take the bait.

Dath-ron Khail sat alone in his temporary quarters on Terminus, eyes closed as he meditated. The act helped to clear his head, and his technique was one that had been used by countless generations of successful Rotharn leaders that had come before him. With as long as the forces on Terminus were waiting for battle, there was little else he could do to prepare himself.

His thoughts – or lack thereof – were interrupted with the sound of a beep. With an annoyed grown, he raised his hand and signaled to a mobile hologram droid. The droid rolled over and stopped in front of him. Its activation activated a channel with Colonel Rahth.

“What is it?” He asked, annoyed. He knew it couldn’t possibly be the Union counter-attack. The alarms would have sounded if that was the case.
“You wanted to be informed if we hadn’t received any indication an attack was coming yet.”

Dath-ron looked at the chronometer in his room and was surprised to discover what time it was. Indeed, had given the order, and it would be foolish to hold it against the Colonel for following it.

“Indeed.” Dath-ron said, responding to the Colonel.

Nothing. No response, no acknowledgement, nothing. Terminus had been taken, but as far as Dath-ron could tell, the Union rebels either didn’t care enough to mount a counter-assault or didn’t think they could mount a successful counter-assault yet.

“Have General Tagge recall the fleet.” Dath-ron said. “We must begin building the planets real defenses and prepare for our next invasions.”

Tagge nodded, and the droid rolled back to the corner it had come from as the communication ended.

The Rotharn commander wasn’t sure what to think. It would be good for the Empire if the old Empire and their allies were already willing to roll over and take it, but he had hoped for more of a fight than this.

Dath-ron let out an annoyed sigh as he stood up and shook off the feeling of nothingness, then proceeded out of his quarters so that he’d be ready when the fleet returned.

They had a pair of invasions to prepare for.
