"Millennium Falcon, all clearances are in place. Permission granted to land on platform 2685. Please follow your escort and do not deviate from your present trajectory. Welcome to Bakura."

An audible grunt filtered over the speaker before the comm crackled and fell silent. It was clear from the man's tired speech that whoever had been assigned traffic duty for the day was in a less than stellar mood. And really, who could blame them? Not only was the job repetitive and boring, but on this particular day, they had a whole other mess to deal with; a mess that fell squarely on the shoulders of Solo Enterprises.

Han sighed and reclined back in the nerf-hide leather of the seat that conformed a little too well to his body. It had been worn down from decades of use, much like the rest of the ship and her pilot. In fact, this was the first time Han had taken out the Falcon in the course of several months and he felt regret that it had come on the call of yet another political crisis.

According to the report that had been laid on his desk a standard day ago, Bakura had spontaneously shutdown and grounded all freighters and cargo haulers bearing the Solo Enterprises seal. Apparently some executive in Bakura's shipping department caught wind of possible illegal activity centered around the crew of one of the freighters and effectively shutdown the entire operation. In order to release the entire fleet, Bakura shipping was demanding a full search of all the vessels on the tarmac against contract and a supplemental fee to compensate for lost revenue. The only problem was, Bakura wasn't the one losing revenue - the only thing they were interested in was arresting potential criminals and something just didn't sit right with that. With Bakura's history with the Empire, it raised a viable concern and one that was worth investigating in person.

Of course, being a political case and all, Han had asked Leia along for good measure and as he eased the battered freighter toward the blue and green orb of the planet below them, he was glad that he did. She had witnessed yet another Force premonition in hyperspace and had warned that there was more to the situation on Bakura than they were letting on. Han didn't like the idea of walking into a trap and so he had taken the extra precaution to actually pack his old gun rig and modified DL-44. It wasn't something he carried much anymore with the more 'respectable' title he held, but it was still something that brought him comfort and reminded him of the life he had left behind all those years ago.

"That wasn't so bad," he muttered under his breath in reference to their approach. Outside the viewport, the clouds dissipated as the landscape began to take shape before them. "Now let's hope the rest of the trip goes just as smooth and we don't end up with an extended vacation."

Not expecting a reply from his wife, Han eased the Falcon forward toward the designated landing platform.

The dash for the Falcon had been easier than expected as most of the fighting had been focused in the heart of the city. It wasn't until Han attempted to bring the systems online that the port authority had been alerted and the real fun began to unfold. He should have known better than to expect that the Imps had not been monitoring all channels and links out of the city. What they didn't know, however, is that Han had a plan to circumvent that.

While the kid lagged along behind, gawking at the scene unraveling before them, Han and Leia had been busy making connections. Although most of the SE vessels had been destroyed at the main spaceport in the initial attack on the city, the crews were still intact and awaiting orders. Most of them would now be assisting them in running the blockade, commandeering freighters and other small vessels that had been abandoned at lesser spaceports due to the lockdown. With so many ships coming at them at once, some of them were bound to make it through.

It would be a suicide mission, yes, but it only took one to sound the alarm and inform the rest of the galaxy. That's what Han hoped for, anyway.

After disposing of a group of droids with a quick swivel of the belly gun, Han settled in for the long run, checking and rechecking systems as he started to ease the old freighter off the tarmac.

"Stay sharp and let me know when Koorgin and his crews are in position," Han instructed Leia, referring to the captain who would be leading the SE group of ragtag vessels.

The cockpit door suddenly slid aside to emit a frantic Lohden, his footsteps falling heavily on the decking as he entered. "We need to go, now! I think they transmitted our coordinates."

A smug smile came to Han's lips as he shrugged nonchalantly. "Don't worry," he said with a glance over his shoulder. "I have everything under control. We're not gonna be alone up there. We have backup. When those Imps see the swarm of ships coming at them, they're not gonna know what to do."

The kid didn't exactly seem convinced. "Where can I be useful?" he asked anyway.

"Can you hit a target? I could use someone on the guns." He reached up and adjusted something overhead as the Falcon shot up through the atmosphere. "I just need you to keep 'em off our rear. I can handle everything else coming at us from the front."

Any other advice he was about to give to the kid was cutoff as the comm crackled to life. "Captain Solo, Koorgin here. We're in position and forming up on your six."

Part of him was relieved to hear the gruff captain's voice, but one look at the growing Imperial fleet looming in front of them quickly changed his mind. This wasn't going to be easy and there were sure to be casualties. It was a price they paid for helping the galaxy. Han had just been lucky to stay alive this long. There was always the possibility that this maneuver would be his last.

Han swallowed any ounce of fear and anxiety he felt and leaned forward to answer the captain. "Copy that, Koor. Just hold position. You'll know when to break and get down to business. I trust you."

"It's been a pleasure, Solo. Good luck and see you on the other side."

The comm clicked and went silent as the first bolts of energy lanced out from the lead Star Destroyer in the blockade.

"It's show time," Han muttered under his breath as he gunned the thrusters, sending the old freighter forward at attack speed, jinking and juking to avoid enemy fire as she went.

Kalin had never felt the adrenaline rush of war, a sensation which would penetrate through every pore and switch to every thought and to every action all for the greater good, as his grandmother would say.. Kalin forgot about his allegiance to Lumiya, his dislike for Han and Leia, for the moment, he was going to do whatever it took to survive. The first Star Destroyer came into view and it looked much like a hardcore nightmare from the seventh hell of Corellia. Lucky for them, Han must've upgraded the shield grid and weapons, as the old bird did better off than Kalin would've thought against the extra-galactic invaders.

Part of the reason the man deserved to stay behind the honored rank of General.

His knee bounced up and down in the gunner chair, he was beyond nervous, but even those emotions of safety and precaution could not stop him here. The first Imperial TIE lined up in is sights, his fingers slamming on the trigger... Boom. One less dot appeared on the radar screen as the Falcon flew through the wreckage and small explosion, nothing like seeing the old freighter flying or depicted more commonly as attacking/fleeing one of the two Death Stars on Yavin and the moon of Endor.

Kalin switched to his next target and then another before the ship shook pretty hard. Two cruisers, much faster and stronger than what they looked like, had matched their course and their speed would likely overtake them in a couple of minutes. Kalin worked his best among the enemy fighters, but it was widely futile, as a crazy maneuver would put him under the belly of an attack cruiser or the graveyard of luxury yachts from various planets across the Galactic Union.

"How are we coming along - almost outta here yet?" Kalin asked, but he could tell the worst was far from over, in fact, they barely made it into the gravity well of the planetoid let alone out of the blockade.

Kalin realized his earpiece had been turned down, "Sorry, sir. My hedaset was... down. I think I'm good now..." He paused, taking a few readings, "My gods, are you reading what I am reading?" Using the chair, Lohden rotated his body and positioned the gun....

A string of curses flew freely from Han's mouth as the freighter took hit after hit from the oncoming fleet. They were a relentless bunch and Han was glad for the shield upgrades he had performed a month ago to replace outdated systems. But even Han's own hand and delicate touch wouldn't keep the shields at maximum for long. Despite new upgrades to keep her performing at the top of her game, the Falcon was still an old girl and she could only take so much before breaking apart.

"C'mon, dammit, don't fail me now," he grumbled with frustration as he fought against a faulty stabilizer. It was amazing how certain parts of the old freighter decided to break as if on cue. It was like she knew what was going on and this was some kind of retaliation for everything he had put her through over the years. "This was supposed to be fixed months ago!"

"My gods, are you reading what I am reading?" came the kid's anxious cry over the headset comm.

Han frowned and pressed on the earpiece, intending to ignore him so he could continue his struggle with the stabilizer, but a dense cloud of something in the distance gave him pause. "What the hell is that..." he mumbled to himself, his eyes narrowing curiously.

"Solo! You see that?!" Captain Koorgin's voice came over the main comm speaker. "I've never seen anything like it! There must be thousands of 'em!"

"Thousands of what?!" Han barked with heightened frustration. His hands were a blur as he worked them over the control console, trying to bring up more information on the mysterious craft heading in their direction. "Kalin, what the hell do you see from your end? I got nothing--"

His voice trailed off as his jaw slowly unhinged at the scene unfolding outside the viewport. The dense cloud in the distance slowly began to take shape as thousands of individual fighter craft, all swarming about like flint gnats on a bantha's ass. They were of a sleek design that Han had not witnessed before, but from this vantage point, they certainly outdid the TIE fighter in terms of class and vulnerability. Things were about to get very messy.

"I have a feeling I'm gonna hate seeing those guys in action," Han muttered to Leia, who stared beyond the viewport with disbelief. "Any chance of getting a diagnostic?"

"Are you even reading me?!" the harried voice of Koorgin continued over the comm, bits of static mixing in with his transmission. "I said there's thousands of them and we---attack! Br—off! Repeat, break--"

Han slammed his fist against the console in anger. "No, dammit! Stay in formation!" he started to shout into the comm, but it was too late. Several freighters and other small craft were already breaking for open space, flying precariously too close to the Falcon as they passed overhead in their attempt to flee.

"Godsdammit," he grumbled, quickly flipping switches before pushing forward on the yoke, sending the freighter into a steep dive to avoid the rush of oncoming fighters. "Looks like I have to do everything myself!" He reached up and tapped the earpiece. "Get ready, kid, we're going in hot. Just shoot at anything that moves and you'll be fine."

As the Falcon leveled out on her new flight path, the oncoming swarm of fighters met them. The fight was on.

Kalin could barely grip the concept of what they were actually trying to do, and never before in his life, had his heart ever raced so quickly. The sheer numbers of the swarm! He felt a surge, he was going to vomit. "Kalin," A familiar voice called, but it wasn't Han or Leia. "Stay strong, stay focused. Save the Corellian." His palms were sweating, the control grip of the turret gun was moist within a matter of seconds. For years he thought he could handle battle on the front lines, but this was different than what he had imagined, in fact it was much worse. He didn't speak to Lumiya's impression, he couldn't be overheard, not with a mic to the man she was trying to torture just inches from his mouth.

He took a deep breath, wiping his hands on his pants, and opened with a renewed sense of determination. The closer the swarm came, the more stress built up, and in response to that, adrenaline to counter it. His mind raced, but they were still too distant to start shooting. Still, Han stayed the course and into the madness they went. Why are there so many of them?! As they breached the cusp of the swarm, it became clear why their had been so many in such a concentrated space.

It was a freighter bloodbath. Ships from all over the galaxy were bleeding crewmembers and parts. Hyperdrives exploded on two Mon Calamari-style shipping cruisers, while three Corellian freighters hauled straight into the thickest line of fire. Starfighters of unique design flew in a complicated web, strafing the various vessels from all sides in constant bombardment.

The Corellian yelled something over the speakers, he didn't quite catch what he said, but Kalin realized he hadn't fired a shot yet. He pressed down on the trigger, and unleashed his first payload of laser fire. It connected with two starfighters, the first simply absorbed the blast, but the second buckled and exploded. He fired wildly, the thickness of the swarm allowed his random sweeps to hit nearly anything, while avoiding the dying friendly-craft. "Han, I think-" Before he could finish, a thicker bunch of starfighters broke from within the seeming perfect ensemble horde and completed a run across the row of crippled starships. In order, they all exploded.

Kalin locked onto key bombers, and saved the Millennium Falcon from a direct engagement. At least, for now.

"They're going to regroup, and we've run out of... diversions." Kalin tried not to sound uncaring, "We might have to go back-"

A large missile impacted against the ship...the shields were still good- BAM, Kalin was nearly thrown out his chair with that one. "We're not going to last too long in the hornet's nest, Captain Solo!" Kalin loaded up the shield information... they were doing all right, but they weren't out of the gravity well yet. Another pilot appeared on the comm signal.

"Yeeeaaaaa!" He screamed over the channels, "Come and get some mother frakkers!" All of his turrets and shields had been extended to their max, most likely redirected from lifesupport, backup generators and the extra hyperdrive. If his main drive was taken offline, he'd be stuck, dead. "Go, go go boys! Go hard or go home!" Since his energy signature pinged on every radar, it was no wonder the swarm of pilots adjusted to compensate... it managed to take a few bolts off the Falcon, but the man was dead within twenty seconds. His last transmission had been, "Frak the Empire! Zend can kiss my -static."

"Captain Solo," Kalin breathed, "We're not going to make this." It wasn't the first Star Destroyer they screamed passed or the swarm, and the accumulated ship injuries, but a new battleship moved towards them. It looked lethal with hundreds of turbolasers with three anti-starfighter cruisers acting as an escort. They couldn't do this, not alone. He closed his eyes, his gun firing couldn't save them from this...

Han winced against the blast tinting as one of the SE crewed freighters took a direct hit and blew apart a little too close for comfort. Shards of white hot metal and burning debris bounced off the Falcon's hull, causing several proximity alarms to sound as the ship buffeted off to starboard with the impact. Han's knuckles were white against the yoke as he struggled to maintain altitude and bring the old girl back under control.

But the Empire wouldn't offer him that opportunity...

The Falcon was still tumbling away to starboard when another wing of fighters decided to come around for another pass. Green lances of energy sailed past the viewport, heading directly for their vitals at the rear of the ship. Within seconds, the freighter rocked again with another direct hit, producing more alarms and another steady string of curses.

"Captain Solo," came the crackle of the kid's voice over his headset. We're not going to make this!"

Han shook his head with determination and set his jaw. If there was anything he wanted to be remembered for, it was defying the odds. It was almost like second nature to him and no matter how miserably he appeared to fail, he always came through with barely a scratch. Luke had credited it to the Force offering a helping hand, but Han simply called it luck. He was a lucky man and damned if his luck was going to run out here.

"We'll make it, kid," he called back over the mic. "See that battle cruiser up ahead? That's the last thing standing between us and freedom. And we're much smaller than she is. We'll squeeze through."

Of course, he failed to mention that it wouldn't be an easy pass, but the kid didn't have to know the specifics. As long as he believed that they were almost home free. He'd be optimistic and more focused that way and that meant better shooting. And with what they were up against, Han could use all the backup he could get.

"Alright, princess," he said out of the corner of his mouth, his gaze still focused on the viewport and the mass of ships ahead. "This is it. Tighten your restraints and hang on."

With bated breath, Han counted down the seconds in his head until they had a clear shot for the cruiser. Once he reached zero, he slammed the accelerator forward as far as it would go. The Falcon lurched forward with a burst of speed and shot directly for the enemy's nest.

For the first few minutes, they seemed to be doing fine until the huge battle cruiser filled the entire viewport and opened fire. Han was quick on his reflexes to avoid the first few volleys, but he wasn't nearly quick enough to avoid all of them completely. One lucky shot broke through and impacted directly with the top hull.

Chaos erupted within the cockpit as several systems momentarily shutdown before coming back online displaying various warning messages. Alarms screamed for attention, blaring in tandem with the blinking of the lights as the freighter spiraled out of control towards the planet below.

But out of all the warning messages displayed on the console, only one managed to really hold Han's attention long enough for him to react. "We're leaking atmosphere..." he muttered more to himself than Leia. "Godsdammit, they cut us wide open!"

Without even thinking, Han started to rise, staggering against the rocking motion of the ship in an attempt to leave the cockpit. "Take the controls!" he shouted to his wife, his arm reaching out wildly for a handhold as he started to pitch forward against the ship's momentum. "Get us out of this damned freefall, will ya?! I need to check on the kid and isolate that leak so we can get back to the surface." He paused for a moment, twisting his face into a grimace. "Hopefully it ain't too bad."

With a pained growl, he somehow managed to manually crack open the cockpit door, which hissed with the change of pressure due to the exposed atmosphere. He hung there a moment to regain his balance before plowing forward into the access corridor. He instantly found it harder to breathe as the air rushed past him in a crazy fury, escaping through the hole the turboblast managed to procure in the hull. He still wasn't close enough to assess the damage, but as far as he could tell, it appeared to be a small hole - something that could be easily blocked off to secure a safe landing back on the surface.

Even then, he hoped the kid hadn't been in the top turret. That area had taken a direct hit and if he had been anywhere in that vicinity...well, there wouldn't be much left.

Grabbing a breath mask off of the maintenance rack, Han trudged forward, rounding the corner that would bring him to the turret access point.

It had all happened so fast...

Kalin pulled himself off the ground, realizing the ship had been hit pretty hard. Maybe it was his body's need for oxygen that pulled him out of his coma, or it was the hand extended by the spirit Lumiya. It didn't matter, he grabbed it and wobbled as he met an erect state. "Frak me," It only took one glance at the emergency computer screen to realize they were bleeding atmosphere, but it was also much more obvious than that. He grabbed an oxygen mask and pulled it over his head.

"Kalin, the other turret has been destroyed. You picked the right one." The lean body of Shira breathed against his neck, causing hairs to prickle. "Time is precious, and judging by the wreckage of the ship, you can still repair it to make a landing. You must save the Corellian, Kalin, otherwise we lose everything. He is the key!"

Kalin fumbled to the turret chair, perhaps still in a trance, one that needed to defend the ship from the horde of TIE fighters. The power display screen flickered, and nothing happened when he pulled the trigger. They couldn't fight their way out of this one. Soon Solo emerged, he looked like hell, but judging by his reaction, Kalin didn't look so good either. Just then, Leia must've turned up a received transmission. “This is the freighter Star Raptor to any friendly ships in the area, we’re under attack and heading groundside. Anybody still alive out there?”

It could be a ploy, a way to call up what ships were really dead, and determine which others were faking it. The tactic wouldn't work, the Imperials would blast the wreckage eventually, just to be sure. Kalin looked at Han, "Our only option is to fix the breach and try to land this thing." It was obvious, yes, but it mattered more to him to say it out loud, than any kind of clarification. "Just tell me what I have to do. I know a lot about the design of the ship." This ship. Han's ship.

Han winced as the damage became very clear. The blast had really hit home and the entire back quarter of the freighter was in tatters. Even if he had all of SE's best crews by his side, it would still take months of grueling work to repair her to the state she had been in prior to the attack. It didn't help that there was a gaping meter wide hole in the hull, hissing with an angry fury against the vacuum as it sucked the very life from the interior of the ship.

Still, Han mused, it could have been worse. For one, the hole could have been a hell of a lot bigger, triggering an instant death at the mercy of open space. Instead, he was left with a manageable hole, still dangerous if left alone, but easy enough to patch. All he had to do was lock down the hold and seal off the cockpit. It wouldn't be much, but it would provide them with enough time and enough recycled air to get out of this scrape and return dirt side to make repairs.

And then there was the kid. Either he had great insight or extremely good luck, but somehow he had managed to pick the gun turret that hadn't been torn to shreds in the blast and survive. He looked a little worse for wear, but still in his right mind. He was just climbing out of the malfunctioning turret with a rebreather over his nose and mouth when Han reached the cross corridor.

"Our only option is to fix the breach and try to land this thing," he was saying, struggling to catch his breath.

Han ground his teeth together. He had already come to that grim conclusion on his own. He didn't need to hear it repeated by a fresh-faced kid. "Don't you think I know that?" he grumbled, his voice hazy and almost distant through the rebreather's mouthpiece. "I already have a plan. This isn't the first time someone punched a hole in the old girl. She'll survive."

Kalin nodded his head, no doubt trying to come to terms with what was happening around him. "Just tell me what I have to do. I know a lot about the design of the ship."

Instead of turning to continue down the ruptured corridor, something about what the kid had just said gave him pause and he just stood there and stared at the younger man uneasily. He knew it was probably just a figure of speech and yet another way to show off in front of the 'Republic hero', but something still didn't sit right with the kid knowing that much about the Falcon. He had a feeling it could lead to more trouble...

Tucking that to the back of his mind, Han finally nodded and waved his hand casually to allow Kalin to go first. "In that case, if you know so much about my ship, how 'bout you lead the way." He leaned forward, pointing to the whistling chasm leaking air. "It's right through there. We just need to seal this corridor and lockdown the cockpit and hope it holds long enough for us to land."

***

I have Cray's permission to move Leia here in order to progress the plot.

Meanwhile in the cockpit...

“This is the freighter Star Raptor to any friendly ships in the area, we’re under attack and heading groundside. Anybody still alive out there?”

The message repeated for the third time over the main comm channel, sounding louder and more desperate with each completed cycle.

It started to replay again when Leia finally made up her mind - with a simple flick of a switch, the distress signal was sent.

Hopefully it wasn't too late...for the Star Raptor or them...

Kalin knew he might've slipped by tipping the Corellian off about his knowledge of the Falcon, but they didn't have time for the old man to hold his hand through everything. He grabbed a few nearby tools, "I'll patch the breach, maybe you should help Mrs. Solo and get this thing ready to drop into the atmosphere." Kalin bent next to the holographic game table and used a laser-slicer to remove the top half. Using the best precision cuts he could manage under the time constraints, he mounted and welded it the wall. His skin was numb by the time he finished. As he made it to the edge of the corridor, his oxygen mask caught and ripped.

He breathed in what was left, before tossing it aside, and worked on sealing off the cockpit. The job wasn't perfect, makeshift at best, but it was all he could do. He pulled a fresh oxygen tank from one of the hidden compartments, not sure if Han may have seen him do so, as he entered the pilot's den. He sat directly behind Leia, and called to the Corellian with a worried face, "That's it, Captain Solo, if you're not a man of faith, now might be the time."

Even from the cockpit, Han could clearly hear the screeching of the hull buckling under the strain as they inched closer to the surface. With most systems offline, including the shields, there wasn't much protecting them from the high impact forces that were associated with re-entering a planet's atmosphere. It was literally tearing the ship apart. He was slowly coming to accept the fact that either way, they were going to die. It was now a choice of whether he preferred to have his blood boil due to exposure to open space or having his entire body crushed by the intense forces of a planet's gravity well. Really, there was no preference. No matter how you looked at it, both would be extremely painful until that final, satisfying instant where your life slipped away and granted you peace...

"Captain Solo, this is Lucas, uh, Pallanen..." a voice broke over the comm with urgency. "I believe you know my mother..and my father, Ryan Davad."

Han nearly choked at the announcement, not because they now had some ounce of hope, but because of certain business repercussions it could cause. He guiltily turned to Leia, half-expecting her to already know about his decision to stay on as CEO. "You don't think this is payback for what I did to him, do you?" he blurted out before he could fully think the situation through.

"Right, Captain, we've got a jammer around us, and the Star Raptor. Only problem is, well, its not meant to handle this amount of mass. We're going to lose it any second, and become three fresh energy dots on Imperial radars. I suggest you do what you need to do and do it fast. We've sent an energy cable, which we can use to squeeze some extra power into the Falcon, or we can tow. Do you read me? Over."

"Or maybe not," he finished hastily, now feeling like a fool for potentially blowing it like that. He quickly ran a hand across his brow to clear the perspiration and diverted his gaze away from Leia. "Forget I said that. At least now we have a way out."

Clearing his throat, he turned his attention fully to the comm. "We read you, kid. Unfortunately, we're sitting dead ducks. All our systems are offline and the only thing keeping us moving is the natural pull of the planet. If you could give us a proper lift, I'd owe you one."

Han didn't have to say anymore. As soon as the words had left his lips, their forward acceleration had increased. They were no longer free-falling in space, but rather, being tugged along by a tow cable to the planet's surface. Han knew from past experience that it was a tricky maneuver and whoever was piloting the other vessel must have the utmost concentration and damn fine skills. He made a mental note to thank him personally once they managed to reach the planet safely.

If they reached the planet safely...

There was still the issue with the shields and the crushing forces of the planet's gravity. Hopefully whatever protective bubble Davad's ship was carrying, it was enough to protect both vessels from re-entry. Han could only watch with bated breath as they drew closer, the view outside the viewport now turning red with the superheated gas of the atmosphere.

The stars streamed past her, like the tears from her eyes. Everything was a blur in front of her, like everything was a blur in her mind. She didn't know what was happening, and she was so lost that she didn't know how lost she was. The involuntary actions that had guided her to engage the Falcon's engines were operating on a level far beneath the cloudy confusion raging in her brain. It was like she had a blow to the head, crunching her memories together and leaving behind only the feeling of impact.

The dull churn of the hyperdrive, the hum that had coursed through her body so many times before, felt so empty, so inexplicably empty. She couldn't bring herself to look at the pilot's chair next to her. She had been there, jumping the ship to lightspeed as she blasted away from Bakura as the Empire retreated, but she had just as quickly jumped back into the copilot's chair. She had sat there so many times, keeping Han's place while he worked in the back, but she couldn't sit there now... she couldn't look there now...

It was her fault. She had been the one always dissuading Han from his instincts. She always had. The kid was just trying to impress him, she had said. What was wrong? In years past, her advice had saved them. Now it had... killed him. Killed them.

What was this sick galaxy?

What was this sick Force?

She didn't even embrace it. She didn't even confront it; she just turned away as it cloyingly tried to get inside. She knew she could pour her wailing sorrow into the Force's infinite capacity for anguish, she knew that it wanted to whisper some kind of gilded lies to her, but she didn't want to touch it. She pushed it away. She couldn't touch something so depraved, something so corrupted that it had the audacity to offer her comfort while moments ago it had taken Han from her. She hated the Force, and she hated that she was cursed enough to be bound to it for life.

She found her fingers massaging the ring around her finger.

Bound for life.

She finally heard the wail to erupt from her lungs, her eyes so blurry wet that she couldn't distinguish hyperspace from realspace. She didn't know how long she had been moaning, but it didn't matter. She slammed her fists down, the pain not even entering her body, cursing the damn ship. She remembered the first moments she'd spent on it, running into its hold as they blasted away from that damn space station. Nothing but trouble. How much easier would it have been if Han had never come for her?

Bound for life.

What did it even mean? Fate didn't even have the decency to allow her to fulfill that vow. For whose life? Not Han's; she should rightfully have followed him, wherever he went. She hated Han. He had left her, letting her crumble into nothing more than an old widow wasting away in the cockpit of a junker as she cried all the water from her body. She slammed the dash again.

The brief moment passed, the hatred collapsing back into the tempestuous ooze of thoughts, but she sobbed even louder. She hated herself more than Han. How could she ever hate him or blame him? She should hate herself. She should have been by his side. How could she have stayed behind, alive while he wasn't? How could she have ignored Han's feelings? She didn't blame the boy. She didn't even blame the Empire, or bloody Zend. It was her. All her.

Bound for life?

She'd broken those bonds, she knew. Not Han. Not Lohden. Not the blast. Not the Empire. Not even the Force. It was her.

Broken for life.

Now en route to Coruscant
