Some of you may have noticed our latest spambot attack. If not, then yay, but you may have. A few threads in off-topic, assessment, announcements, suggestions... and then a goddamned legion of Polish-language ad threads in applications. Our beloved friend has been dealt with, however, I'm starting to think stronger measures are necessary.

Perhaps, when you make an account, you need to PM CMAC your application there, first. If the account has no PM within 24 hours (so, you know, make the account when you have a few minutes), it's summarily deleted on suspicion of being a spambot. What do you guys think? This is nothing official, just my attempt to turn rants, raves, and rage into something constructive. :p

I saw the attack, but my internet crashed before I could get a mod's attention (Damn HughesNet). And I must say, it's not the largest I've seen, at least here. Seriously, twenty cumshots in every single thread in a 2000 topic forum I was moderating. I have hereby dubbed it the BumBucket event. He didn't even deserve a warning for that, I spanked that ass down, IP, User and e-mail ban. Not to mention the deletion of all his posts. And then all I did was e-mail the admin that there was an incursion, he could check the edit history, and called it a day. CARN SMASH.

Anyways, I'm not sure on the new security measures. Since it seems all we have are people who know their way around, maybe we could turn the site into invite only? Work through a friend to get an account made? Dunno if that'd work, just another suggestion. I do however don't think we need more security, just maybe another mod in more timezones to keep an eye on the place. Since no one is up at around 5 in the morning, except, well, Alex while he's in Italy. But he's not permenantly there, so that'd only be a temperary advantage.

Nothing in the way of CMAC of course, but with mod powers to deal with troublesome users. (*Cough* I've had two years of experience *Un-cough* )

He means that in order for your app to get through, you post it like usual, but you then need to PM Moff/Han to notify that you were the one that posted it, and not a spambot.

Post app + PM Moff His Highness the Emperor = App can go through approval process.

I love the title of this thread. haha good work Ams

I saw it as well. I was thinking permissions could be adjusted so new accounts could only post in applications.

That way if they apply, then their account can be turned on to post in the other Non-RPG forums, and when their application is approved, they get full access to the RPG forum posting.

It's already set up like that. Though currently it's all the non-canon/non-play zones.

Well instead of new accounts being able to post in:

Announcements
Questions and Suggestions
Applications
The Cantina
Assessment Room

They will only be allowed to post in: Applications

Once the app is up, the first admin that sees it gives them permission to post in the others mentioned above.

Once the app is accepted, they get access to RPG forums.

They could also PM an administrator for access, lol, that could work too, but then we get players that are already here, that just want to throw up the application for their new character and not have to go through the admins everytime.

IDK, whatever is best for the people cleaning up the mess. I just figure limit it to one forum, that way the mess is contained even further.

Sort of. You make the account and PM a rough outline (I should've been more clear) so we know the account is for playing, not posting Russian viagra knockoffs or child porn. If the account is made within, say... 24 hours with no rough PM, it's deleted. On the spot.

Plus, it prevents people from spending six hours writing up an app that CMAC ends up having severe reservations about approving. So, two birds with one stone. ;)

...That he did. But they're technical uses, so no flogging with a trout... but let's not make a habit of it, eh? :p

We have something similar, which spared the RPG forums from a stream of spam. It might be possible to lock it down further, but that also means newbies can't ask questions outside of the apps. Plus, the worst spam was in Apps. :p

Well, that's basically what I'm suggesting, plus allowing mods to look over a rough, little two-minute outline for an app before you guys write your novella bios. :p

My initial thought is to say no.

We are a small forum and besides inviting friends over, we're not growing either. Locking down even more forums or forcing potential players to go through even more security measures is not the answer. If anything, they will take one look at that and say, "Meh...I'm not going through all of that just to join a forum so I can play happy fun time games." They will move on and find another forum.

To me, that's not worth it just so we can keep out the occasional spambot that comes along maybe once or twice a month. Besides that, what would be the point if we take care of them in a timely manner to begin with?

My initial thought is to say... Shy left something at Jaina's house. <_<

:p

But, we're talking it over... you have good points. An extra layer of bureaucracy, in the long run, usually causes more issues than it solves.

There's no need for such a system. phpBB already has an email confirmation system that should crack down on these "spambots". I'm hesitant to enable it, though. We don't really have bad spam issues here, and any serious, one-time attacks (like we've had so far) are easily removable (especially if I do it).

However, I doubt these were spambots. More than likely they were actually people. Our CAPTCHA sucks enough that we humans can barely get past it. So, you can't really do a whole lot.

You should know by now I have my own peculiar computer jargon. :p

Ah well. It was just a thought. And welcome back, guys. ;)
